1.4. Glossary/Definitions
vSpace Server computer system running the NComputing vSpace Server software.
vSpace Client computer system running the NComputing vSpace Client software.
Access Device hardware device containing an embedded version of vSpace Client. L300 or M300.
NC-Console the integrated management console of vSpace Server. Depending on installed vSpace
Server version the console can work in Management Server mode or Direct mode.
vSpace Management Center, VMC a device management system containing the Management
Server component, database and a web-based management console.
Management Server core management component, contained in vSpace Server 7.x and vSpace
Management Center, responsible for the management data administration and management
communication between connected devices, servers and management consoles.
Management Serve mode operation mode of the NC-Console in which the console acts as a front-
end for the Management Server. In this mode all NC-Consoles communication with the Access
Devices goes through the Management Server. Only the NC-Console contained in vSpace Server 7.0,
7.1, 8.0 and 8.1 can operate in Management Server mode, which is the default operation mode then.
Direct mode operation mode of the NC-Console when the console directly communicates with the
Access Devices. Direct mode is the default operation mode of NC-Console in vSpace Server 6.6 and
8.2.

Boot Server for Miniterm service one of vSpace Servers system components. The Boot Server for
Miniterm service responds to server auto-discovery requests from vSpace Clients. It is also
responsible for delivering device firmware updates in local area networks.

1.5. How to use this document

The Common tasks section contains general information about frequently performed management
actions.
The Updating the vSpace Server software sub-section contains information about migrating to
vSpace Server 8.2 from any previously released version of the vSpace Server software.
The Migration scenarios section describes the order in which the software and firmware update
actions should be performed, depending on currently installed vSpace Server software and device
firmware versions. Performing the actions in described order is crucial to successful migration.

WARNING: L300 access devices with 1.8 or 1.9 firmware MUST be updated to us
version 1.10 firmware before installing vSpace Server 8.2.
To update the L300 access devices with 1.8 or 1.9 firmware the instructions from
the appropriate sub-sections of the chapter Migration scenariosMigration scenarios
must be strictly followed.

2.4. Updating the vSpace Server software

To perform an update of vSpace Server 6.x or 7.x the existing version must be uninstalled first, only
then ca the 8.2 version can be installed. To preserve the registration data, software license and
device profiles defined on previous version the vSpace Server 8.2 must be installed into the same
folder location where vSpace Server 6.x or 7.x was installed previously. In the case of a vSpace Server
6.x update the location should be: C:\Program Files\NComputing\NComputing vSpace.
vSpace Server versions 8.0 and 8.1 can be directly migrated to vSpace Server 8.2 by installing the 8.2
version on top of the existing 8.0 or 8.1 versions.
Only the above specified versions of vSpace Server software supporting the L- and M-series access
devices can be updated to vSpace Server 8.2. It is not possible to update any vSpace Server software
supporting the X- or U-series products, vSpace Server 4.x, the NCT-2000-XP or NCX-2000-XP software.

2.4.1. Uninstalling the vSpace Server software

1. Open the Control Panel and go to Programs and Features.
2. Select NComputing vSpace on the list and click Uninstall.

3. Click Yes when asked if you are ready to uninstall NComputing vSpace.

4. When uninstalling the vSpace Server software it is possible to retain the registration data
and the vSpace Server software license to use with a new version. A new version of the
vSpace Server software installed on the same machine can then inherit the existing
registration data and software license. Click Yes or No when asked if you want to
retain/delete the vSpace Server software license.

5. The system must be rebooted for the uninstall process to complete. Click Yes to when
asked if you want to restart the system immediately.

2.4.2. Installing vSpace Server 8.2 on a fresh Windows system

Refer to the vSpace Server 8.2 Quick Installation Guide for instructions on how to install the vSpace
Server software on a fresh Windows system.

2.4.3. Performing an update to vSpace Server 8.2 by installing it on top of previous

version
vSpace Server versions 8.0 and 8.1 (and only these versions) can be directly migrated to vSpace
Server 8.2 by installing the 8.2 version on top of the existing 8.0 or 8.1 versions.
Installation of the vSpace Server software on top of a previous version does not differ from
installation on a fresh Windows system. Refer to the vSpace Server 8.2 Quick Installation Guide for
instructions how to perform the installation.

3.1.1. Recommended firmware update methods

To perform a firmware update, an update method that is supported by both the vSpace Server and
the L/M-Series device must be selected. Whenever possible the Direct method should be chosen, as
it does not depend on the existence and operability of any Management Server.
