Lab Layout & Study of Wind Tunnel

1. Layout:
The way in which the parts of something are arranged or laid out. Layout is
concerned with the physical location of transforming resources or working
equipment; that is deciding where to put the facilities, machines, equipment and
staff.

2. Lab Layout:
Lab layout means the arrangement of apparatus, facilities, furniture etc. in the
available space of lab.

3. Importance of Lab Layout:

The importance of a layout would be better appreciated if one understands the
influence of an efficient layout on the manufacturing function: it makes it smooth
and efficient. Operating efficiencies, such as economies in the cost of handling
materials, minimization of production delays and avoidance of bottlenecks all
these depend on a proper layout.

5. Wind Tunnel:
A wind tunnel is a tool used in aerodynamic research to study the effects of air
moving past solid objects. A wind tunnel consists of a tubular passage with the
object under test mounted in the middle. Air is made to move past the object by a
powerful fan system or other means. The test object, often called a wind tunnel
model is instrumented with suitable sensors to measure aerodynamic forces,
pressure distribution, or other aerodynamic-related characteristics.

6. Open Wind Tunnel (HM 170):

i.

Technical Description:

HM 170 is an "Eiffel" type open wind tunnel used to demonstrate and measure the
aerodynamic properties of various models. For this purpose, air is drawn in from the
environment and accelerated. The air flows around a model, such as an airfoil, in a
measuring section. The air is then decelerated in a diffuser and pumped back into the
open by a fan.
The carefully designed nozzle contour and a flow straightener ensure a uniform
velocity distribution with little turbulence in the closed measuring section. The flow
cross-section of the measuring section is square. The built-in axial fan with guide vane
and a variable-speed drive is characterized by an energy-efficient operation at high
efficiency. Air velocities of up to 28m/s can be reached in this open wind tunnel. The
trainer is equipped with an electronic two-component force sensor. Lift and drag are
detected and displayed digitally. The air velocity in the measuring section is displayed
on the inclined tube manometer.
By using the system for data acquisition HM 170.60, the measured values for
pressure, displacement/angle, velocity and force can be transferred to a PC where
they can be analyzed with the software.
Extensive accessories allow a variety of experiments, for example lift measurements,
pressure distributions, boundary layer analysis or visualization of streamlines .
