REVIVAL OF PALLIKARANAI MARSHLANDS

TYPOLOGY
Its going to be a study and design based approach with a specific
theme of landscape conservations and sustainability

DESIGN PHILOSOPHY
Reviving the existing 550 hectares and not disturbing the
development that shrunk the marshlands, for a symbiotic and
practical design approach.

AIM
To revive the marshland and sustain it by proposing a design
which would make Pallikaranai marshland the biggest urban open
space, which would be a recreational, educational and research
space within Chennai.

JUSTIFICATION
The Pallikaranai marsh is important for several reasons. The
marsh is connected to 31 different water bodies, all of which
release surplus water into the marsh during the monsoons.
Therefore, the marsh and its related water bodies are part of a
system that is important for mitigation of flood waters. The marsh
is also crucial for ground water recharge, soil and water
conservation and lends itself as a grazing area and breeding
ground for many species of fish and birds. Furthermore, it adds
aesthetic, cultural and heritage value to the city.
It is a live proposal

OBJECTIVE
To identify and revive the sensitive areas that affect the marsh
and thereby proposing a symbiotic conservation plan that would
benefit both nature and mankind.

SCOPE AND LIMITATIONS

The 135 hectares of land had to be conserved from future
damage caused by illegal occupation of land , sewage water ,
dumpyard , etc .
The site could be transformed into a eco park with sustainable
features along with a marsh front development of a cultural
centre to reflect the culture and heritage value of the city along
with a entertainment plaza .
The development of the marsh will also have a "Urban" impact on
the development of the city
Not to disturb the human interventions to the marsh, other than
the surviving 550 hectare marsh area.
