Abstract

Introduction

Plants need nutrients to grow and fertilizers are a good source of nutrients that may be lacking in the
soil. However too much of anything is not a good thing.

Plants absorb water from the soil into the roots through a process called osmosis. This process will
require the salt content inside the roots to be higher than the salt content of the soil. As a result, the
water molecules will migrate from the soil into the roots in order to balance the salt level in the soil and in
the roots.

Using too much fertilizer will increase the salt content of the soil. If the salt content of the soil becomes
higher than the salt content of the roots, the water molecules will migrate out of the root into the soil
causing root burn. This will cause the plant to grow more slowly, become dehydrated and eventually die.

Too little fertilizer will cause the plants not being able to grow at the optimal speed due to the lack of
nutrients in the soil.

Therefore using the correct amounts of fertilizer recommended by the manufacturer is the safest way for
the plants to grow healthily.

Body

Fertilizer comes in two categories: manufactured and natural. Manufactured fertilizer releases its
nutrients over a few days to a few weeks, with some types specially formulated to release more slowly
over months. Natural fertilizer can take several months or years to release its nutrients. However, both
types can contain high amounts of salt that prevent plants from growing.
Plant nutrients are divided into primary and secondary nutrients. Primary nutrients consist of nitrogen,
phosphorous and potassium, which often appear in fertilizers. Plants use primary nutrients in large
quantities as they grow. Secondary nutrients such as calcium, magnesium and sulfur are also used
heavily by plants, but they are usually already present in the soil.
The most common cause of small plant growth is a lack of sufficient nitrogen in the soil. Different plants
require different amounts, but an excess amount of nitrogen can also produce pleasant results. Soil
changes are made by adding fertilizer to the soil but there are different types of fertilizers. There is bulky
organic fertilizer, such as cow manure, bat guano, bone meal, and organic compost and green manure
crops. And then there is also chemical fertilizer which is also referred to as inorganic fertilizer and is
made up with different formulations to suit a variety of specified uses. Though many governments and
agricultural departments go to great lengths to increase the supply of organic fertilizers, such as bulky
organic manures and composting materials, there is just not enough of these fertilizers available to meet
the existing and future fertilizer needs. Compared to organic compost, chemical or inorganic fertilizers
also have the added advantage of being less bulky. Being less bulky makes chemical fertilizer easier to
transport, both overland and from the soil into the plants itself, because they get to be available to the
plant relatively quickly when incorporated as part of the plant-food constituents. Chemical fertilizer
usually comes in either granular or powder form in bags and boxes, or in liquid formulations in bottles.
The different types of chemical fertilizers are usually classified according to the three principal elements,
namely Nitrogen, Phosphorous and Potassium, and may, therefore, be included in more than one group.

There also exists liquid fertilizer and this has better results in the plant growth becuase it has tiny pieces
of fertilizers that are in suspension in the wter. It helps the fertilizer move through the soil to the seed .
It also helps plant move nutrients move around. Think in this way the wter in our bodies helps move

nutrients around , well the same happens with plants. Osmosis is the process in which nutrients move
from reas
