Always There Are The Horses

A poem by M. Adelia

I ride because I rode as a child when life was simpler and somehow more complete.
Only the whiff of a clean horse is needed to remind me of days gone by.
For always there have been the horses.

I ride because of all the great horse souls who have shared their lives with me and
taught me more than I can say. Their names and faces flash before me as old friends.
I ride because of all the horses I shall never ride. Those I have watched and marveled
at from afar for all their grace and beauty. This is the stuff of a child’s dream, the kind
that doesn’t die with time. Always there are the horses.

I ride because the seasons call to me. Each unique in its appeal and all quite
frequently best viewed from the back of a favorite horse. I ride because of all things,
horses are my passion. They inspire and encourage, energize, and challenge in ways
I cannot explain to the un-initiated. I ride because of the rush of stretching one’s self
just a bit farther today than before both mind and body. Always there are the horses.

I ride because of those briefest of spans when the partnership comes to full promise. When the path twists and barriers fall,
each footfall is measured and balanced between the two as a dance. There are no others…only this moment and this single
step to ride. The memories of those times stand vivid in my mind to be recalled with all the freshness of the day at will and in
times less grand.

But if I must choose, I ride because I have dreams yet to live. I ride because I have dreams yet to have and what exactly they
will be tomorrow I cannot say…but always there will be the horses.

open in Waleska, GA. Back Country Horsemen of North Georgia was involved in this effort. B. Another article announced that
The American Horse Council supports the Complete America’s Great Trails Act (H.R.1912). In 1968, the National Trail System
Act was signed into law. To date, Congress has created eight NSTs, several of which are open to equestrians along all or part of
their length. The new bill would create a new tax credit for private landowners who grant a conservation easement to a NST that
crosses their property. C. Equine Affaire will be held February 4-7, 2010 in Pomona, CA. Bonnie Davis will conduct four horse-
camping clinics.

Seferino Raul Murguia
Sep 3, 1942-Dec 26, 2009

Resident of Eureka Seferino Raul Murguia, Humboldt County Planning Commissioner and former 2nd District Supervisor,
died on December 26th, 2009 surrounded by his family.

Seferino was a Mexican caballero (horseman) and a true gentleman. He was 67-years-old. Sef was born on the Hardison
Ranch, Filmore, CA on September 3rd 1942, the first of eight children to Florentino and Estella Murguia. He grew up playing
and working in the orchards of San Jose with his brothers and sisters, where he watched as the fields gave way to urban
sprawl. His fondest memories were hunting with his father and beloved Uncle Joe in the Los Padres National Forest. These
experiences set in motion a life-long passion to preserve wild places and manage the rural landscape responsibly.

Sef moved to Humboldt County to begin his education at Humboldt State University (HSU) after graduating from high
school in San Jose. During the summers, he worked as a lookout for the US Forest Service. His first assignment was at the
Gasquet Ranger District, on Monkey Ridge, at the tender age of 18. Sef had a beautiful tenor voice and he sang in the HSU
choir. He also became an adept swordsman on the HSU Fencing Team. Following his graduation in 1967, Sef worked for the
State of California, Department of Human Resources. In 1972, he ran for and was elected Second District Supervisor, on a
platform which promoted the preservation of Humboldt's natural beauty and quality of life. Following his term in public
office, Sef worked many years for the State of California, Employment Development Department; he owned his own mail-
order Ferrier supply business; served as a planner for the Yurok Tribe for seven years; and worked as a planning consultant. At
the age of 60, he obtained his Masters Degree in Planning and Development Studies from University of Southern California.
He served as a member of the Humboldt County Planning Commission for the past nine years.

Sef loved his family, the outdoors, and the love of his life, Elizabeth, who he married on May 26, 1979. He was a 'renaissance
man' in the truest sense - a voracious reader with numerous interests, a near photographic memory and an exquisite ability to
interpret the larger meaning. Sef passed on his respect for nature to his children on many outdoor adventures, including back
packing trips in the Marble Mountains, horse packing and hunting in the Trinity Alps, and hiking the coastal bluffs. Sef and
Liz created a warm home, a gathering place for family and friends, sharing campfire stories and songs under the trees in the
back yard, and excellent meals around the dining room table. Sef was passionate about his Mexican lineage. He was a
vaquero, and working with horses was a major part of his life. He loved singing traditional Mexican songs, a fine horse, a
comfortable saddle, a good rope, and a long trail. He passed on a fierce pride in his heritage to his children and grandchildren.

Sef is survived by his wife Elizabeth Okerstrom Murguia of Eureka, children: Todd (Elisabeth) McMahon of Willits; Dana
Murguia of Germany; Adam (Bethany) Murguia of Sausalito; and Michael Murguia of Emeryville. His grandchildren are:
Morgan, Sarah and Jessica McMahon, Zachary, Owen, Maresol, Miguel, Ana, and Audrey Murguia. He is also survived by
his siblings, Juan, Susanna, Rosura, Marjorie, Richard and David; numerous nieces and nephews and many cousins. In lieu of
flowers, contributions may be made to the Seferino Raul Murguia Memorial Fund, at the Humboldt Area Foundation, 373
Indianola Rd., Bayside, 95524. The fund was established by Sef and his family to promote a conservation corridor in and
around Humboldt Bay and the City of Eureka for the benefit of the public.

for air ambulance services.

As one might expect, air ambulance services are not inexpensive. Many insurance policies note that air
ambulances are to be use for medical necessity only. There are many reasons why air ambulance services
are so expensive. First, is the method of transport. Operating helicopters, filling them with gas and employing
pilots is quite the expense. Second, the critical care providers and the flight staff. To operate efficiently the
company will need traffic control operators to guide the helicopter to safety. On the helicopter, the critical
care providers are some of the most talented people in the industry. These people can work fast and treat
people while moving hundreds of feet in the air- that talent comes with a hefty price tag. The fact that not
many physicians are capable of doing that makes those people valuable. Third, is the amount of risk. If one
has to call an air ambulance, there is little room for error; and risk is expensive. Internationally, air ambulance
prices can be as low as $11,000 or as high as $116,000; nothing one would want to pay out of pocket. Inside
country borders the price can range from $4,000 to $22,000 depending on the care needed. (from the Mercy
