dedicated to Lance Cpl. Michael Glover who died while
serving with the US Marines in
August, 2006. Glover, who was
born in St. Francis de Sales
parish, joined the service after
9/11. In a letter from Iraq, he

wrote: I took an oath and

its the best oath I ever took.
Im at peace if I come back
with parts of me missing. And
Im at peace if I dont come
back at all. Previously, Beach
134th Street in Belle Harbor
was renamed in his honor.

Weekend Forecast: Green With Rainbows

IRISH FESTIVAL AT ST. CAMILLUS
By Katie McFadden

St. Patricks Day may be

behind us, but theres never
a bad time to celebrate Irish
culture in a place that was
once called the Irish Riviera.
The Ancient Order of Hibernians Division 21s 4th Annual Rockaway Beach/ Breezy
Point Irish Festival will celebrate with a whole weekend
of Irish music, dance, food
and goods.
On Saturday, June 4 and
Sunday, June 5, from 11 a.m.
to 8 p.m. all are invited to enjoy some festive fun in the
parking lot of St. Camillus
Church (Beach 100th and
Shore Front Parkway). In
2013, the AOH revived the
old Rockaway tradition of
the Irish Festival, bringing
it back as a family-friendly
event, which has grown successfully over the years. Last
years Irish Festival was a big

hit as the AOH sold out of all

5,000 event bracelets on the
first day. Festival Chairperson John Manning says the
event has become the largest Irish festival in New York
City.
Manning says its important continue this tradition
and give the community another way to come together

for something positive. We

live in a very Irish community and its important to keep
the traditions of our heritage
alive and its nice to see the
community come out for this
whether youre from Rockaway, Breezy or Broad Channel, he said. Another important aspect of the festival is
that its a major fundraiser

for the community. Manning

says that so far, the AOH has
raised $103,000 from the festival, which goes back to the
community. The AOH has
donated much of the money
to churches like St. Camillus,
St. Rose, St. Francis de Sales,
Blessed Trinity in Breezy
Point and organizations like
the Breezy Point Catholic
Club, the Knights of Columbus and more.
One of the major highlights
of the Irish Festival is the variety of Irish music. Saturdays
lineup starts with the Brooklyn Bards at 12 p.m., followed by Jamesons Revenge
at 2 p.m, the all female rock
band, Screaming Orphans
at 4 p.m. and the night will
finish off with the ever-popular Shilelagh Law at 6 p.m.
The great tunes will continue
on Sunday with Andy Coon-

Headaches
I could write the opposite of the
column Be Well, Be Happy. Feel
Pain, Be Cranky, I could knock that
off in my sleep. Not that I get any
sleep shoulder pain keeps waking
me the hell up. Still, its an idea for a
new column Theres not that much
difference between the chants at
yoga class and the sounds I make
getting in and out of a chair. They say
mmmmmmm..and I say uuhhhhhhhoooooouhhhh. Same stuff.
Anyway, last week I bored you
with a quacky diagnosis that your

pain is in your head. You might

have bulging disks and pinched
nerves but the pain is really just a
manifestation of the stress and tension in your life. Some of you say
hooey but I know there were people who read the column and giftwrapped it for their complaining
spouse to see.
It was like that old TV commercial
where bottles of Scope mouthwash
would be left anonymously so people with death breath would catch
a hint. The Rockaway Times just

Page 5

happened to be open to Boyleing

Points and left on the pillow of people in pain. God knows, I wouldnt
recommend that. Telling a significant other to read this column is no
way to reduce stress. Its like telling
someone to calm down. How often
does that work?
But heres the real question pain
sufferers should ask: what happened to stomach ulcers? Huh?
Yeah, remember people used to get
ulcers all the time? Youd see grown
men swigging milk straight from
the carton.
People started to realize ulcers
were stress related. And then it
almost became a saying, Im not
gonna give myself an ulcer. And
it worked! People stopped giving
themselves ulcers.
But stress and tension being devious little critters didnt just quit
and go away. They left the stomach
and headed for the back and shoulders. Think about it. When men
were men, when they were building this country and breaking their
backs they werent complaining
about backs! They had ulcers but
no back pain.
And these days, with women
having many of the same jobs as

men, back and shoulder pain is an

equal opportunity bastard.
And the thing about stress it
causes more stress. Bastard. You
wake up and the first thing you
think about is your pain. Your day
starts with the stress of how youre
feeling never mind what caused
your stress in the first place. Its all
connected and youre dead unless
you start to realize it.
The worst thing is, I KNOW its in
my head and I cant get cured. Yet.
Some fellow quacks theorize that
we only start to feel better when the
mind tells us weve suffered enough!
Were like Job in the bible. You
have it too good so heres some
pain to remind you that youre not
all that.
Like I said, I cant get rid of this
shoulder pain because theres
some doubt that says, maybe its
not in my head. That doubt, of
course, is part of the whole head
thing but its tough to get past.
Im reminded of my favorite epitaph: A guy who was known as a
hypochondriac and was always
complaining didnt want to hear
about it being in his head. The
words on his tombstone: Now Do
You Believe Me?

Breezy Point resident Thomas

Frerks was named an Eagle Scout
after completing an important
service project of clearing the
sidewalk along the main road to
Breezy Point.
In late February, Frerks, of the
Boy Scouts of America Troop 76,
launched a project to take on
the task of creating a safe 1.67mile pathway from Beach 169th
to Reid Avenue. The pathway
had been severely damaged after Sandy and was abandoned,
leaving garbage and overgrowing
plants to take over. Frerks set out to
make this path safe once again so
students could walk home safely.
Frerks worked in conjunction with
Assemblyman Phil Goldfeders office and enlisted a few volunteers
to help complete the project on a
brisk February day.
After completing the task,
Frerks was named an Eagle
Scout at the end of April. Eagle
Scout is the highest rank attainable in the Boy Scouts program.
On May 7, BSA Troop 76 held a

Court of Honor at St. Bernards

Roman Catholic Church to recognize Frerks. During the ceremony, Frerks was presented
with a Proclamation from Goldfeders office, plus congratulatory letters from Pope Francis,
President Obama and First Lady
Michelle Obama, and E. Gordon
Gee, President of West Virginia
University where Thomas Frerks
currently attends. He also received a check and a plaque from
Frank Romano of the Knights of
Columbus, along with an invitation to join the group.

Fort Tilden Adding

Some Color
MOMA PS1 PRESENTS ROCKAWAY!

From Klaus Biesenbach on Instagram

The former army base, Fort

Tilden, is taking a turn as a
canvas.
Its been three years since
MoMA PS1s VW Dome 2
brought a much needed a distraction to a battered community. It was art intervening
with life by providing performances, dance, yoga, gardening classes, instruction in art
and ecology, and a screening
of a film. That led to Rockaway!
in summer of 2014, primarily
at Fort Tilden, which featured
solo projects by Patti Smith,
Adrin Villar Rojas, and Janet
Cardiff as well as a group show
at the Rockaway Beach Surf
Club.
The first go-around of Rockaway! proved to be a huge success as big crowds visited the
park throughout its 2014 summer run. Now, in another nod
to rebirth, a building in Fort

Tilden damaged by Hurricane

Sandy and long in decay will
become art and Rockaway! is
likely to draw crowds from far
and wide.
MoMA PS1 is back on the
peninsula with a special outdoor exhibit by artist Katharina Grosse. In a press release
from MoMA PS1, Grosse is
acclaimed for exploring the
medium of painting in regards
to its locations, conditions and
possibilities. Through this temporary public art installation,
Grosse turns Fort Tildens decaying aquatics building into a
sublimely exhilarating exterior
painting with her unique spray
painting technique.
The exhibition starts its near
four-month run on the July 4th
Weekend, ending on Thanksgiving, 2016. The event is free

The Rockaway Times

COMPASS

By Lou Pastina

As a kid I always thought

looking out from the beach
that I was staring at Europe. It
seemed natural to think that
looking out across the water my gaze would eventually
end on the shores of Spain,
France, England or Ireland.
The water is east, right. Well,
it took me 33 years of living
in Rockaway to figure out
what the natives have always
known: looking out over the
water is south. You see Rockaway juts out almost parallel to
Long Island and a bit perpendicular to the mainland, and
points south of all places.
This means that facing the
water is south and turning
to the right will allow you to
watch the sun set because
to the right is west. Now the
tough part about this means

that if you turn to the left

facing the water you will be
facing east of all places and
that will eventually get you to
Europe. Kind of makes sense
because if you have ever seen
the sun rise in Rockaway, you
know it rises to your left facing the beach. You know this
because you are either an
early riser, or sometimes you
wake up on the beach after
a good night! If its Canada
youre interested in, then face
away from the beach and look
toward the bay. Thats north,
confusing right?
I still havent figured out
whether a Noreaster means
that the storm is coming from
the northeast towards us;
or, its coming from the west
heading toward the northeast. I figure I have about 25
more years to figure that one
out.

