Pleasant Hill History Books Have Arrived!

Quilt Raffle Planned at Sesquicentennial Celebration

The Pictorial History of Pleasant Hill books are here! Please

plan to pick up your order at the Pleasant Hill History Center
Saturday mornings from 10 a.m. til noon and Mondays from 3-5
p.m.

During the Pleasant Hill Sesquicentennial Celebration on

Saturday, June 25, the Pleasant Hill History Center will raffle a quilt.
The quilt block will be a Log Cabin Star, a very old and versatile
block. The center of each log cabin block is black, indicating the fire
in the hearth is out. Many thanks to Rosalie Hoover of Fabrics and
Crafts in Ludlow Falls for the information.
The quilt was made by the Batty Binders Quilt Club of Miami
County and was originally raffled as a fundraiser. Donna Favorite
won the quilt and has donated it to the History Center to be raffled
again, with all proceeds to benefit the History Center/Museum.
Tickets are $1 each, available at the History Center, 8 E.
Monument (open Mondays 3-7); at the Sesquicentennial Celebration
(at the Newton H.S. soccer field); or by contacting Donna Favorite at
937-676-8431. The drawing will be held at the close of the
Sesquicentennial Celebration. You dont have to be present to win.
The quilt can be seen at the Pleasant Hill History Center or at
pleasanthillhistorycenter.com.
The History Center is also selling coasters, glasses, pictures of
Pleasant Hill, and pencils. Notecards depicting historic sites by local
artist Marcus Miller, M.D., are also available at the History Center
and will be at the Sesquicentennial.

Covington Dental, formerly Dr. Forrest Blythe, DDS, would like

Dr. Woehrmyer and husband Greg, who reside in Minster, have a
7-month-old son, Maxwell. In addition to practicing dentistry, Dr.
Woehrmyer enjoys traveling and the outdoors with her family. She is
a graduate of Fort Loramie High School, The Ohio State University,
where she graduated with a Bachelor of Science major in
Microbiology, and Wright State University, where she received her
Masters of Public Health. Dr. Woehrmyer is excited to be back in her
home town area to serve her local community.
Dr. Woehrmyer is looking forward to joining Covington Dental

Eat Great, Feel Great! at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, June 9, at the MiltonUnion Public Library. The presentation by certified Crossfit trainer
Courtney Trumbull is part of the Adult Exercise Your Mind Summer
Reading Program.
Trumbull will be sharing in a fun and informative way how putting
the right kinds of foods in your body can help you achieve maximum
health. Although Trumbull has always been active, her passion for nutrition and overall health began when she joined a Crossfit gym in
2013.

Hoffman United Methodist Church will hold an All Church Family

Garage Sale Thursday, June 16. This huge sale will be held inside in
the churchs activity center. Doors will open at 8:30 a.m. and close at
1 p.m.
There will be lots of clothing articles, with most sizes available at
25 cents each. There will also be many household items, toys, and
miscellaneous articles. Many items will be priced at 25 cents.
Proceeds from this event will go towards local missions.

five miles earns a chance in the drawing for the prize of your choice.
This program is for students in Grades 6-8. Everyone who signs up

summer to reunite with some publisher friends we havent seen for quite some time. Joe, the publisher who hosts the event, sent me dates that we should possibly attend for 2016. I sent back the
dates I was sure of, and everything seemed fine until I returned home and told Ginger.

University of Dayton students that received an outstanding delegation award during the recent National Model United Nations
Conference in New York City.
These designations go to the top 10 percent of delegations at
the conference, according to Tony Talbott, University of Dayton
Model United Nations club advisor.
The National Model United Nations Conference gives college
students worldwide a better understanding of the United Nations'
inner workings, and prepares them to become global citizens and
the next generation of international leaders. The conference,
which the University of Dayton club has attended for 40 years,
has grown to more than 6,000 students from 411 colleges and
universities from five continents.

When I received the date, August 5th, Ginger informed me that we would be on our River Cruise.
Yeah, I remember that now, I muttered.
Ill call Joe and see if I can get the dates changed, she asserted.
When Ginger reentered the room, I knew I had done something wrong.
What did he say, I questioned.
He said that you had included that date on your reply back to him, she explained. I told him to
contact me from now on. You just cant remember all our dates, or my classes at Bruckner.

Keys to good listening:

1. Limit your own talking. Its extremely difficult to talk and listen as the same time.
2. Think like the person youre talking to. Their problems and needs are important and youll understand and retain them better if you understand and reflect their point of view.
3. Ask questions. If you dont understand something or feel you may have missed a point, clear it
up immediately to avoid embarrassment later.
(especially if its your wife.)
4. Dont interrupt. A pause, even a long pause, doesnt always mean the person is finished. (especially if its your wife.)
5. Concentrate. Focus your mind on what the person is saying. Practice shutting off outside distractions (even if it is a 1965 Corvette passing by.)
This weeks bottom line: Every once in awhile, take the scenic route.

On Saturday, March 5, Darke County Parks hosted its annual Maple Sugarin at the Prairie Festival
in conjunction with the Friends of the Darke County Parks Waffle Breakfast. Over 500 people, including volunteers and staff, enjoyed the sausage and endless waffle breakfast. The Friends also hosted an
extremely successful bake sale of maple flavored goodies.
Throughout the breakfast and into the afternoon, park staff led tours illustrating the science, history, and process of making maple syrup, culminating in a stop at the sugar shack where visitors could
see maple sap boiling down to syrup. A backyard sugaring display also illustrated the process on a
much smaller scale. Despite the threat of morning rain which never arrived, park staff were very
pleased with the large number of people venturing out into the damp and chilly morning to learn more
about Ohios cultural heritage. After the tour, everyone was encouraged to meander down the trail to
the blacksmith shop and log house where historical volunteers were treating callers to a taste of history with samples of onion pie, beef tongue, and life on the frontier.
Throughout the sugaring season volunteers collected about 850 gallons of sap from two private
locations and boiled that down to 18 gallons of syrup. Before the festival, about 250 school children
also visited the park to learn about this sweet treat.
The Park District and Friends would like to thank the following business for their donations: New
Madison Kiwanis Club for the use of their sausage trailer and club members to cook sausage; Butcher
Block and Smokehouse for the discount on sausage and monetary donation; Winners Meats for the
beef tongue cooked in the log house during the festival; and KitchenAid Experience for the new waffle irons donated last year. The Darke County Park District would also like to thank the volunteers who
donated countless hours helping with collecting and boiling sap, the waffle breakfast, helping with the
school groups, and doing historical interpretation.
