Grade level: First Grade

Subject: Language Arts

Time: 30- 40 min (5 Days)

I.

Standard:
Write persuasive text
Bases writing on research and prior knowledge
Uses characteristics of the writing genre
Conducts simple investigations
Uses drawings and words to describe and share observations with
others
Collects and records observations using pictures, words and
symbols

II.

Teaching Objective:
Students will be able to persuade the principal to get a class pet
Students will understand what it means to persuade
Students will research why we should have a class pet
Students will write to the principal why we should get a class pet

III.

Introduction
We have discussed getting a class pet, now we need to decide on
the class pet. Then we need to ask the principal.

IV.

Teacher Input and Activities


Day 1- what kind of pet/ research different pets
Research different class pets using Pebble Go, students look up
animals and write down facts in research journal, look for habitat,
food, etc.

Day 2- research the pet


Class vote on pet, then everyone research that pet in order to
know habitat, food, and facts
Research why it is good to have a pet
Day 3- It is important to ask in the right way, what are some
different ways to ask? (beg, persuade, politely, demanding)
Read I Wanna Iguana
Talk about how the boy persuaded the principal
Day 4- begin to write letters
Use the same concepts the boy used in I Wanna Iguana to write
your letter
Day 5- Finish the letters and give to principal

V.

Closure
We have research the best pet to have, talked about the way to
ask the principal, and given him the letters we have written. You
guys have done a great job solving our problem.

VI.

Assignment
Assignment will be the research and letters students write.