Phones and cars have GPS

now and can tell us all this;
you dont really need a compass anymore. But they are
fun to play with, and are helpful when youre lost in a forest
and you left your cell phone
recharging somewhere. It
would be great if any of these
devices could help with our
moral compass too. Wouldnt
it be awesome to simply look
at your phone when faced
with a moral dilemma and
have it point toward the right
answer, the right thing to do?
Those directions are even
harder to fathom than which
way is south at the shore.
They sometimes take a lifetime to learn. We go to school
and learn the lessons of the
great masters in philosophy;
and we are born into the religions of our parents, teaching
us right from wrong. But like

looking out from the shore,

sometimes its hard to figure
out which way is which.
There are some simple
rules, just like looking for the
North Star to navigate from:
be kind to others, treat everyone with respect, and dont
be mean. I am fond of paraphrasing a saying that hangs
in the mermaids yoga school:
many paths, one truth. Meaning no matter what religion or
philosophy you ascribe to, the
North Star is always north.
So know the simplest rules
are the best. You dont need
an iPhone to tell you to be
i-nice, just treat people the
way you want to be treated
and it will all work out. Now
I wonder, is it true what we
learned as kids, that if we dig
a hole in the sand at the beach
we would reach China? I better Google that one.

Will Someone Sue Over Sewer?

Dylan Watton may have

moved on from his regular reporting for The Rockaway Times
but hes still got an eye out for
the public good and sent us
this: This sewer on the corner of
Rockaway Beach Boulevard and
Beach 108th Street has been in
this condition--open and broken--since JANUARY. Furthermore it is one of several on RBB

between 108th Street and 104th

Street in some state of disrepair.
The one pictured is of particular
concern because it both at a bus
stop and outside of a busy store
(Rite Aid). Will the city wait until someone falls and sues them
until they fix it? Or will they simply continue to give residents of
the block a lovely peek at what
sewer water looks like?

the aquatics building will be

part of its Hurricane Sandy recovery program.
Rockaway! is organized in
collaboration with the Rockaway Artists Alliance (RAA),
Jamaica Bay-Rockaway Parks
Conservancy, National Park
Service, Central Park Conservancy, NYC Parks & Recreation and Rockaway Beach
Surf Club. Rockaway! 2016 is a
continuation MoMA PS1s ongoing collaborative programming alongside the Rockaway
Artists Alliance in the Rockaways that began with the VW
Dome 2 erected in the wake of
Hurricane Sandy in 2013.
If you are not familiar with
MoMA PS1, it is one of the
largest art institutions in the
United States dedicated solely to contemporary art. The
Queens based organization
has its headquarters in Long

Island City and was founded in
1971 with the mission of turning abandoned, underutilized
buildings in New York City into
artist studios and exhibition
spaces. MoMA PS1 and The Museum of Modern Art formalized
their affiliation in January 2000,
bringing together a leader in
cutting-edge art and the worlds
foremost museum of modern
art. Under the leadership of Director Klaus Biesenbach, the
principal objective is to promote the enjoyment, appreciation, study, and understanding
of contemporary art to a wide
and growing audience.
Biesenbach notes the following on Instagram one of
the most iconic buildings in
the Rockaways are the former
aquatics in Fort Tilden. Built
when the fort was a military
base they have been abandoned for many years and they
were already more or less a tear
down before Hurricane Sandy.
In autumn they will make way
for restoring the natural beach
habitat and vegetation in one
of New York Citys most unique
inner city nature reserves di-

rectly on the Atlantic Ocean.

Protective dunes and vegetation will be there where the
ruins are now. Nature wins...
but I will visit these buildings
many times this summer before theyre gone.
Biesenbach, who has a house
in the Rockaways, recently
told the NY Times Heres a
very beautiful found object. It
has history as being a military
fortress, as being ecologically
changed because of the hurricane. Now its being restored
to its natural habitat.
The RAA has developed
a special relationship with
MoMA which began after
Sandy. Essentially homeless
after the storm, the Dome
allowed the RAA to continue
their workshops and monthly meetings as well as establish a relationship with Klaus
Biesenbach. The relationship with MoMA helps the
RAA to achieve its mission of
bringing Manhattan-caliber
shows and exhibits to Rockaway residents along with
nurturing local talent, RAA
Education Director Christine

Page 13
Mullally said. It is a wonderful mix of international
and local talent. The RAAs
contribution to Rockaway! is
the Forbidden Fruit exhibit
which begins on July 7 at the
T7 building and the garden
behind it.
The third part of Rockaway!
will be presented by The Rockaway Beach Surf Club. The details of which were unavailable
at press time but will be provided in future editions of The
Rockaway Times.
Fort Tilden (169 State Road)
is accessible by the Q22 and
Q35 buses, the A train/shuttle
to 116th St. and weekend ferry
service on the American Princess. Parking is available at adjacent Riis Park. The Rockaway
Beach Surf Club (302 Beach
87th Street) is on the A train/
shuttle to Beach 90th Street;
bus service includes the Q22
and Q52. Parking is limited
to on-street. The ferry service

In Touch With Tech

GRILLING WITH YOUR SMARTPHONE
By Pat Morgan

The outdoor grill has been fired

up since Memorial Day, perhaps
even before. But, you already had
your fill of pedestrian burgers and
dogs to kick off your summer season. Now what do you do?
You can stay the course. Or
you can kick it up a notch by discovering new and exciting recipes from apps available for your
smart device. Recipe apps are
essentially cookbooks on your
smartphone that can display ingredients, step-by-step instructions, grocery lists, videos, and
menu suggestions by event.
My favorite is Epicurious. It features recipes from Bon Appetit
and Gourmet magazines as well
as numerous cookbooks. The free
app is available on iOS (Apple),
Android and Windows devices
and can be downloaded from
the respective app store. (Warning: Epicurious will try to get you
to sign up so you can store your
recipes as well as present occasional pop-up ads encouraging

you to subscribe to their magazine versions). The app is packed

with free features and more than
35,000 high-quality recipes.
Home cooks have downloaded this award-winning program
from the App Store more than
10 million times since it opened.
The recipes are also available on
their website epicurious.com.
Are you just looking for ideas?
The home page presents the option for you to browse by category
which currently features summer
groupings that include desserts,
dinners, brunch and salads. Trying to eat smarter? Then look for
recipes in the low-calorie, lowcarb, or low-fat mains selections.
The app also has a search function that allows you to browse
recipes by various categories. Got
home late? Try the Quick & Easy
option. Dont know what to cook
for the kids or grandkids? Select
the Kid Friendly icon. Trying to eat
healthy? Click on Healthy Food.
The app also provides additional categories by Main Ingredient,
Meal/Course, Cuisine, Dish Type,

Dietary Consideration and Season/Occasion. When you click

on them, you will see additional
search options that will help you
narrow down choices from recipes in their vast library.
How would you replicate the
Shake Shack Burger? There is a
recipe for that, which tells you
to use a little brisket in the mix,
freeze the patties for 15 minutes
before cooking and use two large
griddle spatulas to smash them
flat against the hottest grill possible. How about a nice healthy
side dish like Spanish-style
grilled vegetables with breadcrumb picada? Or for dessert
grilled rum-basted pineapple
with sorbet? You are bound to
find something inspiring.
With the app, you can also:
Store your favorite recipes
across all your devices with the
recipe box and shopping list features.
Discover what vegetables
are fresh and in-season with
the Seasonal Ingredient Finder
(which uses your location).

