First grade students first came to the STEM lab and explored with various objects creating shadows with a flashlight. They were able to see how a shadow changes its size as the light source moves. This first lesson was an introduction to shadows along with any lessons conducted in their homeroom. The second part of this lesson is for students to use their knowledge of shadows to create a shadow puppet show. They worked in groups of four to design their puppets, write a script, and practice their presentations. Each group was able to present their final show to their entire class. Next year, I would allow more time for students to write their script and really work on that in detail. First graders need more help with writing. Students were able to make various shadow sizes by moving their puppet closer and further away from the light source. I would like to have stronger flashlights and a darker room. Some students struggled to make a puppet with a precise shape that can be identified on the screen by its shadow. This could be done next year in collaboration with the art teacher and make it a STEAM lesson.
