Problem:
For the given state of stress, determine (a) the orientation of the planes of
maximum in-plane shearing stress, (b) the maximum in-plane shearing stress, (c)
the corresponding normal stress.

Solution:
From the information on the drawing, the stresses are:

x = 8ksi

y = 12ksi

xy = 5ksi

Determine the planes of maximum in-plane shear:

tan (2 S ) =

( x y )
2 xy

( 8 12)ksi
2(5ksi )

S = 31.72
Also @ + 90 S = 121.7

Ans

Determine the maximum shear stress:

max

+ (5ksi ) = 11.18ksi

Ans

The corresponding normal stress occurs at the average normal stress:

Problem:
The grain of a wooden member forms an angle of 15 with the vertical. For the
state of stress shown, determine (a) the in-plane shearing stress parallel to the
grain, (b) the normal stress perpendicular to the grain.

Solution:
From the information given:

x =0

y =0

xy = 400 psi

= 15

2 = 30

Transforming the shear stress to the plane parallel to the grain:

x y

sin (2 ) + xy cos(2 )
2
= 0 + (400 psi ) cos( 30) = 346.4 psi

x'y' =

Ans

The normal stress perpendicular to the grain is:

x + y

x y

cos(2 ) + xy sin (2 )
2
2
= 0 + 0 + (400 psi ) sin ( 30) = 200 psi

Problem:
For the given state of stress, determine (a) the orientation of the planes of
maximum in-plane shearing stress, (b) the maximum in-plane shearing stress, (c)

The corresponding normal stress is at C on Mohrs Circle. This can be read

directly as:

Problem:
The grain of a wooden member forms an angle of 15 with the vertical. For the
state of stress shown, determine (a) the in-plane shearing stress parallel to the
grain, (b) the normal stress perpendicular to the grain using Mohrs Circle.

Solution:
From the given information:

x =0

y =0

xy = 400 psi

= 15

2 = 30

Plot Mohrs Circle:

X : ( x , xy ) = (0,400 psi )
Y : ( y , xy ) = (0,400 psi )
C : ( avg ,0 ) = (0,0 )
R = CX = 400 psi

Determine the shear stress parallel to the grain:

x ' y ' = R cos 30 = (400 psi ) cos 30 = 346.4 psi

Ans

The normal stress perpendicular to the grain is:

x' = avg R sin 30 = 0 (400 psi )sin 30 = 200 psi

Ans

The same answers as before.

Problem:
The unpressurized cylindrical storage tank shown has a 3/16 in. wall thickness
and is made of steel having a 60 ksi ultimate strength in tension. Determine the
maximum height h to which it can be filled with water if a factor of safety of 4.0 is
desired. (Specific weight of water = 62.4 lbf/ft3.)

Solution:
The water in the tank will create an elevation head (pressure) within the tank.
This head will be maximum at the base of the tank.
1st determine the internal radius of the tank:
ri =

do

in = 149.8in
t =

Next determine the allowable stress incorporating the safety factor:

4.0

The hoop stress will be the limiting stress for this cylindrical pressure vessel.

Problem:
The cylindrical portion of the compressed-air tank shown is fabricated of 0.25 in.
thick plate welded along a helix forming an angle = 30 with the horizontal.
Knowing that the allowable stress normal to the weld is 10.5 ksi, determine the
largest gage pressure that can be used in the tank.

Solution:
We need to transform the stresses to the plane lining up with the weld. To aid in
visualizing this transformation, Ill use Mohrs Circle.
The two principle stresses for this cylindrical pressure vessel are:
