Kitab al-Awliya Ibn Abi Dunya

1. Abu Said al-Khudri has related that the Messenger of Allah said,
Allah has special servants from His creation; He brings them up in Afiya,
and he grants them death in afiya, and He enters them into the Garden in
Afiya.

2. It is related from Zaid bin Aslam who relates from his father, who
relates that one day Umar entered into the Masjid and he found
Muadh ibn Jabl weeping at the grave of the Messenger of Allah . So
he asked him, What is it that makes you cry, O Muadh? He replied, A
hadith that I head from the Messenger of Allah ,
A small amount of ostentation is shirk; indeed Allah loves the pious,
hidden and pure who when they are absent are not missed, and when
they are present are not known. Their hearts are lanterns of
guidance, they emerge from every dark recess (unharmed).

3. It is related from Abdullah bin Razin from Sayyidina Ali, who said, I
asked the Messenger of Allah regarding the Abdal. He replied,
They are 60 men.

4. It is related from Ibn Abbas, who said that the Messenger of Allah
said, There are 3 characteristics, whoever possesses them receives
the wilaya of Allah and obedience to Him: noble forbearance which
expels the foolishness of fools from himself, true carefulness which

refrains him from disobedience to Allah, and a good character

through which he deals with people.

5. Ishaq bin Abu Darda relates that a man was mentioned before alHasan, who then said, Allah the Blessed and Exalted says, If I know
that adhering to My obedience is the dominant state of My servant
then I favour him with pre-occupation with Me, and cutting him off
from everything but Me.

6. It is related from Said bin Jubair who said, It was said, O Messenger
of Allah , who are the Awliya of Allah? He replied, They are those
who when they are seen; Allah is remembered.

7. It is related from Asma bint Yazid that the Messenger of Allah said,
Shall I not inform you about the best of you? The Companions
replied, Of course, O Messenger of Allah . He said, When they are
seen; Allah is remembered.

8. Abu Muhammad al-Thaqafi has related I Heard Anas bin Mallik say:
We were with the Messenger of Allah in Nabuk, when the sun rose
with a shine, illumination and a light that we had never seen. Jibril came
to the Prophet and the Prophet said,
O Jibril, why is it that I see the sun with such a shine, illumination and
light that I have not seen before?

He replied, That is because of Muawiyya al-Laithi, who has died in

Madinah today; Allah has sent 70,000 angels to pray over him.
The Prophet asked, Why is that?
Jibril replied, Because he used to recite Qul Huwa Allahu Ahad in
abundance throughout the night and the day, whilst walking, standing
and sitting. O Messenger of Allah, would you like me to seize the Earth
for you, so that you can pray over him?
The Prophet said, Yes, and he prayed over him and then returned.

9. Jafar bin Sulayman said I heard Malik bin Dinar ask Ali bin Zaid
whilst he was crying, O Abu al-Hasan, for how long will a Wali of
Allah be held on the Sirat?
He replied, The time it would take him to pray the prescribed prayer,
with complete ruku and sujud.
He then asked, Has it reached you that the Sirat will be expanded for
the Awliya? He replied, Yes.

10.

It is related from Said bin Abi Hilal who said, It has reached us

that the Sirat will be finer than a hair for some people, and that for
some people it will be like a wide valley.

11.

It is related from Zaid bin Aslam who said that the Messenger

of Allah said,

Allah has servants who are the people of well-being (ahl al-muafa), in
the world and the Hereafter.

12.

Abu Wail has related from Ibn Masud who said, There are

some people who are the keys to the remembrance of Allah, when
they are seen; Allah is remembered.

13.

It is related from Abdullah al-Jadali who said

Allah said, O Dawud, love Me, and love those who love Me, and endear
Me to the people.
He replied, O Lord, I love you and I love those who love you, but how do
I endear You to the people?
He replied, Remind them of My favours, so they do not think of Me,
except good.

14.

It is related from Kab who said, I find in the Torah that there is

no love towards anyone from the people of the Earth except that it
begins with Allah, and then descends upon the people of the heavens,
and then descends upon the people of the Earth. And there is no
dislike for anyone from the people of the Earth except that it begins
from Allah and it descends upon the people of the Heavens, and then
descends upon the people of the Earth. He then recited: Indeed those
who believe and work righteousness, the Merciful will place love for
them.

15.

It is related from Abu Said al-Khudri who said that the

Messenger of Allah said,

Shall I not inform you of those who are the most beloved to Allah? They
replied, Of course O Messenger of Allah, and we thought that the
Prophet would name a particular person.
The Prophet said, The most beloved of you to Allah are those who are
beloved to the people. He then said, Shall I not inform you of those who
are most loathed by Allah?
We replied, Of course, O Messenger of Allah, and we thought that the
Prophet would name a particular person.
The Prophet said, The most loathed of you to Allah are those who are
the most loathed by people.

16.

Hazm bin Abi Hazm has mentioned that he heard al-Hasan say

that a man from the companions of the Messenger of Allah say

By the One who holds my soul in His hand, if you want I will swear to
you by Allah, that the most beloved of servants to Allah are those who
endear Allah to His servants and fill the Earth with Nasiha.

17.

It is related from Ata bin Yasar who said,

Musa said, O Lord, who are your people? Those people, who will have
the sanctuary of the shade of Your Throne on the Day of Judgement.

He replied, They are those who have empty hands (turba aydiyhim),
pure hearts, those who love each other for My majesty, those who
remember Me when I remember them, and I remember them when they
remember Me. They perform wudu completely in difficulty conditions,
and they turn to My remembrance just as an eagle returns to its nest,
they are burdened with My love just as a child is burdened with the love
of people, they become angry over My sanctity when violated just as a
leopard is angered when captured.

18.

It is related from Abdul Samad bin Maqal bin Munabbih who

said that he heard his uncle Wahb bin Munabbih say,

I have found written in the last 3 lines of the Zabur, O Dawud listen
to Me, for the Truth I speak; whoever meets Me and He loves Me, I
will enter Him into My Garden.

19.

It is related from Ahmad bin al-Hawari who said that he heard

Muhammad bin Bakr say that Abu Abdullah al-Banaji say: If you
want to become from the Abdal then love that which Allah has willed,
and whoever loves that which Allah has willed, then only those
decrees and decisions of Allah will descend upon him which he loves.

20.

It is related from Kab who said, Since the time of Nuh, there

will always remain upon the Earth 14 people by whom Allah will
remove punishment. This was mentioned to Ibrahim who said, It
used to be said that if there were 5, then punishment would be
averted.
