Seminar on

Earthquake: Design and Management

Date : Wednesday, 7 October 2015
Time : 8.30 am 5.00 pm
Venue : Auditorium, Ultimate Professional Centre, Kuching
A. Introduction on Earthquake/ Knowledge of earthquakes
Earthquakes are defined as a vibration of the earth's surface that occurs after a release of energy in the earth's
crust.
Because the earth's crust is made up of numerous segments or "plates" that are constantly moving slowly,
vibrations can occur and result in small earthquakes. Most earthquakes are quite small but are not readily felt.
Larger and more violent earthquakes are those that occur in a release of energy as the plates slide past or
collide into one another. Refer to figure 1

Figure 1 an image of the worlds plates and their boundaries.

notice that many plate boundaries do not coincide with coastline

We will discuss the basic items of earthquake as followings

Classification and origin of earthquake

Seismic activity
Earthquake wave
Magnitude and intensity

B. Review of the procedure for the seismic design.

There are around 47 codes from the world related to seismic design, and more than 12 code share the same
zone code as note below source from Seismic design code, We will introduce the principle of the design which
most of the code had followed
Seismic conceptual design,
checking,
detail design
1

C. The basic ideas and methods for seismic design of building

Based on the uncertainty of seismic action, the basic characteristics of seismic structure is introduced. Then the
basic contents and methods for seismic design of buildings are described. This part mainly focus on the seismic
checking and details of seismic design. Finally, the similarities and differences between Chinese seismic code
and Eurocode will be discussed.
D. The compilation and application of standard for seismic appraisal of buildings
This part is mainly focus on the compilation and applications of standard for seismic appraisal of buildings.
The corresponding seismic precautionary objectives for the existing building in the continuing seismic
service life, and the choice of continuing seismic service life.
The content and requirements of seismic appraisal.
The basic seismic methods of buildings for different continuing seismic service life.
E. The compilation and application of technical specifications for seismic strengthening of buildings
This talk mainly introduces the compilation and application of technical specification for seismic strengthening
of building. The design principle, the scheme of seismic strengthening, the structure layout and details of
seismic connection, seismic checking method. Finally, several typical strengthening methods are introduced.
