MARKING GUIDANCE
1.1 Explain the values and processes of community development.
The values of community development are rooted in the action of individuals
and groups/ organisations coming together to share experience, learn from
each other and develop their skills, knowledge and confidence.
Activities undertaken should demonstrate a value base that is aimed to effect
change, eg a demonstration to provide affordable childcare in the
neighbourhood. Community development values can include:
1.2 Analyse how these values and processes are applied within
organisations and communities.
The analysis should break down this topic into its separate parts and examine
each part in turn, showing how the main ideas are related and how they are
important.
The candidates response should show how the application of the community
development values and processes have developed the community in a
specific way, eg mechanisms (who, why, when, where and how) to check that
the actions were following the value base such as planning, projections and
reports showing that accountable decision making had taken place before the
development of the neighbourhood childrens centre was located in a
particular location/ ward.
Candidates may compare this with activities where the values and accepted
methods of working are not applied and consider the difference for the
community as a whole.
1.3 Evaluate the activities of a community project of your choice
against the values, purposes and processes of community
development.
The evaluation should review evidence from different sources/ perspectives
and come to a valid conclusion or judgement.
This should clearly show the links with the purpose and processes of
community development, eg the open meeting was attended by householders
from the estate, all were asked to share their personal needs for childcare,
their skills and experience for providing support for the childcare facility and
their willingness to provide support from this action came a dedicated
committee for the first playgroup on the estate.
Any area of community development activities can be used as examples.
