andWTCcrumblingwouldcrumbleallthatweweredreamingof.Seniorswhohadjobs

whatfuturehadinplaceforus,weallleft,eitherpreparingforCAT/GATEordojobsin

WithmyCAT/XATresults,IhadmanagedtogetinterviewcallsfromsomedecentMBA
institutesbutcouldnotcrackinterviews.Idon'tknowwhyIkeptnumbwhenaskedabout
thetimespentinthelasttwoyearsaftergraduation.Ijustcouldnotansweritconvincingly
asIknewinbackofmymind,Ihaven'tutilizedthetwoyearsdoinganythingthatwould
soundattractivetothem.WhileIwasstruggling,thingsstartedlookingbetterinthe
beginningof2004.But2to3batchesofengineersfromsomanycollegeswerewaitingto
beplaced.Competitionwastough.Offcampusrecruitmentdrivewassomethingthat
companieslikeKanbay/Satyam/Syntel/Infosyswereconductingtohandpicktrainees.

gates,welcomedmeandofferedmeaglassofwater.Heaskedmetosettledownfirst.
Oncecomfortable,IhandedovermyCVtothem.Theysaid,thebestplacefortheCV
wouldbetheHRtrayandaladysecurityguardusheredmetotheDispatchroom,which
hadabluecoloredtraylabelledasHR.ThiswasMarch24,2004.Within10daysorso,I
hadanemailinvitingmeforoffcampusatKolkataonApril18.Iclearedthewrittenon
April18andhadmyinterviewscheduledthenextday.Forthefirsttimetheinterviewers
werenotconcernedhowIspentmylast2years.Theydirectlyaskedmefewpuzzleswhich
Iansweredconvincingly.OnMay4,IgotmyofferemailwithjoiningdateatJuly26,2004.

Since,thenIamhere.Officepolitics,badmanagers,deceptiveandschemingcoworkers,
unreasonableHRpolicies,mandatorycertifications,nopromotions...listofdemeritsis
endless.Youmightcallmeemotionalbutthehospitalityshownatthegates,noquestions
askedaboutthepastandnumerousothersubtlethingshavekeptmestaywiththis
organization.ThiscompanymademehavemyfirsteverflightthattoototheUS,whenI
hadonly20monthsofexperience.Nowafter11yearsandfewmonths,Istillcherishmy
firstandonlyjob,tilldate.Myfamilymembersareproudofme.Iworkinoneofthebest
campuses.Iinvitedthesecuritypeopletomymarriageandtheygladlyaccepted.Iwillput
downmypapersonlyifIchangemyprofession.IwouldalsoliketodoafulltimeMBA(as

andhasverysuccessfulalumnispreadthroughouttheglobe,butin2002itwasjusta5
yearsoldcollege.Igotintoelectricalengineeringandwassincereenoughtoscoreadecent
marksinmyBEbutnotgreatenoughtobeacoreElectricalEngineer.

C.Sciencestudents.Codinghadbecomeaaddictionduringthattime.

just1.5yearsinthecompany.ImustsayIwasluckythere.Thenthenext56yearsinthe
UShavebeenfullofprofessionalchallengesalongwithenjoymentassociatedwithwork.I
amhappytohaveworkedwithpeoplewithgreyhairswhohadbeenworkingwhen
computerswerejustintroduced.Restoftheprofessionalcareertilldatehasbeenequally

Whentheplacementseasoncame,TCSwasthefirstcomeforplacements.Ihavegreat
respectfortheTataGroupsinceIhavebeenbornandbroughtupinJamshedpur(aka
Tatanagar).Solikeaherdeveryonewhowaseligible,appearedfortheinterviews.Outof
400,around360wereselected.Everyoneisecstaticinthecollege,barringafewwho
wouldbewaitingforWIPRO,SYNTEL,etctocome.
Asthehappinessspreadaround,Ibegantosinkwithinmyself.Ididn'teventoldmy
parentsthatIwasplaced.Ibegantoponder,whyiseveryonesohappy,andmyclose
friendsbegantowonderwhyIwasunhappy.
Facebookwasfilledwithcommentsand#PlacedInTCS.SelfiestakeninKFCetc.as
symbolsofcelebrationwentrampanteverywhere.
Whywaseveryonehappy?Mostpeopleknewthisisthebesttheycangetfortheir
qualification.TheywerenotIITiansorNITians,oreventhegoodstatelevelcolleges.And
theypracticallydon'thaveanyjobskillsrequiredtodoevenalowleveljob.Thusa3lac+
packagewasmarketstandardgoodtodefinesuccess.Eveniftheyhadotherplans,TCS
nowstartedtoactasastrongbaseofsecurityforthem.
WhywasInothappy?Becauseitwastoodamnsimple.Whatwasthebenefitofgetting

exception.
Ifyouwerethefirstchildofyouparents,eventhoughyoumighthavebeenuglyorweak,
yourparentswouldhavelovedyou.
Youmightwanttorememberyourfirsttoy,firstgameyouplayed,firstcrushyoutalked
to...noteverythingwasmagnanimous,butforyouitwasnearperfect.
Humandesireisinsatiable,andthereisnothinglikeperfect.

1.ItwastheFirstjob(ihadnothingforreferencetocompareitwithotherjobs).
2.Myaspirationsarenotlow(notatall,iwasborntosucceed),butTCSgenerallyworksasa