Go hands-free in the kitchen

or at the grill, using their voice to
control the app with Cook Mode.
Browse inspired recipe collections that update as the seasons
change and holidays approach.
Another favorite of mine is the
free NY Times Cooking app. It
contains more than 17,000 recipes from the publication that
feature professional photographs
and easy-to-follow instructions.
The rest of this apps functionality, as well as similar recipe apps,
is pretty much the same.
Maybe these two apps arent
for you? There are plenty of other
acclaimed options to choose from
such as BigOven, Sidechef, Allrecipes, Yummly, Webers on the Grill
and Food Network In The Kitchen.
There is also an app specifically for
Vegetarians called Garden Plate.
Now put on your grilling apron
with the pithy saying on the front
and grill with confidence! And remember what Lady Godiva said
about grilling Always wear something sensible when cooking at the
barbecue.

Rockaway knows how to do a

dress up. Models rocked clothing and accessories from about
a dozen local retail businesses as they strutted their stuff
down the runway at the Community House on Wednesday,
May 25 at the first ever Rockaway Beach Fashion Night,
which was a big success.
The event was organized

by gift shop owner Lola Star

and Jimmy Dowd of St. James
Clothing and Boarders, who
guest bartended during the
event. Illusionist Adam Cardone announced each model
and business as they walked
the runway while DJ Paddy
Tubz spun some fun tunes
and ended the night with a
dance party. The evening included clothing and accessories by longtime brands
such as Boarders, Blue Bungalow, St. James and Lanas
Loft, newer stores like End of
the A and Polly & Esther, and
brand new shops like The
Swellife truck which made its
debut during the event, NiLu
Kids which shared its cute
kids costumes and U.S. Surf
& Surplus which showed off
its military-inspired gear. The
event was held to give retail
business a chance in the spotlight and to let the community know that you dont need to
leave the peninsula to shop.
The evening was a big hit and

In Defense Of
Dock Naming
Dear Editor,
(In response to the Ferry Sensible letter of 5/19/2016) First
we would like to thank Susie
Juszczak for her acknowledging
the significance of obtaining
over 1,600 signatures for DECKELMANS LANDING. Although
she neglected to mention the
hundreds of heartfelt comments
by those who fell strongly for
DECKELMANS LANDING. We
will correct her numbers, there
are 130,000 140,000 residents
on the Rockaway Peninsula. Any
resident that has ever used a petition for any worthy endeavor

THURSDAY, JUNE 2, 2016

will attest to the fact that no one
will ever get a majority of Rockaway residents to sign any petition. We firmly disagree with
the naming of our dock to be
a minor issue. Hopefully the
Rockaway Ferry will sail into
Rockaway in 2017 and will last
indefinitely, as will its name.
Long after Laura Deckelman is
no longer with us.
To accept the true reality of
how the ferry arrived in Rockaway would be to recognize
Super Storm (Sandy) is what
bought it to our shores. For many
years Rockaway desired a ferry;
however NO ONE was able to
accomplish this desire. We also
believe if not for Lauras day to
day work in promoting the ferry
we would have not been on the
list to have a permanent ferry
stop in Rockaway. Frankly personalities have no bearing on
our starting and continuing the
petition, nor did Laura have any
idea we would do so.
Yes, we will acknowledge
others also put time and effort
into keeping the Ferry once it
arrived, including Danny and
I but NO ONE only Laura rode

The Rockaway Times

the ferry every day come rain,

snow etc., along with taking
her exceptional photographs
which made many aware of
her devotion to Rockaway and
our Ferry, including City Hall,
which is instrumental in our
cause. There are many heroes
throughout our City and we are
certain there has been and will
continue to be ways to honor
them. We feel strongly it is time
for a Rockaway resident to be
honored and acknowledged
for all her constant daily work,
letter writing attending meetings, etc. a vibrant woman and
a team player who will continue to ride our ferry along with
her beautiful photography.
Once again thanks to the twelve
Elected Officials who signed
our petition. They along with us
are very aware; to get anything
done in the City of New York you
need to begin way in advance. I
will admit I do find the idea of
an open forum rather amusing. Ideas are often simple and
well intentioned; however the
actuality of working such an idea
is not. For instance who, when,
where, how, along with who will

organize, send out notices and

who will run the meeting? The
process of a petition could have
been utilized by anyone who
would have been willing to put
their effort, time and energy into
doing so.

Hello Rockaway Times:

My name is Hitomi, I recently moved to US from Japan few
months ago, and I am so lucky
to live in Rockaway as the first
place in the US. When I got here,
I knew absolutely nothing that
was around, and had no friends
in Rockaway, just my husband.
So I start reading Rockaway
Times from cover to cover to
gather information, and now
I know Rockaway much more
than my husband even though
he grew up here!
A few weeks ago, I found the
article about the Fashion show,
and sent an email to the organizer and asked if its possible to

be part of this event as model.
The article said it was the first
local fashion night and that it
would be at Community House.
I contacted the organizer and
Lola Star responded to me right
away, and took me as a model. I
was so excited for the event.
The event was on Wednesday although so many guests
at Community House, plenty
beautiful local clothes around,
cute kids model, and all the
guests were heated up with
good drink and music!
I certainly enjoyed the stage
very much!
I had chance to try on variety of clothes, start from USSS
clothes, and beautiful other
clothes line Polly and Esther,
Blue Bungalow, and Lanas Loft.
In short time of the stage, I had
to change clothes one after another. Back stage was crazy as
the show, but I had absolutely
great time and now I know community even more.
The more I know Rockaway,
love to be here more and I dont
miss home at all!

I would like to say huge thanks.

Whos Watching
The Store

Dear Editor:
In some ways, technology is
eroding the customer service
skills of people that work in retail. For some reason, many
salespeople walk around the
store looking at their hand-held
computer, and never approach
you to see if you may need assistance. Also, many salespeople
are not educated on the products they are selling. It seems
that there is very little supervision of employees at large retail
stores. I will not bore you with
the too-numerous to mention,
examples of poor customer service that I have experienced. I
am sure you have your own!!.
Shopping Local is so much
more stress-free and satisfying
and of course there is on-line.

In 1982, Universal Studios

Not only did they lose, but
the court found a King Kong

was actually in violation of
Nintendo's copyrights.
To punish tree thieves who

is odorless outdoors, but
would stink up your whole
house if brought indoors. The
smell is "eye-watering".

And So It Begins Chaos

It was a great event last
Friday, as they had one of
numerous beach opening
ceremonies across the city.
Everyone smiling and even
some
self-congratulatory
back-patting going around, but
none of this ever hinted at the
annual and somewhat comical
confusion of the Parks Dept.
PEP officers behavior. I seriously question how so many
of the staff just cannot be on

the same page. Surely they all

meet in the same room to get
advised on protocol and the
ACTUAL rules of the beach.
Not only was it recorded
with the Parks Dept. trucks
and ATVs weaving through
sun bathers on the sand, our
kids were repeatedly harassed
by one officer because they
had boogie boards on the
surfing beach; another one
was OK letting people go in.

Not to mention our 10-14 year

old kids getting ordered out of
the water in the surfing beach
when they werent even ankle deep; another officer was
quite OK with 3-4 year olds
doing much worse, God forbid they were thigh deep!
I thought this whole boogie board debacle was put to
rest, with the statement that it
is up to the lifeguards to determine, on the day, if they
can be used and where. One
lifeguard friend of mine said
that they made no decision
that day and they should be
allowed everywhere. Hmmfff!
Confusion reigns again.
Sometimes you just have
to let it all happen in front of
you, let it fall apart and not
worry how the pieces fall. And
all the time I see these events
unfold. I occasionally come
back to one of my favorite,
and ultimately true stories
that Ive only shared with a
few people.
Two years before Sandy a
PEP officer approached me
about settling a debate she
was having with a co-worker,

The Rockaway Times

it went like this:
Her: Yo! Mister! Ive got to
ask you, since you go all the
way the hell out there on that
stand up thing, so far sometimes I cant even see you.
Youre surely the one to know
what the hell that is over
there. (She says as she waves
her finger in the direction to
the land mass west of us)
Me: What? That over there?
(As I too point my finger).
Her: Yeah! That over there!
Is that England or South
America?
After a few gasps for air I
take to settle myself.
Me: That? Over there? Thats
New Jersey.
Her: GTF outta here!!!! New
Jersey???
Me: Yep!

