Once again, Don has been busy putting his checkbook where his mouth is...supporting those candidates and causes in which he fully believes (or those that can help him out with one of his projects). Thanks to one of our Legal Eagles, FaithTex, we've managed to. come up with a few of Henley's favorite candidates. Remember, the limit on personal contributions for tederal candidates is $1,000. $$ Daryi Susher, a 42 year old wiriter and candidate for Austin, TX city council (Don has environmental interests in the city's Barton Springs) received $500 from Henley. 8$ Dan Wiliams, running for a Representative slot from Idaho, received $1,000 from Henley and $1,000 from Henleys polticaly conscious wife, Sharon. $$ Henley was also a supporter of John Bryant's failed bid to win the Democratic primary for Texan Senator. Cinderella siory candidate (and teacher) Victor Morales beat out traditional poltician Bryant. (Morales has our vote!). $$ The Austin American Statesman also reported thai Henley gave both financial and verbal supporto City council Member Brigid Shea in her election efforts. $$ Anti-O.J Henley has also given financial support to Los Angeles DA Gil Garcett. $$ Henley supported Steve Ford to the tune of $1,000 in his bid ‘or US Representative from Massachusetts. $$ Perhaps one of his biggest contributions went to Lon Burnam, an anti-authoritarian, tie hating, Quaker candidate for the Texas Assembly. Henley gave his campaign $10,000. Burnam won his primary and will be unopposed in November. Ummm...Don? Lisa is running for English Department Chairperson. That's right...your weren't seeing (or hearing) things when you tuned in to Duckman a few weeks ago. Joe Walsh was guest starring (in cartoon form). He played himself, which shouldn't have been too difficult. In the episode, the main duck character wants to be in the movie being shot at the local hospital. It tums out that the movie is nothing more than a public service/ educational film on MRIs. Joe tries to dispel angst about having one of the medical procedures, It was great seeing Joe on TV again. This got us to thinking... what about the Jother band members guesting on a few TV series. Glenn could show up on Nash | Bridges...heck, he could even play Cody McMahon. Timothy would be great as Phoebe’s dad on Friends. Don Felder could be perfect marriage material for Fran on The Nanny and who wouldn't like to see Henley as a buckskin clad, wire glasses wearing, country lawyer on Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman? Hmmmmm... Legneds of Baseball Game American League 10—National League 8 Mark Harmon MYP Best Quote: “While Joe Walsh may have had a lot of nits in his career he had nothing resembling one this evening’ Top of the Sth inning..Joe Walsh, the American League manager, puts himself inio the game and is up at bat, There are 2 outs and a man on rd (Carlton Fisk). First pitch, Joe fakes a big swing and is a mss. Then showing that his eyesight is not as bad as everyone believes, he shows good judgment and the count is 2 and 1. Fisk is cheering him on from 3rd and Joe makes contact with the ball But its a foul, strike two! And then...the windup..the pitch...called 3rd strike Third out Well, he's a man of his word, he did what he wanted to do, he struck out. (In the pregame interview Joe had said that he just wanted to be in the game, get up to bat and strike out.) But Joe stays in the game, top of the 5th and he's playing second base, First up, Mark Harmon...i’s a sharp line drive to second...Bert Campaneris colides with Joe but managed to tum the double play. Next Is Meagen Davis...nigh bidder in the aucton to play in the game....she hits 4 short fly to second...Joe makes a caich for the third ut! Joe has two more opportunities as a fielder but no more at bats. The first ball is a pop ily which in the words of the broadsaster..”Joe Walsh obviously didn’t want anything to do with that ball, he didn't get anywhere nearit. Al Bumbry tred to come in from the outfield to make the catch but couldn't get there in time.” Next chance was a sharply hit ball to second, Joe tried to go for the double play but drops the ball He does recover in time to make at least the one out Sporting almost identical jackets, Joe opens the World Series with the National Anthem and Glenn kicks off the Superbow! with that favorite of patriotic Americans everywhere “The Heat is On”, Hey! [What would an Eagles’ salute to [sports be without a picture of Genin hitting the links (quite @ Ichange from the links hitting him!) q V The Eagles Land on RS Don Henley and Glenn Frey Rolling Stone June 15, 1978 The Eagles...have this performance problem. They strike no rock and roll stage