ThisFoundationlevelisintendedtohelpallnovicecomputersgetuptospeedquickly.This
manualwillalsohelpmoreexperienceduserswhohavelittletonoexperiencewithExcel2007
andtheribboninterface.
Thismanualwillcoverdifferentfeaturesoftheinterface,giveabriefoverviewofallthetabsin
theribbon,showusershowtoprint,coversomesimplescenarios,andcoverthebasicsof
formatting.Bytheendofthismanual,usersshouldbecomfortablewithcreatinganew
spreadsheet,workingwithbasicformulae,makingtheirlookprofessionalandpresentable,and
thensavingandprintingthespreadsheet.
Ingeneral,themanualisgearedtowardsthenovicecomputeruser.Ifyouareaninstructor,

64bitcomputerthatusedWindows7Ultimate.Ifyouareaninstructor,youcanuseany
versionofWindowsthatisaccessibletoyourstudents.AnyfeaturespecifictoWindows7in
thismanualwillbemarkedassuch.
Occasionally,thismanualmayreferencewherecertainkeysareonthekeyboard(suchas
Insert,Home,orPageUp).Thedirectionsaregivenbasedonastandarddesktopkeyboardthat

WhatisMicrosoftOfficeExcel2010?
MicrosoftOfficeExcel2010isthefourteenthversionofMicrosoftsspreadsheetprogram.A
spreadsheetisessentiallyalargeflexiblegridthatisusedtoholdinformation,usually
numerical.
Thespreadsheetismadeupofrowsandcolumns.Theintersectionofarowandcolumnis
calledacell:
UsingExcel,youcananalyzelargeamountsofdata,movesetsofdataaroundtogetadifferent
pictureofyourfigures,andgenerateanumberofdifferentchartsanddiagramstohelp
summarizethedata.

WhatsNewinExcel2010?
Excel2010sinterfacedoesnotmakeuseofmenuslikeyoumaybefamiliarwith.Instead,Excel
usesatabsystemthatgroupslikecommandsatthetop.Thisinterface,calledtheribbon,was

AboutExcelFileTypes
Excel2010usesafileformatknownasMicrosoftExcelXMLformat.XML(extensiblemarkup
language)isaveryflexibletypeofcomputerlanguage.XMLissimilarinnaturetoHTML(Hyper
TextMarkupLanguage,thelanguageusedtobuildWebpages),butisdesignedmoreforthe
communicationofinformationratherthanthepresentationofinformation.XMLwas
incorporatedintotheOffice2007fileformattingsystemtofacilitatecommunicationofdata
