NOTES

TRADITIONAL

There is no doubt we live in a troubled, confused,

tough world. There are trials and serious difficulties
all around us. Our nation has stresses and internal
turmoil. The Psalm we are looking at today gives
absolute assurance and comfort that our God is faithful
and present in our lives. We live in a global culture
that completely rejects any absolutes, especially in
relation to God. If we are not careful we can be lulled
into believing God is too distant or remote to care. The
closing hymn was written by a man who experienced
trauma in a rough world. As a young man on his
way to study at the university, Georg Neumark was
attacked on the road and robbed of all his money and
possessions, save a little money he had sewn into his
shirt. Virtually broke, he wandered about looking for
any kind of work. Eventually he was hired by a wealthy
judge. In gratitude to God for His provision, he wrote
our closing hymn (1641), both text and tune to the honor
of my beloved Lord. Verse one gives an overview of trust.
The latter three verses give us the application. Both
J.S. Bach and Felix Mendelssohn used his tune in some
of their compositions. Our God was faithful then and
remains faithful today.
