Issue Description
On A320 family aircraft with Mod 26925 (Braking and Steering Control
System - BSCS - with alternate braking by wire), the following ECAM
warnings were reported on several occasions :
- BRAKES ALTN R RELEASED,
- BRAKES NWS MINOR FAULT,
associated with fault messages (ABCU(95GG), ABCU(95GG)/BRK ALTN
SERVOVALVE(97GG), BRK ALTN SERVOVALVE(97GG)/ABCU(95GG)...).
Most of these troubles were cleared by the replacement of the Alternate
Brake Servo valve also called Direct Drive Valve (DDV). It has to be noted
that both FIN 97GG (Right hand side) and FIN 98GG (LH side) could be
equally affected.
Consequence
These troubles generated delays, up to flight cancellations. It also induced
replacement of NFF parts / equipment, because DDV was not listed in the
TSM as potential cause.
Investigation Status
- Some faulty DDV have already been investigated by Messier-Bugatti. It
revealed that most of the failures were due to water/humidity ingress in
the potting of the internal pressure transducer. Some other failures were
due to faulty electronic amplifier assemblies.

- Regarding the trouble shooting, some clarifications have already been

included in the TSM, especially regarding the fault confirmation. In light of
the reported cases, Airbus has initiated a review of the different DDV
failure modes and their consequences to further improve the Trouble
Shooting recommendations.
Mitigation / Interim Plan
See PERMANENT OR FINAL SOLUTION.
Maintenance Information
None. Refer to TSM.
Repercussion on A/C Dispatch
On A320 family, a failure of the DDV is NO GO according to MMEL.
On A340-500/-600, please refer to TFU 32.43.18.001.
Solution
A solution has been developped to restore the reliability of the DDV
through an evolution of the internal pressure transducer, and which will be
applicable on both programs (A320 & A340-500/-600):
- On A320: This improvement of the DDV is introduced by Messier-Bugatti
VSB E21330-32-3286 since end of May 2007. The improved DDV is
designated through PN E21330000-1, which is fully interchangeable with
PN E21330000. This new PN is shown in the IPC in the August 2007
revision.
- On A340-500/-600: VSB E21348-32-137 has been issued to introduce
new PN E21348000-5 in place of E21348000-4. This VSB should be
available to operators by end of September 2007.
On both programs, other ways of improvements are still being
contemplated. They might be made available at the occasion of a future
product improvement.
In addition, TSM tasks for A320 A/C in relation with DDV trouble have
been reviewed and amended in order to have a more efficient trouble
shooting. Latest modifications have been included in the February 2008
TSM revision.