WEEKEND FORECAST

Continued from Page 3

ey and His Band starting the

day off at 12 p.m., followed
by the Cunningham Brothers
at 2 p.m., The Narrowbacks
at 4 p.m. and McLean Avenue at 6 p.m. There will also
be performances throughout
the weekend by the OMalley Irish Dance Academy, the
Breezy Point Catholic Club
Pipes and Drums band and
the AOH Division 7 Pipe Band
from Massapequa.
As opposed to past years,
the AOH will be running both
tents at this weekends event
where food and beverages
will be available for purchase.
Theyll have snacks like
corned beef, hamburgers and
hot dogs from Ludwigs Catering. This years beer sponsors include Anheuser-Busch
and Guinness. Manning says
that due to the festivals success, the beer companies actually reached out to the organizers this year. When we
first started this festival, they
didnt think it would become
what it has become and this
year they reached out to us to
be the beverages of choice for
the event, he said.
This years festival will
have a record 25 vendors
selling Irish goods like jewelry, clothing, handbags and
more. Many of the vendors
will accept credit cards, but
Ridgewood Savings Bank
will be on-site with a mobile
ATM. A unique vendor has
also been invited this year.
In keeping with the mission
of celebrating Irish heritage,
Ancestry.com will be on site
to help guide those who are
curious about their own heritage. We reached out to Ancestry this year. We felt a lot
of people dont know their
history or where their family
came from so we approached
them and theyll be here and
theyre even reaching out to
other cultural festivals now
because they thought it was
a good idea, Manning said.
Wanting to break away from
the bad reputation of Rockaways old Irish Festival held
around Beach 108th, the AOH
prides itself on not having
any negative situations take
place during the event. The

The Rockaway Times

new Irish Festival is a fun day
for the whole family, including kids. General admission
is $10, but kids under 12 are
free. There are also bouncy
castles and other rides plus
free face painting to keep the
wee ones entertained.
The
annual
Rockaway
Beach/ Breezy Point Irish
Festival is made possible by
AOH Division 21. Manning
says all of his brother Hibernians help with the event in
some way as it takes plenty
of time and money to plan
and it has brought them
even closer. Our motto is
Friendship, Unity and Christian Charity, and you see all
of that throughout the festival, Manning said. Fellow
Hibernians will join for the
event including those from
other divisions and even Tim
McSweeney, president of the
NYS Board of AOH, will pay
a visit. AOH Division 21 has
160 members, making it the
second largest in the state.
New members are always
welcome. A member must be
a male, at least 16-years-old
and a Roman Catholic with
Irish heritage. Applications
and more info can be found
at www.aohrbny21.org or at
the AOHs recruitment tent at
the festival.
Coolers and beach chairs
will not be welcome but there
will be some seating available. The event is rain or shine.
As we go to press, Saturday
calls for a partly cloudy day
in the high 70s and a chance
of rain on Sunday. The event
will be relocated into the gym
of St. Camillus if the weather
doesnt cooperate.
No matter the weather, the
festival is going to create
a great atmosphere for all.
Come enjoy the company,
enjoy the bands and come
out for a great day with your
family and friends. What else
can you ask for? Manning
said. As the AOH plans on
keeping the festival as an ongoing tradition, dates have
already been set for next
years event. It will be held
on June 3 and June 4, 2017.

Ask the
DOC

By Peter Galvin, MD

By Peter Galvin, MD

As you are most likely aware,

there is an epidemic of obesity
in this country. There are no
magic bullets to cure obesity.
The two-pronged approach to
lessen obesity is based on diet
and exercise. Although exercise is probably less effective
than diet in reducing weight,
most experts agree that adding exercise to a diet program
will increase weight loss. Exercise has additional benefits of
lowering blood pressure, improving lipid levels, improving
insulin sensitivity and lowering blood sugar.
Increasing energy expenditure by exercising can mobilize
and burn fat, thereby reducing
weight. Typically, without any

change in caloric intake, 60

minutes of low intensity exercise most days of the week will
remove about half a pound of
fat per week. There are different kinds of exercise aerobic
(swimming, walking, bicycle
riding), resistance (weight
lifting), flexibility (stretching and yoga) and balance.
Aerobic exercise is usually
the foundation of an exercise
program but the other types
of exercise are important as
well. For obese persons, light
to moderate aerobic exercise is preferred and longer
duration is also preferred
(up to 60 minutes per day).
Light-moderate exercise will
raise the heart rate and induce sweating but the person
should still be able to carry

Page 29

on a conversation. Beginners
should start low and go slow
in order to avoid dropout,
muscle pains and aches and
joint injury.
Progressive resistance exercises also promote favorable
energy balance and weight
loss but the key is to start with
minimal amounts of weight.
Gym
newcomers
should
spend a few sessions with a
personal trainer to become
familiar with the equipment.
Resistance exercise should
be done on non-consecutive
days to allow for muscle remodeling and to prevent excessive soreness. Yoga is the
prototype of flexibility exercise and many find it helpful
to join a yoga class. Balance
exercise does not require
equipment and can be static balancing on one foot for
at least 15 seconds or dynamic repeatedly standing
up and sitting down without
using hands for support. Balance exercise can include
equipment like balance discs
or wedges, wobble and rocker
boards and Indo boards.

A comprehensive weightloss program should include

diet plus all four forms of exercise. The exercise part requires a time commitment,
usually up to an hour a day
(although initially it should
be only about 10 minutes a
day), but the benefits are multiple and include improved
self-image. People do not become obese overnight. Likewise weight loss takes time
if done in a healthy manner.
SMART goals should be set
Specific, Measureable, Attainable, Realistic and Timely in
order to sustain the required
self-discipline.
Always see your doctor before starting an exercise or
weight loss program. Your
doctor can help you design
and plan both your diet and
exercise regimen while ensuring that it will be safe as well
as effective for you. Remember, you will be planning a
strategy for staying healthy for
many years to come.

TAKING BACK OUR BEACH AND BOARDWALK
One Silly Rule At A Time
By Rick Horan

Well
another
Memorial
Day weekend is in the history books. It was kicked off on
Friday at the official beach
opening with the usual cast of
characters. Despite the stunning weather the opening
wasnt as much of a celebration as it could have been due
to the unfinished boardwalk,
restricted access and closed
beaches from Beach 108th to
126th Street. Perhaps this is
why Mitchell Silver showed
up to this years ceremony instead of Bill de Blasio.
There was some good news
however. The Parks Department made two announcements regarding rule changes
that should make this summer season more enjoyable.
Effective
immediately,
people are now able to ride

their bikes on the boardwalk

on weekends and holidays.
Hooray!
There are signs
asking riders to dismount in
the concession areas which
makes sense, especially when
they are crowded. Maybe
when the concessions are rebuilt there will be some accommodation for some sort
of bypass.
Currently the boardwalk is
shut down from 10 PM to 6
AM every day. Maybe at one
time this rule made sense but
now that we are faced with the
choice of walking or biking on
a new $200+ million boardwalk or roads decimated by
DOT, we need the legal use of
this boardwalk 24/7. There
are other laws to deal with
people who misbehave on the
boardwalk at any hour.
Parks other big announcement was the partial rolling

back of kayaking restrictions,

which had essentially made
the Atlantic Ocean completely off limits to these boats.
Two years ago the New York
State Health Department
determined that kayaking
should be treated the same
as fishing, scuba diving and
surfboarding.
This meant
that kayaks can be launched
from bathing beaches during
non-bathing hours (before 10
AM and after 6 PM) and from
non-bathing beaches at any
time. (note: kayaks can land
on any beach at any time.) For
some reason however, NYC
Parks never changed their
rules to comply with the NYS
Health Code.
On Friday Commissioner
Silver announced the formation of two dedicated kayaking beaches on Beach 32nd
St. and Beach 57th St. as well

T+|
e |

as launching privileges from

bathing beaches before 10
AM. For reasons unknown,
Parks continues to deny kayakers legal access into the
ocean after 6 PM on bathing
beaches and from non-bathing beaches at any time.
Kayakers in Rockaway and
on other city beaches have
waited long enough. Community Board 14 recently voted unanimously to ask the
City to follow the State Health
Code as written. Parks contends that it will be confusing to swimmers who are being chased out of the water if
kayakers are allowed to go in.
Im pretty sure people can figure it out.
The Parks Dept. should be
commended for this progress
in revising its archaic bike and
kayak restrictions. Lets not
stop now!

