REPORTS TO:

Construction Project Leader

HOURS OF WORK:

Monday Thursday 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.


Friday 7:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

DUTIES:
Supervision of Staff (Laborers, Apprentices and Summer Students)
Provide direct supervision to Senior Laborers, Laborers and Carpenter Apprentices
Coordinate work to be completed for all new buildings, repairs and renovations as directed by the
Construction Project Leader. This includes scheduling work around contractors and with available staff as
needed
Assist with sourcing and procurement of project supplies and materials as directed by the Construction
Project Manager or the Operations Manager, in consultation with the Administrative Assistant to
Operations
Monitor and ensure completion of work orders
Ensure completion of duties by staff in a timely manner; within policies and procedures, within budget
Monitor and ensure that all workers and contractors are compliant with health and safety requirements at
all times and act as a role model in this regard
Coach and counsel employees and document any issues on a daily basis
Provide input to the Construction Project Leader with respect to performance appraisals (PIMs) for the
Senior Laborer and Carpenter Apprentice positions
Resolve work problems and recommend work measures to improve productivity
Identify training needs to Project Leader and train and/or arrange for departmental training of workers
when possible
Participate in construction staff interviews when requested
Oversee all aspects of Ministry Apprenticeships for assigned MSIFN carpenter apprentices
Planning and Management
Ensure stamped drawings for structural work are received before the project commences
Assist the Construction Project Leader and Operations Manager in development of Construction
Department budget
Organize and direct staff daily to required jobs and areas as required
Participate as a member of the Health and Safety Committee as directed by the Operations Manager
Assist with development of standard operating procedures
Attend scheduled meetings with staff and community regarding construction issues
Attend monthly Operations Meetings if requested
Maintain daily construction log
Labour: (As Required)
Construct, renovate and maintain houses and other facilities including demolition
Measure, cut, shape, assemble and join materials made of wood, wood substitutes and other materials
Build foundations, install floor beams, lay sub-flooring and erect walls and roof systems
Fit and install trim items, such as doors, stairs, molding and hardware

Erect and dismantle concrete forms, scaffolding, ramps, and barricades required at construction site
Special projects, assigned tasks and additional regular duties as required by the Construction Project Leader
and/or Operations Manager (including assisting with Pow-Wow, set up for indoor community events, etc.)
Position will involve climbing and working at heights, lifting and carrying heavy objects and occasionally
working in extreme temperatures and loud noises

PAY RATE:

$26.48/hour (H1)

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Carpenter Trade Certification (CFQ Ticket)
Minimum 8 years of total work experience, minimum 5 years carpentry experience
Experience reading and costing blueprints and sketches
Safety, First Aid, CPR, WHMIS training and certification
Valid drivers license and $1M liability insurance
CPIC acceptable to position upon conditional offer
Knowledge and understanding of Native culture, traditions, teachings, community dynamics
Knowledge of legislation governing First Nations, especially building and construction
Knowledge of Privacy legislation
Knowledge of Ontario Occupational Health and Safety, First Aid, CPR and WHMIS Certification
Knowledge of the Ontario Building Code
Knowledge of all aspects of building construction i.e. septic, electrical, plumbing, and excavating
Experience operating electrical tools
Considered and Asset:
Related Post-Secondary Diploma or Degree
Post-secondary experience/training/education in supervising people
Project Management and Asset Management Software knowledge and experience
Drafting Software knowledge and experience (AutoCAD)
Working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Outlook and Internet
