Digital Africa requires innovation in information systems and technology (IST) that can be exploited
by businesses, governments and individuals to accelerate the digitization of their activities and
processes. Innovation in IST enables the digitization of activities and processes that holds
considerable promise for socio-economic advancement of Africa. Digitization is the socio-technical
process of applying digitizing techniques across industries and contexts in ways that affect and shape
their underlying infrastructures.
This process enables more efficient and effective creation, storage and distribution of content,
applications and services as witnessed in industries such as television, journalism, banking, education
and book publishing. Businesses, governments and people of Africa stand to benefit greatly from
swifter delivery of products and services at lower costs through digital innovation.
The 2016 edition of ACIST aims to facilitate the achievement of digital Africa. The conference brings
together researchers, practitioners, and educators in IST to present research and development works
and share ideas that enhance innovation and application of IST in Africa. Thus, it seeks to promote the
right combination of digital innovation in IST and conventional African wisdom.