The Swellife:
Rockaways Latest Fashion Truck
By Katie McFadden

Something swell has hit the

road. The Swellife, a brand
new fashion and lifestyle mobile boutique launched over
the holiday weekend.
Mobile fashion boutiques
have become trendy in recent
years, even around Rockaway.
End of the A started the trend
locally when it launched in
the summer of 2014. Now
Katie Long of Rockaway Park
has jumped on the bandwagon with her first fashion
truck. She made her debut
at the Rockaway Beach Fashion Night at the Community
House on Wednesday, May
25 and held a grand opening in front of Playland Motel
over Memorial Day weekend,
which was a big hit.
The Swellife truck may
appear bare bones on the
outside, but as soon as you
walk up the staircase, youre

transported into a cute boutique, complete with flamingo-printed walls, a skylight

and even a fitting room, that
makes you quickly forget
that its on four wheels. Long
calls The Swellife a womens fashion, accessories and
beachgear store, as youll
find comfy shirts, tank tops,
dresses, towels, sandals, hats,
jewelry and even Blue Bottle
Iced Coffee. The store carries American-made brands
and some unique handmade
items from other countries.
I only sell brands that I
use myself that are made in
America or made by people who it directly benefits,
such as African fans made by
women in Nigeria and Peruvian goods that ladies in Peru
sell directly at markets, Long
said. She also makes some
of the items herself such
as some of the jewelry and
screen-printed shirts. Many

of the items are catered to

young to middle-aged women, but during her weekend
debut, Long found items like
straw hats and towels to be a
big hit among men. The products suit a range of budgets
with items starting around
$10 and going up to $200. As
she hopes to make the truck
a year-round business, Long
says shell eventually add

even more items for men and

babies, making it a one-stop
family gift shop.
The truck is just one of
many new aspects of Longs
life. The new mom to a now
3-year-old son, moved to
from Park Slope to Rockaway
Park last summer with her
husband, who is a firefighter.
She is no stranger to the fashion industry as she graduated from the Pratt Institute for
Fashion Design and worked
on the editorial side of fashion for magazines such as InStyle and W magazine, where
she assisted a stylist for about
five years. After getting married and becoming pregnant
with her first son, Henry,
Long left the fashion world,
but is now jumping back in
with her first business, with
the help of her friend, Liz
Stamplis. This is my first big

New Wave Of Music In Rockaway

YOUNG TALENT IS BRINGING IT
By Luiza Baker

Rock lives.
Nearly every generation has
probably waxed nostalgic at
some point and proclaimed
with their own myopic view,
They just dont make music the
way they used to. I, for one, am
guilty as charged when I think
back on a conversation I had in
2013 with a friend who is prominent in the music industry. I
had been yearning for a harder,
edgier sound, and knowing that
music runs in cycles I asked him,
Where is hard rock and punk
happening right now? Where
will the next wave originate
from? I found myself revisiting
this question in January 2016
when I came across an image
entitled The Punks by Lynn
Hyman Butler. It was a Thursday,
and our alarm didnt go off. Not
wanting the day to go wasted,
I put my kids in the car and we
played hooky at The Brooklyn
Museum to view the Coney Island Exhibits. Strolling through
the galleries, I was reminded of
the grittiness, the sideshows,
concerts on the boardwalk, the
adrenaline inducing rides and
the abandonment of social mores that have made Coney Island
so special since the early twentieth century. I couldnt help but
think of the similarities shared
between Coney Island and both
Rockaways past, and present.
One could make allusions to
these freer ideals as being the
very essence of Rock and Punk,
a distinctly American tonic, a
cure-all fostering freedom of expression through many genera-

Arson Welles

tions. Indeed Rockaway houses

all of these essential ingredients,
positioned at the intersection between surf, food, skate and punkall being forms of artistic expression, and sometimes rebellion.
Its no secret that Rockaway has
become something likened to
the Great Attractor in the last
five years, its seemingly gravitational pull luring well-known
artists and musicians such as
Patti Smith to set up camp here.
However, Rockaways roots in
punk and rock go beyond being inspiration for Rockaway
Beach by the Ramones, having
been called the hometown of
NYC Hardcore Scene stalwarts
such as Shannon Moore of Activator, and Walter Schreifels of
Youth of Today, Gorilla Biscuits
and Quicksand fame. As a child
of the seventies and eighties
bearing witness to these movements, I could have easily been
somewhat close-minded walking into the Noisy Paint Box Battle of The Bands at Fort Tilden
a few weeks ago. But as it turns
out. the answer to my question may have been just under
my nose, or to use a Southern
expression: If it were a snake, it
would have bit me.
Most of Rockaway is familiar
with Indaculture, a local band
who just celebrated 13 years
playing, (together for 17) with a
performance at Connollys on
Sunday night. However on that
night at Fort Tilden it became
clear to me that something is
happening here, a rising tide of
local bands following in their
footsteps. Having seen Rattrap
Bumpkin on numerous occa-

Blame Mercury

sions, who most recently represented Rockaway at Showstoppers On The Boardwalk this
past weekend in Coney Island,
I knew that I would be guaranteed a good night. What I did
not anticipate were the stellar performances I would see
by The Skates, The Skells and
Blame Mercury. I was immediately struck by the professionalism and skill of the bands that
performed that night. I found
myself filled with mischievous
delight, but also thoughts of a
Fender Stratocaster purchased
for my children, which has been
quietly collecting dust in my
basement. I wondered: How
did they get started? and How
can I see even more of this happen here? I decided to investigate.
Luckily enough, I found that
many of the musicians I reached
out to were more than happy to
discuss this with me. My mission
was to find ways to encourage
even more Rockaway kids to start
their own bands, and express

Rattrap Bumpkin

themselves regardless of formal

musical training. Last Wednesday a meeting was set up at Playland Motel where I met with Frisco Granda, Caitlin McMullen
and Albert Cohen of The Skates,
Saruh Lacoff of Blame Mercury,
Eric Dejmek of The Skells and
Tom Jodice of Arson Welles.
While not everyone grew up in
Rockaway, some from Brooklyn,
Broad Channel, and Upstate,
many if not most mentioned
ties to the Open Mic Thursdays
that formerly took place at the
Rockaway Artists Alliance. This
became an important point, as
many clubs have closed in recent
years, which has meant less opportunities for kids to attend all
ages shows.
A common theme that came
up about the benefits of being
able to see live bands was the
sense of camaraderie, meeting
new people, and in turn - deciding to make your own original
music together. It was this very
same camaraderie and excitement for each other that I saw at
Fort Tilden amongst the bands,
which is what I found so compelling. As I heard more from each
one of them in conversation I
was surprised to learn of the
cross-pollination between the
bands here in Rockaway, with
many being members of two if
not three. Even more intriguing
were some of the thoughts from
Saruh and Caitlin about what its
like to be the sole female in their
respective groups, which could
easily be a separate piece in itself with a possible review of Kim

only touch upon some of the

ideas discussed but I am happy to say that there is a real
energy being expressed about
getting more Rockaway kids
involved and playing. I look
forward to more of these ideas
being fleshed out in the coming weeks, and sincerely hope
that more local bands and musicians will join in the conversation. After all, this is ROCKAWAY we have a history and
a future. The possibilities are
endless; lets get it together.
Punk is not dead.

