Shamela help

Salaam all,
I just bought a new computer powered by windows7 ultimate version. I downloaded Shamela
and winrar but cannot open the books from the winrar. Does anyone have any tips to help in
opening those books. it seems that I am missing some important step.

Sorry, what are you trying to open? Electronic PDF Books that are compressed into .rar files?

Are you able to open the compressed file with winrar?
If yes, then what message do you get when trying to open the file inside it?
and does that file end with ".bok" or another extension?

Wa alaikum assalam,
I see the files of shamela present under the WinRar but I cannot open from there. It keeps
wanting to archive things. Is it that I need to first extract the files? Do I extract and route to
a folder like C:\e-shamela or something like that. Or should I download BitZipper to open the
files?

So I extracted the files and when I tried to open them they do open though a program called
microsoft access and it comes out in something that looks like an excel file which is useless.
Any advice on that.

Now for Al-Shamela ... I am unsure which version you downloaded, so did you download it as
one big winrar file or many smaller files.
If it is only one file, when you open it ... how many files do you have inside and do they have
any that are .exe extension?

Shukran Akhee,
I believe that I dowloaded it from the islamport site and it was the last version 3.93 or
something like that. I do believe that I downloaded a whole big file and when it shows several
files including one with exe extension.

OK akhee
Now go to that folder which you extracted the big file to, and double-click on that .exe file (it
should say part001.exe or something). That will go through the whole download process for
you.
Now the process can take an hour or so.
If you do not see a part001.exe let me know, if you do go through the process and tell me
how it goes, In Sha Allah (wink)

jazaka Allah khair brother,

I doubled clicked it and it opened the file but I guess that I need to learn how to use it since I
am able to do searches but it does not show anything. Do I need to compress or decompress
files. It shows the names of the books but the searches are not showing anything. Any
advice?

One of two things akhee:

[1] you might just need to select the books directory, so if you can open the program:
* select
* Choose
* Find the directory where you have all the files i.e. the folder that contains the bin, books,
files, and indices ...
* Once you find it, select the folder and click
Now see if you can open the books.
[2] If that doesn't work then maybe I will need to get some print screens from you, or maybe
let you tell me the name of the files in the main winrar file you downloaded?
But In Sha Allah the first will work (smile)

Right now I am still in the process of indexing (Fahrasa) of the books. the process is taking a
long time, as expected. I am wondering if the search did not work because I did not do the
indexing first. Once finished, I will report back to you.

Salaam again,
When I finished the indexing but still cannot open the books or get results from the search
function. I also did the exercise that you told me and it still did not work. The WinRar window
has

Just for followup. I discovered that my version was not the most updated version. When I
updated to the 3.42 version it worked perfectly. Jazakum Allah khair to all for your help

does anyone know, if i download a .bok file, can i put it in my maktaba shamela, so that i can
open it with shamela with the rest of the other e-books? if yes, how can i insert it into
shamela?

Open Al-Shamela
Click on the " " icon (it is to the right of the pencil icon) ... or click Ctrl+I
You should see three screens
On the top left one, select the directory where the .bok, .doc, etc book is at
Once you selected the directory, you should see the book in the top right window
Drag it to the bottom window

[7] On the top left corner of that bottom window you will see the categories of the Shamela.
So select aqeedah, fiqh, hadeeth, etc ... whichever applies most to the book (you can also
create your own category - but that is from somewhere else)
[8] After you are happy ... click the "thunderbolt" looking icon on the right side of the bottom
window
[9] Wait
[10] Now you are done
Note: that You can import more than one book at the same time

I have purchased a computer with Windows 7 pre installed when i installed Shamela its giving
weard characters in the menu column.
Can any one help me with this?

What version of windows 7 you have installed? If it is ultimate then you just need to Arabize
every thing, the keyboard, the unicode and so on. It should work. However, if it is something
else then my expertise is limited.
