Figure 1
(b). A typical jetliner lands at a speed of 160 miles/h and decelerates at the rate of (10
miles/h)/s. If the plane travels at a constant speed of 160 miles/h for 1.0 s after
landing before applying the brakes, what is the total displacement of the aircraft
between touchdown on the runway and coming to rest? (Firstly you have to
convert the miles/h to m/s). See Figure 2, below.

(c).
A train is moving at 32 m/s when the engineer is informed that a school bus full
of orphans and puppies is on the track ahead of him. The train is capable of
decelerating at 0.8 m/s2.
(i). How long does it take for the train to come to a halt?
(ii). How far does it go after the brakes are applied?

2.
(a).
At what speed must it be thrown to reach a height ymax meters above the
ground level?
(ii). How long does it take the ball to reach the maximum height, tup?
(b). If we throw a ball straight up in the air and it comes back down to the same spot,
what is the average velocity of the ball over one complete trip up and back down.
(c).
A ball rolls off the edge of a horizontal table 1.32 m high. It strikes the floor at a
point 4.45 m horizontally away from the edge of the table. What was the balls
speed at the moment that it left the table-top?
(d). A bicyclist unfamiliar with the terrain is riding along a level sidewalk when he
goes over the edge of a staircase. He hits the staircase 3.7 m below the edge, and
3.7 m horizontally from the edge. How fast was he going when he went over the
edge?
(4, 2, 2, 2 marks)
3. (a).
(i).

(c).
A stone is thrown upward from the top of a building at an angle of 30.0 o to the
horizontal and with an initial speed of 20.0 m/s, as in figure below. The point of
release is 45.0 m above the ground. Neglect the air resistance (Figure 4).
Figure 4
(i). How long does it take for the stone to hit the ground?
(ii). Find the stones speed at impact.
(iii). Find the horizontal range of the stone.
