STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

Communication has been the only vehicle by which people send message to one
another. With the modern digital technology, communication has developed to be a
worldwide means by which people in any place on this planet or even in the outer
space can contact one another fast and easily. This digitalized communication inspires
me to to further efforts to understand how it works and what can be done to advance
its operation. This is the reason why I chose communication engineering as my major.
While getting M.S degree from , with GPA 3.8, I published two IEEE
conference papers and one IEEE journal paper and Two IC tape-out and measurement
records. However, I found a question that (
). So, I want to do more research to
resolve this question. When I read the research overview on the website of
Communication and Signal Procession Laboratory (CSPL) of your school, I found
your research programs and group may resolve my question, especially, the three
programs: Multi-user communication systems and networks, Combined source and
channel coding for mobile radio networks, and Network Security, which are highly
related to my master thesis, so that I am eager to joining your research group to
complete my study of communication engineering.
Compared with others, the contributions of professors of CPSL to the
advancement of science and technology are distinguished and unrivaled. For example,
Dr. Lius research interests as well as publications completely attract me, being highly
germane to my previous work, Cooperative Communication with Network Coding.
According to the contents of one of Dr. Lius books, Cooperative Communications
and Networking, published by Cambridge University Press, I found that many of the
cooperative communication techniques are addressed in the book that provide me
with a number of concepts so that I can modify my system models to be more
practical rather than the theoretical prototype in my master thesis. For instance, I did
not consider multi-hop channels in my system; if I extended my system model to
multi-hop channels, the overall scenario would approach to be realized. However, Dr.
Liu might not yet discuss a specific in the book: network coding. My works involve
network coding, which is an old concept but has been reinterpreted and applied to
cooperative communication system since A.D. 2000, the year when Dr. Robert Li and
Dr. Raymond Yeung proposed the simple and effective network coding model. The
reason why I exploited network coding is that I attempt to save transmission
bandwidth and transmission time while transmitting between users and a base station,
since both are related to the costs. Moreover, network coding method provides not
only transmission efficiency but also network security, a significant issue that I have

not yet initiated in my work. Therefore, I am so eager to studying at graduate school

in University of Maryland that I will be able to continue my further study and push it
to an extended and advanced realm.
Optimization theory, one of the most important concepts in communication
system, is a curriculum that I did not take in my former university. However, I write
something about it in my master dissertation though I could not solve it by theoretical
demonstration; instead, I exploited Mathematica to solve the complicated equations. It
does not mean using Mathematica is not an appropriate way to analyze the equations.
But if I could solve the problem by optimization theory, it would perfectly derive the
relations between the performance and the output SNR equations varying from
different given parameters. As I see, the research interests of Dr. La, Dr. Narayan, Dr.
Shayman, Dr. Ulukus, et al focus on system optimization and design that I am eager to
learning for proposing a more reliable and robust system in the future.
In sum, I believe that graduate study at University of Maryland will be the most
suitable extension of my academic pursuit and a major step towards achieving my
