Freeboard Allowance:
For earth canal the lower limit is 35 cm and the
upper limit is 140 cm. Generally the free board =
[0.35+1/4h] m. Where h is depth of flow.
Allowances should be made for bank settlements.
For lined canals, the top of the lining is not usually
extended for the full height of the free board.
Usually it is extended to 15cm to 70cm above the
design water level.

TUNNELS
Tunnels are underground conveyance structures
constructed by special tunneling methods without
disturbing the natural surface of the ground. In many
modern high head plants, tunnels form an important
engineering feature.
In the headrace of water conveyance sytem, tunneling
is popular because of the following reasons:

LOSSES
In order to define the sizing of the turbines and
evaluate energy production, the head loss due to
friction and to singularities along the canal route need
to be calculated.
Herein below the method of evaluating the losses in
the different waterways section and particular points
is discussed.

The above equation suggests that the draft tube allows the
turbine to utilize all of the energy due to the elevation Hs of
the runner above the tail water level, and, for another, makes
it possible to utilize most of the kinetic energy of the water
that leaves the turbine, because, owing to the increase in 52
area, the velocity v3 is much lower than v2.