poses, flaunt no athletic grace--i anything, they lotter. -Peler Herbst, Rolling Stone, May 5, 1977 never liked the Eagies very much, and Joe Walsh, their new Jead guitarist, appeais even less. Dave Marsh, Rolling Stone Catie DIVINE RETRIBUTION: Eaglos--18 Roling Stono--8 It was about two years ago that we began to gat the distinct impression the the Roling Stone music cities didn't like us very much. In fact, it seemed that they didnt ike anyone in our particular "genre," or anyone who made music in LA, for that matter. You know, all you laid-back, mellow, hightlying, West Coast, cowboy Angst-meister types. It seems that we were all victims of some kind of petty cultural war between LA and New York, (Youall must be aware that rock and rolls just an attitude; singing and playing well don't really matter.) Actually, some of the Rolling Stone critics used to like us, but then we became successful, you know, and after that, of course, it became totally impossible for any of them to accept Us because we all know that success is inherently evil and we must be protected from it at all costs. In the ond, as all good cowboy types do, we decided to settle this thing "outside." Atter weeks of trading ‘libelous’ if somewhat trite remarks in Random Notes (‘The Eagles seem....iterested in finding a softball team they can beat,” said Charles M. Young), it was decided that the Eagies and Roling Stone would duke it out in a USSPSA (United States Slow Pitch Softball Association) professional soitball match. The bloody battle, itwas decided, would be held at Dedeaux Field on the USC campus.’Real men play in the snow in Central Park,” sniveled RS team captain Charles MM. Young, obviously horniied at possible ‘exposure to actual sunshine. AS game day approached, the tweets in Random Notes grew more ridiculous (boring?) Eagles manager Irv Azoff (a.k.a. Industry Upstart) and Rolling Sione's "boy publisher," Jann Wenner, ergaged in hours of long-distance shouting matches. Glenn Freys already tenuous relationship with Charles M. Young was rapidly approaching switch-blade and tire-tool proportions. Sill negotiations continued, and it was decided that Sunday, May 7th, would ba game day. The Eagles and RS agreed that in order to make dhings even moe interesting, the loser would donate $5000 to the UNICEF World Nutrition Program. Azoff and Wenner thought that this would possibly overshadow the fact that this was to bo one of the mo deadly eamest grudge matches of all time--but the Players were out for biood. On a sunny Saturday aftemoon the day before the game, the Eagles were having their final workout at Deveaux Field lumped in a row of seals high up in the bleachers were the RS scouts, Wenner, Dunning,” Crowe, etc. They were not smiling. Stil, all seemed to be going will until Eagles pitcher Don Henley waked in carrying a pair of steel spikes. Wenner sat bolt upright in his chair, He peered downward at the field. The it occurred to him that Glenn Frey was also wearing metal spikes. Then he noticed that most of the Eagles team were wearing metal-spked baseball shoes. Something told him that one of these psychos would not be the least bit adverse to putting a swit end to Charlie Young's capacity for procreation, not to mention his typing hand. Suddenly, this mellow, courtry-rook band from LA had an aura about it not unlike the Philadelphia Flyers\Wenner rushed down the stadium stairs to confront Azofl.. "Rubbor cleats or wo'rs not playing," he shoutod."But, Jann,’ Azoit replied, ‘these are reguiation shoes."'Somaone might get hur,” Wenner said." How exciting,” Azof replied. "Do your writers ever think about that?*Alter more bickering the Eagles conceded and decided that the hanging would take place in peace cleats. (The next day it was noted that, “just in case,’ Wenner had sent our that evening and outfitted his team with Stee! spikes, which were kept in the dugout on siandby), It was also agreed that Joe Smith, former voice of the Boston Cettics, chairman of the board of Elektra/Asylum, now part-time mediocre actor, would be emcee. The day of the game arrived-- one of those typically mellow, laid-back, warm, sunny, soft-rook California altemoons, except today there was tension in the air. Both teams took their share of verbal abuse from sportscaster Smith, who seemed to hate everytody equally. The Eagles’ bleachers were filed to capacity with the likes of Joni Mitchel, Botsy Asher, Mary Kay Place, Karla Bonoff, Donald Fagen, Chevy Chase, Marcia Strassman, eic., while the RS bleachers ‘were telatively empty except for Daryl Hall and a collection of cute, young cheerleaders from Hollywood High, yet another tragically hip move by RS (whoever heard of