Issue: Heavy trucks and dangerous goods vehicles travelling through the City

Mitigation Measures:
Require all heavy trucks to use existing Dangerous
Goods Route, re-define as Truck Route
Lobby BCTA to build a Safety Rest Area / Truck
Stop just outside the City

Issue: Red Light Violations

Mitigation Measures:
Replace all signal displays
to LED technology
Provide left-side secondary
signal heads at all locations
where they are missing
Enhanced Signal
Coordination
Review the feasibility of
providing intersection
safety cameras at select
locations

Issue: Sign Retro-Reflectivity

Mitigation Measures:

Upgrade all warning signs that are not already

diamond grade, for consistency
Continue to monitor signs and carry out additional
washing as required (in addition to scheduled)

Issue: Sidewalk snow and ice

Mitigation Measures:

Consider revising snow clearing contract to avoid

accumulation on sidewalks
Enforce snow clearing bylaws with business owners
Longer term: set back sidewalk to reduce accumulation

Issue: Accessibility

Mitigation Measures:
Provide wheelchair ramps on all curbs and islands that
connect to sidewalks and crosswalks

Issue: Sidewalk missing links

Mitigation Measures:
Provide continuity (provide missing links or redirect
pedestrians)

Issue: Right Turn Channelization

Mitigation Measures:
Provide Smart Right-Turn Channels

Issue: East/west left-turn visibility (Alaska/17 and Alaska/15)

Mitigation Measures:
Option 1: Provide E/W left-turn bays
Option 2: Provide E/W left-turn signal phase

Issue: Operations on 8 Street at 102 Avenue

Mitigation Measures:
Extend northbound left-turn restrictions at 102 Ave to all day
Convert west leg to right-in / right-out
Terminate northbound lane prior to intersection

Issue: Motorists not yielding for pedestrians at 8 St/112 Ave Intersection

Mitigation Measures:
Provide pedestrian-activated signal (INSTALLED IN FEB 2016)
Conduct awareness campaign and monitor post-installation behaviour

Issue: Lack of RCMP traffic safety enforcement resources

Mitigation Measures:
Work towards establishing a dedicated traffic
enforcement section

Issue: Lack of integration, monitoring and evaluation

between road safety programs

Mitigation Measures:
Establishing a coordinating committee of stakeholders
representatives
Conduct a Municipal Transportation Safety Assessment

Corridor-wide
improvements related to
trucks and dangerous
goods routes

Implementation of most
promising corridor-wide

All other location-specific

measures that are expected to
yield positive results within the

Low-cost location specific

improvements that fit into
annual programs, including
pavement marking
application
Complete the municipal
transportation safety
assessment

Update policies to allow

for the implementation of
the other corridor-wide
measures (e.g.
accessibility)

Other promising corridor-wide

measures (including those
which require current
standards, practices and
contracts to be updated, such
as snow clearance)
Measure the effectiveness of
the implemented Priority 1 and
2 measures; expand the
effective measures to other
corridor locations (e.g. ped
