Planning of residential buildings, Public buildings and
Multistoried structure.
Planning of Earthquake resistant buildings considering
symmetry, simplicity, continuity, staircase, water tank etc.
Preparing Working Drawings of Residential Buildings.
Varioustypes, Scale selection, Material description.
Elements of Perspective Drawing-basic terms, One point and
Two point Perspective.

History,

Ancient Planning in India, Origin and Growth of

towns, Satellite Town, Ribbon development
Civic surveys: Purpose, Types, Data required,
Presentation.
Elements of City Planning, Circulation, Zoning and land
use, Housing, Landscape pattern, Master plan, Town
Center, Civic centers, Shopping Center, Town Planning
Schemes, CBD.
Elements of Neighborhood.
Slum: definition, Slum improvements.

Residential Planning: Two storied Building: Plans, elevation, section, lay-out

plan, key plan, site plan, area table, schedule of opening.Scale-1:100.
Public Building: Ground Floor plan, typical floor plan, elevation, section, layout plan, key plan, site plan, area table, schedule of opening.
Working Drawing: sheet should accommodate min. six types with sectional
details. ( Furniture plan, Drainage lay out, Toilet Detail, Wood work detail,
Kitchen detail, Electrical plan etc)
Perspective Drawing: Two point perspective of sheet -1 planning.
Assignment -1: Principles of Planning & Architecture
Assignment -2: Building Bye laws
Assignment -3: Town Planning

Field Visit: Field visits based on course content are suggested.

1.0 INTRODUCTION

Drawing is the language of engineers

Drawing reveals

components of structure
dimensions and relative positions
materials of construction
Movements (door/window shutters, flow of water in bath etc.)

A planned house offers max utility, comfort and good

appearance.
Civil engg student must be capable of planning, designing
and drawing building plans, sections and elevations.
They should also be capable of clearly reading any given
drawing.

Building: Any structure for whatsoever purpose and

of whatsoever materials constructed and every part
of that whether used for human habitation or not,
includes all the structural elements like foundation,
masonry, roof etc. with all the services like w.c.,
bath, stair etc.
Tents, shamianas, tarpulin shelters etc. erected for
temporary and ceremonial occasions shall not be
considered as buildings.

Building classifications (according to use)

Residential any building with sleeping accommodation is

provided for normal residential purpose, with/wo cooking &
dining, includes single/multi family dwellings, flats, lodge,
restaurants, hostel
Educational used for school, college, assembly for education
Institutional medical or other treatment, penal or correctional
detention in which liberty of inmates is restricted, includes
hospitals, sanatorium, jail/prison, mental asylum
Assembly groups of people meet for amusement, recreation,
social, religious, political, civil, travel and similar purposes,
includes theatre, city hall, marriage hall, auditoriums, exhibition
hall, museums, gymnasiums, passenger stations and terminals

Business used for transaction of business (other than covered in

mercantile), for keeping accounts and records, offices, banks,
court houses, libraries
Mercantile used as shops, stores, market for display and sale
of merchandise either wholesale or retail,
Industrial where products or materials of all kinds and
properties are fabricated, assembled, manufactured or
processed, as assembly plants, laboratories, power plants,
refineries, dairies
Storage used for primarily for storage or sheltering of goods,
wares or merchandise, includes warehouse, cold storage plants,
freight depots, store house, garages etc.
Hazardous used for storage, handling, manufacturing or
processing of highly combustible or explosive materials/
chemicals