cheerleaders at a baseball game?)As the strains of our national anthem, “Life in the Fest Lane” faded, one could indeed feel that there was fear as well as loathing. Every player was scared. For perhaps the first time, some of the RS wrters knew what it felt like 10 be called upon to “perform” in front of thousands of eyes, Conspicuously absent were Stephen Holden, Paul Nelson, and Greil Marous. "They never could face the music," noted Frey. Then over the PA system came the ordar fo "Play ball!” First up to bat for RS wes team captein Charles M. Young, who was fearing a suspicious looking bendage on his right arm. It was the consensus amorg the Eagles that he contracted tendinitis rom staying up all night practicing advanced methods of haracter assassinations and generaly cutting total strangers to he ribbons with his fountain pen. Soma even speculated that e had been wounded in an aborted attempt to kidnap Glenn Frey's cat, Charlie, the night before the game. Never try to idnap a cat who has the same name as you.Charles N. ‘oung's performance at the plate was an omen. He popped to he Eagles second baseman Terry Bassett. Even Jim Dunning, Rolling Stone's best player, who was once drefted by the PBatmere Orioles, had the jters and grounded out to second ase. Then Rolling Stone third baseman, Eric Baron, drew a lk, and Henley got RS first baseman Claeys Bahrenourg on a ly Dall 0 left fieX.AS the Eagles came to bat in the bottom of the irst, their new kid was nervous. Timothy B. Schmit, the Latino ith the German last name and samurai headbanc, was so nervous, in faci, that he drilled a line shot that nearly took off [Etic Baron's glove at third base. This too was an omen. We ould hit the ball hard all day long. At the end of the fist, the core was 3-0, but RS did not lie down. After a quiet second inning they came back to tie the score 3-3 in the top of the third le realized that we had to tighten up our defense and keeps coring runs, We scored three in the bottom of the third, three in the fourth, but didn't score in the fifth. Frey paced. “A 9-3 jead is not enough," he declared. "We've got to keep scoring uns. No more quiet innings.” The Eagles responded in their lf of the sixth by sending ten men to the plate to bombard josing pitcher Tim "You guys were just lucky’ Reitz with conservative singles by Felder, Walsh and Henley folowed by consecutive doubles by Schmit, Frey and Peter Cetera, bass fats for Chicago, resulting in six runs, all produced by wsicians. The score wes now 15-3. Choice...Options...Possibilities... A Grassroots Aspen Experience by Debby Rogers Its called A Grassroots Aspen Exetience-you might have noticed it on an Eagles ticket--and anyone who's been te an Eagle concert has seen the name and adirese pop op on the big screens as the band leaves the stage for a short intermission, But what is i? A Grassroots Aspen Experience (AGAE) is @ piogram for and about kids. i's anendeavor Glenn Frey holds in the highest esieem. He feais it's immensely worthunile and be knows It works. He's been an avid supporter from day one says AGAE's executive director Jchn Rei. [A Grassroots Aspen Experience is John Reid's baby. He's passionate about heing kids. ‘I believe that the American Dream is available to everyone in America, he says, So five times a year he brings @ total of about 300 economically disadvantaged kids between the ayes of 10 and 17 to Aspen, Colorado. He and his staff fand counselors give them the chance to dream about life's possibiliies instoad of accepting the limitations of their inner city realities. For many of these kids i's their first time out oj the inner city-their first time away from nome, their fst ime to fy, and thelr frst ime in & tong tire to tus "We radicaly alter these kids lives, they learn to know what it's like to be ina foam work almosphare; what ifs ike to conquer challenges. Most af these kids have never left their ghetto environment. when they get here they besin to open up to the possibilities," says Reid At its core AGAE is an outward boundtype program. The summer program is ten daye of living in tho ruggedness of the mountains around Aspen. The kids and their counselors live in teepees and are challenged into realizing what they are capable of doing-they find the strength and determination inside themselves to traverse a ropes course, reppal down a 120 foot cliff and ratt down @ river. In the winter they look down one of Aspen’s famous sii runs and eam they can make it to the bottom in ne piece. Tho programs aro decigned to bo tough so that the confidence success brings by completing them is real and deserved. ‘The second part of the program is breaking down the mental atttudes