he and his wife post to the
account that portrays the life
of their beloved rescue dog
around Rockaway. I would
like to say mildly obsessed.

born in the summer and the family lives on the Island, New Jersey
or Connecticut, get out in front
and suggest a beach day. Tell
them to come here.
They will see through your blatant, outrageous attempt to avoid
leaving Rockaway. They may
hate you for it. But theres a good
chance theyll accept, so do it.
Couples marry for love in Rockaway but if its a mixed marriage
(one family in Rockaway and
the other anywhere else) theres
gotta be a pre-nup. Marriage
pre-nups are written not over
finances but over leaving the
beach during June, July, and
August. Honey, I love you and
your family but theres no way
were visiting them in the summer. And we have to put that in
writing.
We live and enjoy Rockaway
for five months a year. Theres the
big three and May and September. The other seven months we
endure. Its the price of paradise.
Those who dont live here just
dont appreciate how those five
months are ours. We do not want
to leave. Even when we vacation
during those five good months
Page 5
we are happy to get back. If you
vacation during the summer you
cannot impress anyone here, no
matter how spectacular your trip
was. You vacation somewhere
warm in the winter and people
here have extreme envy. They
want you to tell them more so
they might feel a wave of vicarious
warmth.
You vacation in the summer
and no one cares. You might have
gone somewhere amazing but you
missed Rockaway. Your amazing
trip gets stuck with an asterisk. You
cant brag. No one cares.
We are protective of our five
measly months. We do not want
anything intruding on summer
glory.
You might be invited to a party or barbecue at a Hamptons
mansion but you will not be happy. You will be stuck in traffic
both ways. You will wonder what
youre missing back in Rockaway.
You utter The Rockaway Groan:
I gotta leave Rockaway for this?
I gotta leave Rockaway to sit in
someones backyard?
So, a word to the wise, careful
with your invitations. And heres
hoping this column travels.

You might have seen the story
about a boat in distress in Jamaica
Bay using a cork from an Absolut
vodka bottle to plug a hole and
avert disaster. Well, another detail
emerged: said cork was supplied
by Bob Leckie of The Wharf. Bob
knows the bar business but he
knows his way around boats, too.

Assemblyman Phil Goldfeder
announced that he wont be
running for re-election.
We
always thought hed stay in office
until he landed on the front page
of The Rockaway Times (it was so
easy for him to do that in other
Queens papers!). He used to
tell us he couldnt compete with
sunsets. Sorry Phil this week its
a dog!

Build It Back has frustrated
and continues to frustrate so
many people. The de Blasio
administration laid the blame
on Bloomberg but our current
mayor was elected in 2013 and
revamped the program in March,
2014. Why are so many people
still without answers and some
without homes? Many of them
are most frustrated by a lack of
communication. Who ya gonna
blame now, Mister Mayor?

Our Summer Guides will be
distributed over the next few
weeks. Weve heard from LOTS of
you not being able to get them but
more are on the way. Once our
papers run out at our orange news
racks around town (as they always
do!- thanks) we try to fill the boxes
with Summer Guides.
