Reflective Essay
This class, English 1302, was a little harder than I expected. We had several assignments
for this class, which included major essays, SARs (Short Academic Responses), quizzes, and
discussions. We had three major essays worth 60% of my grade; the Review was worth 15%, the
Report was worth 20% and the Visual Rhetorical Analysis was worth 25%. The five SARs were
worth 15% of my grade. However, the lowest grade that I received was dropped. This made me
feel so much better about the class and more relaxed when writing them. I knew that, if I mess up
on one Short Academic Response, it will still be okay for my grade. My final portfolio grade is
15%. However, the two Quizzes and three Discussions were part of a professionalism grade,
which was the rest of my ten percent. Overall, this class taught me new skills, enhanced my
skills, and showed me which essays were easy and hard. Also, it will help me beyond English
1301.
The new skills I learned were all mainly in the Report Essay, but some I did learn in my
Analysis essay. I learned to not put my opinion in the Report essay, which was hard for someone
as opinionated as myself. The word count on the Report was harder than the other essays, but
then new ideas came and it became no problem at all. This class strengthened my awareness of
comma splices and my sentence fragmentation skills. Also, I want to say that it helped me to
organize my thoughts better.
The skills I still need to enhance most are my use of commas and the sentence fragments.
Sometimes, I put too many commas or simply not enough because I forget about them. After this
class, I will improve my developing skills by taking English Composition 1302 and by practicing
my use of writing. I do plan on enhancing my writing skills before my English 1302 class, which
I am taking as one of my summer II classes.

The essay that was the easiest for me was the Review because it was about a hospital that
I have my appointments at all the time. The Report was the most difficult because of all the
research that I had to acquire. Also, the word count and not inserting my opinions were difficult,
especially towards the beginning of the Report. The essay that taught me the most was also the
Report due to the research that I had to sort through. I was stumped multiple times on how to get
information, but I learned a lot of new techniques.
The skills that I learned in this class will help me for my hopeful writing career, and for
my English 1302 class that starts on July 13th. My desire for a writing career would be as a
fiction writer for teens and young adults. Also, I feel like it could help me with my college
classes by communicating ideas to other people.
I learned a lot in this English class, even though it was only five-weeks long. I learned
how to avoid comma splices, obtain research information in a more efficient manner, and avoid
sentence fragments. This was a great class that I thoroughly enjoyed, mostly because of all the
weird things and the laughs I had. I do still stand with the Report being the most difficult essay.
Yet, surprisingly, the Report was my favorite essay and the one that I feel that I learned from the
most.