that life has built up in these kids. It happens in the rap sessions and these no-holds barred gve and takes havea tendency of stripping aviay all the BS. Kids can't foo! other kids--the rap sessions are a time of brutal honesty bringing out extreme vulverabiliias. Here's an excerpt from the Denver Post Magazine of August 1985 of what can happen. “In a packed Snowmass lodge conference room, 16-year-old Jonathan tcok @ deep breath, faced 106 of his peer and stepped off the proverbial cliff “Yeah, well | been selling rack since Iwas 12, and Id lke to stop," he said, his body hunched over a microphone and his face tumed toward the floor. "Problem is, its hard to stop. Ilike the money, the things it buys me, the way itlets me show qoft It Jonathan, trom New Orleans had hoped his confession would elicit sympathy, he was in for a surpiice. The room in the lavish lodge was so silent after Jonathan's confession that the click of an alr conditioner Keking in sounded like a whip cracking, Derek Canty, the 31-year-old leader of this rap session, walked up the aisle to where Jonathan sat Takied on his stool "You are destroying people's lives just to make money" Canty said in a low voice J AGAE‘s Exocturva Dirsetr, Jann Reid, cares passionately about kits. “Ive heard this before. The dealers mentally Is, We ain't responsible for what people do. They want it, the ean come gat iv "But the bottom line is you are killing people, Jonathan, probably your oxn blood. You are killing your own family." Jonathan wiped away a tear wih the back of his hand, "'m ashamed” he said, his voice barely audible. People OD on that shit" In the audience, 17-year-old Rata! rose to hs feet. “I hate people like you,” fe said, his voice quavering as he stared at Glenn Frey....no! born with a silver pick in his fingers. Jonathan, "Its because of people lke you that my mother is high on crack all the tie.” Jonathan molted into his stool. Canty, easily 6-feot-2 and 220 pounds, stood over him. “Stand up." he said and Jonathan obeyed. "Now | want anyone in here who's got a family member hooked on crugs to stand up,” Canty said. A few kids stood immediately, Then, siowly, as they saw it was sate, others siood, until about 40 were con their feet, Canty tock Jonathan by the elbow and lod him to tho odgo of the audionco. "| want you to spand a few minutes looking into each person's eyes and thinking about what you have dene to their families and their lives, and to the future generations,” he said. You may be from Louisiana and they may be from Washington or Denver or New York or Los Angeles, but thal doesn't really make any difference, doce it?" Jonathan raised his head and met the eyes of each of those 40 youths. His ayes were brimming wih tear, but the tears did not spill over and his gaze held steady. So, where does a guy who's eared the adoration of millions of fans worldwide over a career thats spanned two decades tit in with all tis? How can rock legend ang actor Glenn Fiey relate to a bunch of kids from the poor streets of the U-S, Well remember, Glonn waen't bom with a cilvar pick in his fingers. “One of the direct messages Glenn aivas to these kids is he got where he is from hard work. His Dad worked in a Detroit auto plant. His parents scraped and saved forhis piano lessons. He tells them he made it winere ne Is tocay through hard work ang discipine, nothing was just given to him,” says Reid. “He tells the kids that same phiosaphy of setting a gosl and working hard to get it applies to them too Reid believes i's really appropriate for the Eagies to support this organization because none of them were torn into wealth or fame, they all worked hard to earn what they have. Reid says the band is a great ‘example to the kds of what can happen to anyone whe sets their mind to achieving a goal and are willing to make sacrifices to get it AGAE's Program Coordinator Patricia Noble left a job in Dallas to beccme a part ofthis program because she believes 0 much in what it doss, Sie says Glenn and his wite Cindy dove right in trom the Deginning and got involved. Both of them are on the Grassroots Board of Directors and have been gioup leaders and partiopated in tho Summer and Winter programs. Their participation over the past sixyears has been a combination of hands on and mics-cn* raising money and promoting the non-profit organization Belore the Eagles’ resumption Glenn did shows for AGAE including the one in Feoruary of 1994 that included Don Henley and Joe Walsh. It was feral during that time in Aspen that Glenn and Don ané, a day leter, Joo made the commiment to got the Eaglas back together Sinca the Eagles have been up and running Glenn and Cindy havent teen eble