3543.Anditcametopass,thatasHewascomenighuntoJericho,acertainblindmansatbythe
waysidebegging.Andhearingthemultitudepassby,heaskedwhatitmeant.Andtheytoldhim,
thatJesusofNazarethpassethby.Andhecried,saying,Jesus,SonofDavid,havemercyonme.
Andtheywhichwentbeforerebukedhim,thatheshouldkeepsilentbuthecriedsomuchthemore,
SonofDavid,havemercyonme.AndJesusstood,andcommandedhimtobebroughtuntoHim:
andwhenHewascomenear,Heaskedhim,saying,WhatwiltthouthatIshalldountothee?And
hesaid,Lord,thatImayreceivemysight.AndJesussaiduntohim,Receivethysight:thyfaithhath
madetheewhole.Andimmediatelyhereceivedhissight,andfollowedHim,glorifyingGod:andall
thepeople,whentheysawit,gavepraiseuntoGod.

TheLordperformedthiswaysidemiracleoftheblindmansothatevenHispassagealongaroad
wouldyieldaprofitableteachingforHisdisciplesandforus:thatweshouldinallthings,atalltimes,
andineveryplacedowhatisbeneficialandneverbeidle.

TheblindmanbelievedthatJesuswastheawaitedMessiahhavingbeenraisedamongtheJews,it
iscertainthatheknewthattheChristwouldbeoftheseedofDavid.Thereforehecriesoutwitha
great voice, Son of David, have mercy on me. His words have mercy on me show that he
understood Jesus to be divine and not merely a man. Marvel at his staunch confession: although
rebuked by many, he did not keep silent, but cried out all the more, urged on by the fervent zeal
withinhim. Therefore Jesus summons him as one who is truly worthy to approach Him,andasks
him, What wilt thou that I shall do unto thee? He asks the question, not in ignorance of what the
blindmanwanted,butsothatitwouldnotappeartotheotherswhowerepresentthattheLordgave
somethingdifferentfromwhatthemanwanted.Otherwise,somemighthavesaidthattheLord,ina

vaingloriousshowofpower,healedthemansblindnesswhenthemanhadonlybeenbeggingfor

EnvymightwellhaveinspiredsometoslandertheLordwithsuchfoolishnessasthis.Thereforethe
Lordaskedtheblindmanwhathewanted,andwhenHeheardthathewantedhissight,Hegave
himhissight.SeetheabsenceofvainglorytheLordsays,"Thyfaithhathmadetheewhole.Foryou
havebelievedwithfaiththatIamtheSonofDavid,theChrist,Whoisnowrevealed,andyouhave
shownsuchzealthatyoudidnotkeepsilentevenwhenrebuked."
