WithmyCAT/XATresults,IhadmanagedtogetinterviewcallsfromsomedecentMBA
institutesbutcouldnotcrackinterviews.Idon'tknowwhyIkeptnumbwhenaskedabout
thetimespentinthelasttwoyearsaftergraduation.Ijustcouldnotansweritconvincingly
asIknewinbackofmymind,Ihaven'tutilizedthetwoyearsdoinganythingthatwould
soundattractivetothem.WhileIwasstruggling,thingsstartedlookingbetterinthe
beginningof2004.But2to3batchesofengineersfromsomanycollegeswerewaitingto

IwassweatingbythetimeIreachedthegates.Tomysurprise,thesecuritypersonatthe
gates,welcomedmeandofferedmeaglassofwater.Heaskedmetosettledownfirst.
Oncecomfortable,IhandedovermyCVtothem.Theysaid,thebestplacefortheCV
wouldbetheHRtrayandaladysecurityguardusheredmetotheDispatchroom,which
hadabluecoloredtraylabelledasHR.ThiswasMarch24,2004.Within10daysorso,I
hadanemailinvitingmeforoffcampusatKolkataonApril18.Iclearedthewrittenon
April18andhadmyinterviewscheduledthenextday.Forthefirsttimetheinterviewers
werenotconcernedhowIspentmylast2years.Theydirectlyaskedmefewpuzzleswhich
Iansweredconvincingly.OnMay4,IgotmyofferemailwithjoiningdateatJuly26,2004.
Since,thenIamhere.Officepolitics,badmanagers,deceptiveandschemingcoworkers,
unreasonableHRpolicies,mandatorycertifications,nopromotions...listofdemeritsis
endless.Youmightcallmeemotionalbutthehospitalityshownatthegates,noquestions
askedaboutthepastandnumerousothersubtlethingshavekeptmestaywiththis
organization.ThiscompanymademehavemyfirsteverflightthattoototheUS,whenI
hadonly20monthsofexperience.Nowafter11yearsandfewmonths,Istillcherishmy
firstandonlyjob,tilldate.Myfamilymembersareproudofme.Iworkinoneofthebest

andhasverysuccessfulalumnispreadthroughouttheglobe,butin2002itwasjusta5
yearsoldcollege.Igotintoelectricalengineeringandwassincereenoughtoscoreadecent
marksinmyBEbutnotgreatenoughtobeacoreElectricalEngineer.

parentsthatIwasplaced.Ibegantoponder,whyiseveryonesohappy,andmyclose
friendsbegantowonderwhyIwasunhappy.
Facebookwasfilledwithcommentsand#PlacedInTCS.SelfiestakeninKFCetc.as
symbolsofcelebrationwentrampanteverywhere.
Whywaseveryonehappy?Mostpeopleknewthisisthebesttheycangetfortheir
qualification.TheywerenotIITiansorNITians,oreventhegoodstatelevelcolleges.And
theypracticallydon'thaveanyjobskillsrequiredtodoevenalowleveljob.Thusa3lac+

Accenturearemeantforbackup.ITcompaniesgenerallycomeatthebeginningofthe
placementsession.Onceyouhaveabackupjob,youcanbechoosyaboutthenextone.So
whenIgotplacedatTCS,Iwasactuallyoverwhelmed.Iwasnotgraduatingwithout
gettingajob.Andcoupleofmonthslater,Igotmysecondoffer.Slowly,TCSwasall
forgotten.

Well,iwassodarnhappywhenigotjobatTCS.Igotplacedbycampus
placement.Actually,TCSwasonlygoodcompanythatvisitedmycollege(Itwasanaverage
college).
Reasonforhappiness:
1.ItwastheFirstjob(ihadnothingforreferencetocompareitwithotherjobs).
2.Myaspirationsarenotlow(notatall,iwasborntosucceed),butTCSgenerallyworksasa
backup.ipreparedforGATE,myfriendforCAT.Butunfortunately,webothendedupin
TCS,whichisagoodthingcozinmyopinioninTCS,onecanfindtimetoimprove
oneself,prepareforcompetition.NowmyfriendisatIIMandimadeittoIITbutidropped
itforsomething.
3.Salaryislow,itsdisappointingofcourse.Butihavemetsomereallytalentedand
wonderfulpeoplehere,Anditsexperienceisworthit(alotsofpeoplewoulddisagreeon
this).Alsoonegetsenoughtimetochasetheirdreamswhileworkinghere.

isaverylittlechanceofacorecompanyvisiting.Evenifacoreorproductbasedcompany
visits,mostofthestudentsaretechnicallyincompetenttocleartheirinterviews.
IalsocomefromTier3collegeandwehadonlynocorecompanyvisitingourcollege.You
hearallkindsamazingplacementstoriesfromyourpeerswhoarestudyinginother
collegesandyoufeelworthlessaboutyourself.