to be as "hands on’ because they've been living mostly in Los Angeles, but Noble says they sil oep in close touch with the AGAE office and what's going on, they're updated constantly, Noble says Cindy is a great ‘mentor and they call her for advice because they respect her opinion ‘Evon Glonn’s porconal assistant gets involved. Cheryl Doherty-Decter has worked for Glenn for 6-and-arhalf years and she's shared a teepee with Cindy and AGAE kids duning a summer program and helped ‘out on a winter progiam too. "Mhese are a wonderul, honest, genuine bunch of people who want to guide these children." She says Glenn and Cindy raaily boliove in what John does and they feel good about supporting it. Doherty-Decter says that sinze Glenn and Cindy have been back in Calfomia theyve been touching base with the LA kids whove gone through the program. So it must be pretty amazing to a kk to know you can pick up the phone and call Glenn Frey and just talk about life, right? Well, remember, these kids didn't grow up listening to the Eagles. Boliove it or not most really don't know who Glenn Fray, founder of the Eagles, is. To them he's a “grown up" whe’s eained their trust, not on what he's accomplished with his career, but on wno he is....a human being, The way that trust is earned is part of what makes AGAE such a strong program, The kids DON'T just come to ‘Aspen and get a taste of whet life could be only to be plopped back down in thir innor cttias eight days later with a "nice to have metcha, have a nice life." No way. Every kid that participated in the program has an adult mentor who's committed to keaping in touch with "his or her" kid at least once a month for the next two years. In other words, when the AGAE kids go home its with the hope someone out there really cares, and at least ‘once a month, whether * by phono, letter or in person, they get tangible proof that someone really does, In adgition to the adult mentors Reid is constantly in touch with, each of "his kids" and AGAE, he works closely with youth agencies in every communtty. Plus ‘there are alumni groups in every town so the kids know they have someone they can turn to, The message that Reid is passionate about, choice, options, and possibilities is constantly reinforced ‘And that message is sinking in, This year there are 50 AGAE "alumns" going to college or a trade school. Now realize, that's 50 kids who probably never dreamed they would make it out of high school. Grassrools provides scholarships every year to the kids to help with tuition or books or whetever they need to be on the samo status quo as their peers, It's knowing that these kind of possibilities exist that give the kids the incentive to change their lives. Many of the kids who were in gangs before coming to Aspen get out after they get back home. Obviously that makes their parents very happy. Reid says a common line trom parents is "You brairweshed this kid, didn't you" No, they haven't brainwashed ‘anyone, they just show these kide that they old the key 10 their future in their omn hands, And Eagles fans are helping these kids to realize their potential Reld Is very grateful for tne role Glenn and his fans are playing in supporting AQAE. “I appreciate the Eagles’ fans so much for their support of the Eaglos and thie ‘organization, Thair two dollars is saving kids Tives and showing them a way to their future Eagles’ fans are helping to keep afloat a wonderful organization and in doing so you're making a powerful statement and making a difference.” If you would like to know more about A Grassroots Aspen Experience you ‘can get in touch with John Reid and his staff ‘at 970-925-6671 oF write A Grassioots ‘Aspen Exporionce PO Box 10394 Aspen, Debby Rogors ie a nows producer for WSYX Vin Columbus Ohio. This month, we thought we'd focus on Don Henley bootlegs. Yes, believe it lor not, there are a tew around The first unauthorized Henley concert we acquired was Don at the New York State Fair irom August 29, 1969. It also happened to be the first concert the bootlegger had ever taped, Jas we found out when we purchased it. As Don didh't use video screens during his shows, this one is basically of the whole lstage shot from the audience. The quality is pretty good, but Inot great. One major drawback is not really being able to see Don while he drummed the Eagles songs. Perhaps the best part of the concert is when the lights on the huge Ferris Wheel in the background come on. It ladds a rather festive note to the concert. The set list is Don's standard from the first leg of the EO! tour....no surprises here. Probably the most readily available Henley bootleg 1s the New Year's Eve show from Tokyo in 1989. It is