2a. Identify and describe the following governmental forms: democracy, aristocracy/oligarchy, absolutism,
constitutionalism, totalitarianism, monarchy and republic. (DOK 1)

Introduction/Anticipatory Set
Have students complete the Types of Governments & Leaders mind map. Make sure students feel free to add any
ideas they think of, even if they might be wrong. Use students responses to create a collective mind map on the
board.

Day 1:
Bellwork: Vocabulary on graphic organizer
Government-organizes, makes rules, and protects properties and rights.
Democracy -when you give everyone decision-making power; can either be
direct or indirect

Autocracy is when one person runs the government and makes all the
decisions
Monarchy is a type about autocracy run by a queen or king
Constitutional monarchy the monarchy is limited by a constitution
Dictatorship is also an autocracy a dictator rules the nation by force
*Socialism and communism are not really a type of government they're
more like ideas on how to run a government*
Socialism is an economic system that limits individual ownership; socialist
think all resources should be shared equally
Communist system leaders of the communist party put socialist ideas into
practice they make all the important economic decisions.

TSW use Canvas to collaborate and discuss the following: Students will
choose any 2 types of government, and tell the pros and cons of each type of
government.

Day 3:
Bellwork: Analyze 3 political cartoons on a graphic organizer.
TSW complete Companion Notes while viewing PowerPoint on Who Rules
-Use Bubbl.us to create a mind map
-Read Who Rules
- Check for understanding using the A/B Active Participation Activity on PPT.
-Activity C serves as a vocabulary review.
-Closing return to the mind map we created as a class, and ask students to
look at the map and think of at least one change that should be made. The
mind map should now reflect what they learned in the lesson.

The students will use Padlet to discuss what form of government he/she would classify as the most desirable by
most people? Why?

Formal Assessment: Test taken on Socrative for a grade.
Lesson Extension
Extension/Enrichment:
Students will research countries with different forms of government, tell who the current leader is and decide if
their government is a good government. Why or Why not? (Must support their choice)
Accommodations/Differentiation:
Students needing additional help will be paired with one of the teachers in the room or in a small group of
students that have grasped the concept. Modifications will be made to suit the needs of students with IEPs.
