STATISTICS - SEMINAR 3

GROUPING STATISTICAL DATA

1. A real estate agency, located in the central area of a town, intends to open a new office in a
peripheral area. In order to study the geographical distribution of the apartments sold by the agency,
a researcher randomly selects 30 apartments sold last month. Each apartment is located in one of the
following areas: North-West (NW), North-East (NE), South-West (SW) and South-East (SE). The
data are presented in the following table:

a. Identify the population, the sample, the statistical unit and the variable. Describe the variable and
identify its measurement scale.
b. Group the available data and graph the results.
c. Determine the percentage of apartments located in each area and plot the results.

a. Identify the population, the sample, the statistical unit and the variable. Describe the variable and
identify its measurement scale.
b. Group the available data and graph the results.
c. Determine the relative frequencies and the cumulative frequencies and construct the relative
frequency distribution and the cumulative frequency distributions. Interpret the values corresponding
to the 4th class.

a. Group the available data into equal class-intervals; graph the results.
b. Determine and plot the relative frequencies. Interpret the value for the second class.
c. Determine and plot the cumulative frequencies (ascending and descending). Interpret the values for
the 5th class.
d. Compute mid-points for the determined class-intervals.
Observation: use Excel tools for grouping the data.
4. The length of time it takes to assemble a particular electronic component varies from an employee to
another. Management has collected the time (in minutes) it took 20 different employees to assemble
the component. The information is summarized in the following frequency distributions generated by

a. Find the missing values.
b. Which of the following statements is true:
1. It took 50% of all workers exactly 15 minutes to assemble the component.
2. It took 100% of all workers longer than 25 minutes to assemble the component.
3. 11 workers assembled the component in 20 minutes or less.
4. It took 7 workers 25 minutes or longer to assemble the component.