Band.
When asked about musical inspirations I was not surprised, it
was a typical NYC Kid mixed bag
of grunge, classic rock, hip hop,
punk etc. Most grew up listening
to whatever was around them,
which is what makes the NY music
scene so special and why it needs
to be supported from the ground
up. But with fewer opportunities
for minors to gather together and
see live bands, especially with our
geographical isolation, what can
be done to foster Rockaways aspiring musical youth? The good
news is that with our boardwalk
being rebuilt, the continuing success of Riis Bazaar where Max
Powers free concert series Rock!
Away! Will be held on Thursday nights, and festivals such as
Rockstock and Barrels- kids of all
ages will have opportunities to
hear more live music right here at
home than in summers past. The
questions beg of how to continue
this here in the off-season.
Tom Jodice of Arson Welles and
RockaWaves Radio were happy to

The Skells

chime in. Broadcasting online

from Whits End, Rockawaves
Radio showcases local bands
and covers the music scene
here in Rockaway. Its yet one
more way to have everyone feel
included, which could easily
be a stepping stone to other
projects reaching more youth
in the community. While this
panel discussion went into
much depth, and has continued on since then with the remaining members who could
not be present that night, I can

venture since having my son.
I had always dreamed of owning
my own store, Long said.
After settling in Rockaway and
noticing the retail shopping void
on the peninsula, Long decided to make her dream a reality,
but she knew a brick and mortar
store would be a huge undertaking for starters. The thought
of having all the overhead of
a storefront made me anxiety-ridden, but then my friend,
Kathy suggested a fashion truck.
I thought that was a genius idea
and when researching I found
that theres a whole association
of mobile retailers. It made me
realize that I could do something like this, Long said. Long
even turned to Beth Waytowich
and Tara McKiernan of Rockaways first mobile boutique for
some insider tips on this unique
venture. They were so supportive and gave me some advice on
funny things you wouldnt even
think about when it comes to
having a mobile business, like
insulating the walls and installing proper air conditioning.

Our stores are very different,

so I dont see competition between us. I think we both have
the philosophy that the more
small businesses and shopping
options that come to Rockaway,
the better it is for everyone.
Long went on a hunt for the
perfect truck last year and
came across an ad on Craigslist for an old cookie truck in
Carlisle, PA. I had seen a few
other trucks but I had this gut
feeling about this truck. It was

18-feet, which is hard to come

by and it had barn doors. I
knew it was the one, she said.
Long and her husband made
the trip to Carlisle and came
back with the future home of
The Swellife in January. Over
the course of three months,
Longs husband helped build
out the entire interior of the
truck in his free time, transforming it from a cookie delivery truck to a chic boutique.
My husband has really helped

Page 37
make my dreams come true,
Long said.
In addition to serving as a retail store, Long hopes to offer
services like personal shopping
and styling and host shopping
parties, where shell bring the
truck to someone for an event.
She also hopes to hold interactive events like temporary gold
foil tattoo and nail art days.
Long plans to make The Swellife a year-round business, so
after the summer shell be participating in shopping events
around Rockaway, plus setting
up at different markets around
New York, such as the LIC Flea
Market. For the summer, the
truck will be at different locations on the peninsula, from
Shore Front Parkway around
the concessions, Beach 129th
street and starting in July,
shell be at the Riis Park Beach
Bazaar during weekends. The
best way to find the trucks
location is by following @the_

information is also available
on Longs website, www.theswellife.com or Facebook page

Creative Wine Racks

By Artie Wallace

One of our readers asked

me to do an article on Wine
Racks, so here it is. There are
many things you can make
wine racks out of including
(but not limited to) an old
nightstand, PVC pipe, recycled pallets, etc. Were going
to focus on one of the easier
but still decorative designs.
For starters, you will need to
think about how many wine
bottles you will want on your
rack then follow the instructions below.

Pre-drilling the holes, screw

your wine rack to the center
of the second piece of wood.
4- Sand your wine rack using an 80-grit piece of sandpaper, then again with a 120grit sandpaper.
5- Stain your wine rack to
the color of your choice using
MinWax Stain and Sealer.
6- Protect your wine rack by
coating it with lacquer (brush
on or spray on will both work
fine).
7- Hang your wine rack
horizontally (with the holes
pointing upward) or vertical-

1 tablespoons butter (diced)

wood (I recommend Cedar
or Oak). Your wood should
be 3.5 to 4 wide, not less
than 1 thick and the length
should be 5 for every bottle
you are planning to have on
it (allow an additional 8 if
youre going to stand one upright).
2- Drill a 1 hole on a 30
to 45 degree angle every five
inches (leaving about eight
inches of space at the end for
a bottle to stand upright if you
choose).
3- For longer wine racks you
may need additional support.
You can make this support by
adding an additional piece
of wood the same length.

upward and towards the undrilled section if space was

sure to anchor your wine rack
securely using butterfly anchors (if you cant secure into
a beam).

so).

Justin Zemser Memorial

FOOTBALL TOURNAMENT THIS SATURDAY
On May 12, 2015, Rockaway
resident Justin Zemser, a midshipman from the U.S. Naval
Academy, was among those
killed in the Amtrak train derailment. He was 20. The loss
of this scholar, athlete and
overall good man was tremendous to the Channel View
School for Research community, where Zemser, aka
Z-Man, had attended. Now,
CVSR is honoring the young
man with an event that exemplifies much of what he loved.
On Saturday, June 4 at
12 p.m., the community is
welcome to attend the first
Z-Man Memorial Football
Tournament at the CVSR
field (100-00 Beach Channel
Drive). About 10 teams, made
up of Channel View students,
alumni and those who played
for the Beach Channel Campus Football Team, will participate in this flag football
tournament to honor Zemser, who had played football at
Channel View and the Naval
Academy. Justin was the type
of kid who really represented what Channel View is all
about. He was very community oriented and went above
and beyond to help others. He
played football for Channel
View and developed long lasting friendships here. Being
that he loved sports, especially football, some of the kids
thought it would best represent him by having a football
game in his honor, CVSRs
Community Associate, Lauren OConnor said.
OConnor, Zemzers former teachers including history teacher Rob Engelbert,
English teacher Mike Kennedy, and other staff members
have helped to organize Saturdays event which will include a DJ, performances by
the CVSR dance team, a concession stand, a rock painting
station set up by Zemsers father, a 50/50, raffles, a donation booth and event t-shirts
for sale. The event will serve
as a fundraiser for the Justin

Zemser Scholarship Fund,

which will go to a high school
senior who most exemplifies
the spirit that Zemser embodied. The cost for a ticket on
Saturday is only $4 to make it
affordable, but additional donations are welcome.
OConnor and Engelbert,
who both knew Zemser, spoke
on behalf of the character of
the young man who had attended CVSR since the 6th
grade. One of our colleagues
referred to him as Mr. Channel View, OConnor said.
Channel View has 15 Words
to Live By such as knowledge,
responsibility,
community,
service, tolerance, potential
and he embodied every one,
she said. He really loved
Channel View and it was like
a family to him. When he gave
his valedictorian speech, he
made mention of the staff
that impacted him since 6th
grade, but ironically, I think
he had more of an impact on
us, Engelbert said. We have
College Now classes through
Kingsborough where the kids
come in early and receive
college credit. I dont think
Justin missed a day, and he
refused to let his friends
sleep in and miss these classes, Engelbert said. He was
the rock that held the senior class together, especially
when we were displaced during Sandy. We were in Franklin K. Lane HS and we were
organizing a College March,
where seniors mail in their

bons in the shape of a Z to the

fence outside of the football
field, which became a makeshift memorial site. In September, a memorial rock with
Zemsers photo was placed by
the football field. Saturdays
event will be another way to
honor Zemser for years to
come.
With the money raised from
the event, the staff hopes to
be able to award a member
of the senior class with the
Justin Zemser Scholarship in
time for graduation. It will be
a student that holds the same
ideals as Justin, someone who
holds academics and community service and helping others
in high regard, Engelbert said.
We hope to be able to award
the scholarship at this years
graduation because a lot of
these seniors knew Justin and
played ball with him and it will
be a big thing at this years ceremony, OConnor said.
OConnor encourages all to
join on Saturday. Its going
to be an awesome event. Its
something positive coming
out of something tragic that
will show how the Rockaway
community comes together
to do something honorable in
the name of a great kid. Its going to keep his memory alive
for years to come, she said.
The weather should cooperate on Saturday, but in the
event of rain, the tournament
will be held on June 11. Follow
the Z-Man Memorial Football Tournament event page
on Facebook for updates.