professionally shot, though you Couldn't tell it from our copy. It's nice that the Japanese put the [song tiles on the screen as each song begins and you just have to love Don mumbling words of \Japanese at the audience and ithen saying, "That's how you say that, isn't it?” ‘The benefit circuit hasn't been ignored, We have just Don's part lof the Walden Woods benefit at Madison Square Garden on [October 22, 1991. Again, it's shot from the audience and the quality is rather poor. There's a lot audionce interference. Since it was a benefit, it's not Don's complete set, but rather a shortened version. It really something only a die-hard fan would want to see. Speaking of benefits, Don nas performed twice at Nell Young's annual benefit for the Bridge School, in 1986 and in 1991 The 6 benefit was an all acoustic affair and Don and friends (Tim, Danny Kortchmar, JD Souther, and Jai Winding) bravely struggle through a wretched acoustic Boys of Summer. As Don says at it's Iconclusion, “It's like standing up here in socks and a jock strap." |4D sings New Kid in Town and Don does a great cover of the Boaties Yos It Is (or "Red!" as he calls it). This is a classic and Don and JD are in rare form. The 91 show is Don with his regular touring band, fresh from Ithe WWP benefit in NY. Don's lset includes a cover of Joni Mitchell's River and his comments after the song make it plain that the holiday season is not @ Henley favorite. We highly recommend these two great performances. |The best (and it's not hard with the slim pickings out there) Don Henley concert on video is| Nassau Coliseum from April 7, 1990. That's all we know of for Henley| bootlegs. On the whole they're} not that bad and there are a few} real gems out there. boll Don Henley finally received some recognition in his home state for his tireless environmental work. The Moody Gardens of Galveston honored him with the prestigious Environmental Leaderehip Avard at a lincheon over the Mamorial Day weekend. Since it was only a six hour drive away and tickets were only $17.50, we decided to go. Besides, who could pass up an opportunity to watch Don eat? Don was scheduled to give a press conierence before the luncheon and the Moody people made the mistake of lettng all of us in to watch. Don walked out, took one look at the assembled crowd, said a few words fo the cameraman, and walked back into his "holding’ room. It was obvicus that he wasnt going to speak until al of us were out of the way. Whet a cowardll Anyway, everyone filed into tho dining room to find their ‘ables while a string quartet (or a trio-we weren't really interested in ther) serenaded us. Much to our great delight, our table was righ! in front of the head table, Great! Don finally appeared. (We later saw on CNN that he did indeed —meeesg_ give the press conference afler we were gone...that's, our Doni!) He looked great ina brownish-greenish suit, green te with poka-dots, and really funky shoes. Don took his place at ihe head tabie while many people scurried to the front to shake his hand or take a picture. We began eating our salads (which looked suspiciously like leaves from Walden) and conversed with the paople at our table. Holly, her mom and grandma were there as well as two WT subscribers from Ohio. They flew all the way to Texas just for this. She had everyon including Don, laughing at her charming story. Next a professor specializing in bats spoke. He regaled us with facts and slatistics about Texan bats. Even Don was impressed, Then an environmental journalistimovie maker (who bore @ stiking resemblance to Joe Walsh) introduced the honoree, Mr. Henley. Upon listing ll of Don's environmental projects he mused, To which Don replied, "He {At the conclusion of his speech we were shown the Wallen Woods Project video, narrated by everyone's favorite hunk, Michael O'Keefe. It was great to finally see it. Don didn't watch the video, though. He was too busy going over his notes. After the video, Mrs. Moody presented Don with the actual award, a pyramid shaped thing about the size of a Grammy. Don looked very nervous as he began his speech. He said the Video had told us all we ever wanted to know about the WWP so he was going to focus on Texas. He then launched into a description of Caddo Lake, mentioning how he caught his first fish there with some kind of pearl lure, Con expressed his coneem for the planet by ofting statstic ater statstic showing how in trouble we are. Then he brought it to @ more personal level by explaining how he had shared a butterfly with his daughter and how his mom collects stray dogs, which he believes is one of the things thet keeps her going in an ongoing battle with breast cancer.
