Problem : Alarming Improper Garbage Disposal in the Philippines

Observation:
The Philippines is looming with garbage problems despite the passage of the
Ecological Solid Waste Management Act or the Republic Act (RA) 9003 2007 first
quarter data from the National Solid Waste Management Commission shows that
there are 677 open dumpsites, 343 controlled dumps, and 21 landfills in the
country. An additional 307 dump sites are subject for closure or rehabilitation plans
but without definite schedules for enforcement. About 215 additional landfills are
being proposed to be set up nationwide.
Environmentalists stress that Republic Act 9003 calls for the adoption of the best
environmental practices in ecological waste management and explicitly excludes
waste incineration as an ecological option. These polluting disposal facilities are
major sources of greenhouse gas emissions to the atmosphere which adds to
global warming. Landfills and open dumps, according to studies, account for 34
percent of human-related methane emissions to the atmosphere, a global warming
gas that has 23 times more heat-trapping power than carbon dioxide. These
landfills and open dumps are illegal under RA
Inaction on garbage contributes to the death of at least two persons every minute
due to complications from environmental problems, which could be prevented if
the country only developed a more efficient environmental management program.
Mismanagement of waste has serious environmental consequences: ground and
surface water contamination, local flooding, air pollution, exposure to toxins, and
spread of disease. Many of the disposal sites contain infectious material, thus
threatening sanitation workers and waste pickers.
Hypothesis :
Alternative Hypothesis: The 3R Projectis a big help in solving this improper garbage
proposal.
Null Hypothesis: We can't prevent the bombing problem in improper garbage
disposal
How to solve:
The Three R's: Reduce, Reuse and Recycle
The three R's - reduce, reuse and recycle - all help to cut down on the amount of
waste we throw away. They conserve natural resources, landfill space and energy.
Plus, the three R's save land and money communities must use to dispose of waste
in landfills.
REDUCE

The best way to manage waste is to not produce it. This can be done by shopping
carefully and being aware of a few guidelines:
Buy products in bulk. Larger, economy-size products or ones in concentrated form
use less packaging and usually cost less per ounce.
Avoid over-packaged goods, especially ones packed with several materials such as
foil, paper, and plastic. They are difficult to recycle, plus you pay more for the
package.
Avoid disposable goods, such as paper plates, cups, napkins, razors, and lighters.
Throwaways contribute to the problem, and cost more because they must be
replaced again and again.
Buy durable goods - ones that are well-built or that carry good warranties. They will
last longer, save money in the long run and save landfill space.
REUSE
It makes economic and environmental sense to reuse products. Sometimes it takes
creativity:
Reuse products for the same purpose. Save paper and plastic bags, and repair
broken appliances, furniture and toys.
Reuse products in different ways. Use a coffee can to pack a lunch; use plastic
microwave dinner trays as picnic dishes.
Sell old clothes, appliances, toys, and furniture in garage sales or ads, or donate
them to charities.
Use resealable containers rather than plastic wrap.
Use a ceramic coffee mug instead of paper cups.
Reuse grocery bags or bring your own cloth bags to the store. Do not take a bag
from the store unless you need one.
RECYCLE
Recycling is a series of steps that takes a used material and processes,
remanufactures, and sells it as a new product. Begin recycling at home and at
work:
Buy products made from recycled material. Look for the recycling symbol or ask
store managers or salesmen. The recycling symbol means one of two things
either the product is made of recycled material, or the item can be recycled. For
instance, many plastic containers have a recycling symbol with a numbered code
the identifies what type of plastic resin it is made from. However, just because the
container has this code does not mean it can be easily recycled locally.

Check collection centers and curbside pickup services to see what they accept, and
begin collecting those materials. These can include metal cans, newspapers, paper
products, glass, plastics and oil.
Consider purchasing recycled materials at work when purchasing material for office
supply, office equipment or manufacturing.
Buy products made from material that is collected for recycling in your community.
Use recycled paper for letterhead, copier paper and newsletters.

Action Plan
Objectives
To understand the magnitude of reusable and recyclable material in the municipal
waste stream which adds burden on the municipal authorities in managing such
waste

To understand the concept of reduce, reuse and recycle which save resources and
reduces the burden on the municipal authorities in collection, transportation and
disposal of waste.

To learn the ways of promoting the objective of 3 R3

Significance
Ways on Minimizing Waste and Disposing Them
Proper waste disposal is of great importance to both rural and urban areas. Not
doing this may bring us to danger in many ways and surely everybody knows this.
Time and again, people are always being educated about the importance of waste
disposal but then this process should not stop because every now and then, people
forget. Some of the kids grow, even if they have learned the proper way of
disposing the waste someday they will still forget about it. Big thanks to the people
who make effort to spread the word and continue to be of service to other people.
As a matter of fact, we can see to it that its not that easy to be in their situation
because sometimes, most of them work voluntarily.
Going back to proper waste disposal, there are so many ways on how people can
minimize the accumulation of waste for lesser job to be done in the future. One is
through recycling.

When you recycle at an earlier time, this will be very helpful. Aside from lessening
your work load, you will also be earning. What I mean is that if you are not really
that good in turning trash into something at least youll be selling them which will
add up to your income. The world is getting tough these days and we dont still do
something about it, more disasters will come.