college applications and Justin gave a speech, rallying the

seniors, telling them that being displaced wasnt the best
situation, but they needed to
continue to persevere and do
the best that they can, Engelbert said. OConnor, who also
knew Zemser from the Dayton Towers as a neighbor and
pool lifeguard, added that
outside of school, Zemser
did what he could to help his
neighborhood after Sandy.
He went to peoples houses
to help them and didnt stop
until he had helped everyone
he knew that was really devastated by the storm, she said.
The Dayton Towers is a small
community within itself and
everyone knows everybody.
Youd see Justin and he was
so polite and respectful and
always carrying a nice smile.
You dont see that too often
with kids. The Zemsers did
an amazing job raising him,
OConnor said.
The news of Zemzers passing was devastating to the
Channel View community.
We had to go into Channel
View family mode. Some kids
were crying, some were collapsing. It was kind of bittersweet that we got the news on
a weekday, so everyone was
together and his friends were
able to console each other,
OConnor said. The tributes
started to pour in as his peers
remembered the young man
who had made such a strong
impact. The school held a
candlelight vigil and tied rib-

Locals Shine In Mauy Thai Battles

Mixed Martial Arts, which incorporates kicks, punches, knees and
elbows is one of the fastest-growing sports on the planet right now.
Muay Thai however, the Art of 8
limbs, is still working tirelessly to
gain attraction here in the USA.
Coach Chris Romulo, owner and Head Coach at CROM
Physical Culture won the World
Kickboxing Association National Championship two years in a
row, 2003/2004 in Virginia Beach,
Va. This year for the 1st time ever
the WKA amateur national tournament was held in Queens, New
York at QueensBorough Community College. As always, this
tourney brings in novice and A
class talent, youth to adult, from
across the country to test their
skills and training in three days
of ring combat. This year CROM
Physical Culture brought three of
their future talents to apply what
Chris Romulo coached them to
do through a nine-week training
camp. Two of these competitors
are a part of CROMs youth scholarship program that is funded
partially by the gym and also by
donations to the nonprofit or-

ganization, the Muay Thai Project. All three teammates faced

quality opposition in the quarterfinals, with 2 of CROMs older
teens fighting with all their hearts
to the final bell only to be inched
out of the tournament by judges
decisions. CROMs youngest athlete, Joselito Collado, 14, was able
to stop his opponent in the 1st
round scoring a TKO stoppage.
The next day, leading him into
the finals, JC was able to win by
forfeit, since his next opponent
decided to bow out of the competition. With only a few kids in his

weight bracket, JC was awarded

as the victor in his 102 lb. division,
walking away with the 2016 WKA
National Championship
With plenty of energy and fight
left in him, JCs coaches decided to make a calculated jump
back into the tourney two weight
classes up from his original to test
his skills with heavier opponents.
Taking on a much taller and bigger fighter, JC rose to the occasion
once again by scoring another
TKO stoppage before the final
bell. This set the stage with yet
another taller and more formi-

dable counterpart, since Romulo

watched this opponent win by
TKO in his quarterfinal bout. So
with JC and his opponents skills
looking evenly matched, Romulo
knew this was going to be a huge
test that they all looked forward to.
With one of the toughest matches
JC has ever faced, he showed true
grit and resilience through all
three rounds only to lose by decision. With his head held high,
both fighters congratulated each
other showing much respect and
gratitude for the scrappy performance! Coaches Chris and Sarah
Romulo are proud of their entire
team because of all the hard work
they endured and leaving it all in
the ring!
Once again CROM proved their
motto to be true...All it takes is
heart. (This report was submitted by CROM).

Jamaica Bay Softball Starts Sunday

By The Commissioner

The weather is breaking at the

perfect time as we open up our
season this Sunday June 5th. We
would like to congratulate the
2015 Champion Mudsharks as
they look to win their 4th Championship in the last five years.
Wed also would like to congratulate the Orioles starting their
21st season, the longest tenured
team in the League. This year
the Orioles are under new management with the retirement of
Sean OConnell. Another special congrats on retirement goes
out to Charlie Arneo also of the
Orioles. The JBSL would like to
welcome 2 new teams two the
league this year, the MoneyBalls
& Knights of Columbus. Anyone interested in coming down
to watch or joining a team, all
games are played on Sunday
mornings starting at 9:30am in
Broad Channel by 20th Road
(Last road before the bridge).
Heres a Preview of Week 1.
Chuggernauts vs Mudsharks,
9:30 Field 1
The Mudsharks are like wine.

They get better with age. The

oldest team in the league and
they still found a way to come
out on top last season. They have
won the Championship three out
of the last four years and are the
favorite to win it all in 2016. After a
hot 4-1 start last season the Chuggernauts got cold and went 0-8-1
to finish the year and missed the
playoffs by a .5 a game. Dougie
Mertz and company mean business this year as its rumored they
started spring training in midMarch. Hopefully the practice
helps them put a few more in the
win column. They may get more
than four wins this year but it
wont happen in Week 1.
PREDICTION:
Mudsharks
Sweep
Misfits vs Orioles, 9:30 Field 2
A rematch of last years first
round playoff matchup. The
Orioles look to get revenge on
the Misfits who upset them last
year. Os finished 3rd last year
and looking for another winning
season for only the second time
in team history. Misfits finished
5-9 which was good enough to

sneak into the playoffs. Hopefully they can put a few more wins
together this season. With Seany O throwing out the Ceremonial First Pitch to open the JBSL
season, it may just be the Year of
the Orioles especially with him
standing on the other side of
fence this year.
PREDICTION: Orioles Sweep
No-Shows vs Old Head, 11:30
Field 1
Old Head has had the NoShows number in the playoffs the
last two seasons, sending them
home packing when they faced
each other. Brian Fox guaranteed
a Championship for Old Head
but with a little roster shake up
who knows if that is possible. The
No-Shows will hopefully show
up this year and make a run at
the title.
PREDICTION: Split
Knights of Columbus 2672 vs
Morning Wood, 11:30 Field 2
Morning Wood has unfinished
business as they ran the table last
year and came up short in the
Championship. M.W. has been in
the Championship every season

since the league returned and

hope to get back there once again.
Not sure if they will after losing one
of their players for the season due
to injury. KOC enters the season as
a new team but with familiar faces.
With players from different teams
and few past JBSL greats coming
out of retirement, can the Knights
bring the title back to Rockaway?
Morning Wood had a 23 game
win streak before it snapped in the
final. Look for them to get back
to their winning ways Week 1.
PREDICTION: Morning Wood
Sweep
Moneyballs - BYE
Another new team into the
league. Made up of all Rookies to
the league, these young guys are
all past champions of the Jamaica Bay LITTLE League. Hopefully they can grow up to the Mens
League and show the older guys
what they got.
Looking forward to a great season. Good Luck to all the teams
this year. For up to date News,

Channel Baseball Advances to PSAL Semifinals

In any team sport, the best
teams have consistency and
chemistry is a quote from Pro
Football Hall of Fame Roger
Staubach. That pretty much describes the performance of the
Beach Channel Educational Campus Varsity Baseball team (aka
Channel) over the past few years.
The Channel Dolphins have
clinched their PSAL AA Division for
the fourth year in a row with a 15-1
regular season record. In 2014, the
team captured the championship
in a finale played in Yankee Stadium. On the afternoon of Friday,
May 27th, they hoped to retrace
that path to the Bronx by facing
Brooklyn Technical High School
Engineers on the Dolphins home
field on Beach Channel Drive in
the playoff quarterfinals.
Despite an offshore NYPD rescue of a stranded jet skier in Jamaica Bay, the players were laser
focused on the game. Coached
by Howard Beach resident and a
former NY Mets draft pick John
Mangieri, Channel rallied back
from a one run deficit to decisively
defeat Brooklyn Tech 9-1. Led by a
four-hit, six inning pitching perfor-

mance by southpaw ace Antonio

Moccia, Channel limited Techs total to one earned run. Relief Pitcher
Tyler McLaughlin wrapped things
up in the top of the seventh.
After a slow offense start, Channel figured out the tall, right-handed Engineer pitcher and turned
on the power in the bottom of
the third inning. Shortstop Patrick Diaz doubled in a run, which
should have been an inside-thepark home run if it wasnt for the
Tech centerfielder making an
outstanding defensive play.
The enthusiastic crowd of parents, faculty, friends and family
sat nervously at the edge of the
fields concrete benches for most
of the game. But things went
Channels way in the middle of
the game. In the bottom of the
fourth inning, Moccia mowed
down the opposing pitcher to
get out of a bases-loaded jam.
The Dolphins added more runs
in the bottom of the fifth when
McLaughlin knocked in Shawn
Griffin from third base and then
Catcher Joe Calandra singled in
pitch runner Polanco. The chants
of Go Channel! increased in fre-

quency and volume.

Channel broke the game open
in the bottom of the sixth by piling on four more runs at the expense of two Tech relief pitchers.
McLaughlin got the final batter
to ground out to the shortstop
Diaz who completed the play and
game with a bullet to Tyler Paladine at first base.
Coach Mangieri couldnt say
enough about his players. Antonio gave up four hits and has been
not only the ace but a bulldog on
the mound all year. Manny Gonzalez has been the teams leading
hitter and run producer all year.
He had two hits in the game and
three RBIs. Joe Calandra also has
been our catalyst at the top of
the order and the table setter for
the middle part of order since he
started playing 4 years ago.

bunch of kids who are looking to
relive their dream of winning another city title and for the younger guys a taste of historical Yankee
Stadium. I am proud of the maturity of these seniors both on and
off the field no matter if we win or
lose in the scorebook.
For five seniors, this will be
their last season at Channel.
Joe Calandra, Pat Diaz, Antonio
Moccia and Shawn Griffin will all
continue their baseball careers at
Kingsborough Community College next year. Manny Gonzalez
will play for Globe Institute of
Technology in Manhattan.
Channel advances to the PSAL
quarterfinals which was played
on Wednesday, June 1 at 3:30 PM
on their home field. We hope that
the consistency continues.

With practice and sound fundamentals, any golfer can possess a solid short game. And
if you can get your technique
correct it will not only save you
strokes, it will help your long
game as well. Ball played back
in stance almost in line with rear
foot. Weight 70% on front foot
with a slightly open and slightly
moved back position, rear foot
stays straight. The distribution of
your weight should not change
during the chip shot. Gripdown on club so your hands are
just above where the grip ends
and the shaft becomes visible.
Make sure at address that your
hands are ahead of the ball, and
a good thought is to visualize
the club head as the last part of
swing to reach impact. This will

give you better feel and control

of the club. Grip club lightly to
avoid tension.
The swing is a simple pendulum motion. You DO NOT
use your wrist, so your hands,
arms, shoulders and club work
as a unit. There is very little
movement, if any from your
lower body which stays stationary throughout each shot. Use
a higher lofted club which will
make the ball go in the air.
I know that it is difficult for
many of you to have time to
practice. But if you cant get to
a practice area, get some golf
whiffle balls and practice in
your home off a flat rug, but
find time to practice and your
game will certainly improve.
Have a Great Week.

Rockaway Little League

SHOW GRATITUDE DURING MEMORIAL WEEKEND BREAK
Rockaway Little League
joined the annual Memorial
Day March on Monday in appreciation of all the men and
women who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. The Memorial Day break
is also a good opportunity to
express appreciation for all of
those who make Little League
a reality for Rockaways youth.
The weather was wet this
spring, which means keeping the baseball and softball
fields playable was a great
challenge. Fortunately our
team of grounds crew miracle
workers, led by Matt Piccione
and John Duggan, were up
to the challenge on multiple
occasions. Rockaway Little
Leagues fields in Fort Tilden
(Gateway NRA) are among the
finest youth sports facilities
in New York City. Thats due
to the tireless work of these
gentlemen and the sacrifices
of their spouses.
Over the last two years,
Rockaway Little Leagues
leadership has made it a priority to improve the culture
of sportsmanship for players,
coaches and parents. We have
always taken pride in our children and volunteer coaches.
However, the life lessons Little
League teaches (teamwork,
fair play, respect for each other, sportsmanship) are more
valuable in the long run than
hitting and fielding skills. Stu
Mackoff has led RLLs effort to
work with the Positive Coaching Alliance and develop
these lifelong qualities in our
children.
Very little could be accomplished on the fields each
year if it were not for the administration and coordination of Kamin Green. Kamin
has brought us into the 21st
century when it comes to
registration, scheduling and
resource utilization. Each
year, he goes to great lengths
to accommodate numerous,
seemingly impossible scheduling requests during the regular season.
Even with an all-volunteer

staff, it takes a lot of money

to run a little league significantly more than we collect
in registration fees. Virginia Donahue has taken over
fundraising the last two years
and found fun, creative ways
to get extra revenue and to get
more parents to participate in
RLL activities. She has also
taken over management of
the annual Opening Day extravaganza.
Sharing news about RLL
events and game results is another important activity. Alison Kase joined the board this
year and is helping to bring
our communications into the
21st century as well. (What is
this Face Book?) This reporter
would also like to thank the
several coaches who regularly
file game highlights. We dont
really report on games, we
compile what the coaches
submit. Jimmy Mullen, Ed
Smith, Howard Schneider,
Jim Hurley, Dee DOrazio and
Jacqueline Tansey are regular
contributors.
Safety is always a great concern since flying baseballs
and swung bats can really
hurt. Robby Schwach puts
together a comprehensive
safety plan each year and is
always thinking of new ways
to protect the children as well
as the spectators. (Pay attention when you are walking
between fields; balls fly there

too.)
One of the jewels of our
league is the Challenger Division. This effort to give our
special athletes the opportunity to enjoy the great American game is led by Joe Featherston. Board member Randy
Koenig has been known to
pitch multiple innings in
Challenger games and happily gives up a lot of runs.
No organization runs without management. As everyone in Rockaway should
know, Marty Andresen and
has been at the helm Rockaway Little League since most
of us were still playing baseball ourselves. He is our CEO
and inspirational leader. VP
Rob Rose is like the COO. He
sets the agendas, runs the
meeting and is called in to
address the myriad of issues
throughout the season.
One of the unsung jobs is
being a division Commissioner, especially in the older
divisions. It requires attention every week to address
scheduling issues, roster issues, rule debates and policy
disagreements. This years
commissioners are Martin
Hoban, Michael McCann,
Kerry Price, Alison Kase, Ed
Smith, Jennifer Pye, Virginia Donohue, Rob Schwach,
Moira Mullen, Kamin Green
and Rob Rose.
These commissioners over-

see the efforts of more than

100 volunteer coaches. The
coaches, many of whom are
parents, dedicate scores of
hours to games and practices
throughout the season. They
are our most important team
members when it comes to
teaching Rockaways boys and
girls solid life lessons. Unfortunately, not every volunteer
who contributes to Rockaway
Little League is listed here but
the Board of Directors wishes
to express its thanks to all.
With 54 teams, Rockaway
Little League needs just about
that many sponsors. Sponsors provide money to offset
the cost of uniforms. Several of them go above and beyond with continuing contributions as needs arise. This
