Janger
Janger = humming
-

Janger is a type of Balinese traditional dance.

This folksong is traditionally sung by Balinese youths while they dance the

Janger together during evening parties.

Features sequence of trancelike humming, dancing, and singing from the girls
participating in the dance with boisterous physical and vocal outbursts from the

boys.
Janger is usually accompanied by instruments from the traditional Balinese
gamelan ensemble, most notably the flute and drum (dancers imitate the sounds
of these instruments with their voices).

Highlights the difference of texture between the traditionally feminine

beginning of the Janger dance with its legato quality and movements, and the
more energetic masculine part of the dance with its jagged rhythms and quicker
tempo (emphasize this difference in the performance).

The Tyger
Original poem/lyrics

Things to note

Tyger, Tyger, burning bright

Repetition of tyger creates

chant-like mood mysteriousness

burning bright refers to the fiery
orange fur/energy that the Tyger
has

In the forests of the night

Elusive yet burning with inner force

What immortal hand or eye

Symbolises sight and creation

Could frame thy fearful symmetry

Symmetry artistic beauty

In what distant deeps or skies

Asks where the Tyger was created

burning of the Tygers eyes

(power and fearfulness)

Notion of daring is introduced

shoulder bodily strength

sinews muscles/tendons

Asks how the Tyger was created

Metaphor of blacksmith

Burnt the fire of thine eyes?

On what wings dare he aspire?
What the hand dare seize the fire?
And what shoulder and what art
Could twist the sinews of thy heart?
And when thy heart began to beat,
What dread hand and what dread feet?
What the hammer? What the chain?
In what furnace was thy brain?
What the anvil? What dread grasp
Dare its deadly terrors clasp!

Kimi wo Nosete
Kimi wo Nosete = Carrying you
Original lyrics
Ano chiheisen kagayaku no wa

English translation
The horizon shines as it is hiding you

Doko ka ni kimi o kakushite iru kara

Taku-san no hi ga

somewhere
The dearest thing about the many lights is

Natsukashii no wa

that you are in one of them

Ano dore ka hitotsu ni

Kimi ga iru kara
Saa dekake you

Lets go on a journey with slices of bread,

Hitokire no pan

a knife and a lamp all in a bag

Naifu Ranpu kaban ni tsume konde

Tou-san ga nokoshita atsui omoi

Father gave me those warm feelings,

Ka-san ga kureta ano manazashi

Chikyuu wa mawaru kimi o kakushite

Mother gave me that gaze

The Earth spins as it is hiding you in its

Kagayaku hitomi kirameku tomoshibi

Chikyuu wa mawaru kimi o nosete

gaze, glittering with shining lights

The Earth spins as it carries you, and

Itsuka kitto deau

surely someday, we will meet and the

Bokura o nosete
(the rest of the lyrics are repeated)

earth will carry both of us

Itsumo Nando Demo
Itsumo nando demo = always with me
Original lyrics
Yondeiru Mune no Dokoka Okude

English translation
Somewhere, a voice calls, in the depths of

Itsumo Kokoro Odoru Yume wo Mitai

my heart
May I always be dreaming, the dreams

Kanashimi wa Kazoekirenai kedo

that move my heart

So many tears of despair, uncountable

Sono Mukou de Kitto Anata ni Aeru

through and through

I know on the other side of them I'll be

Kurikaesu Ayamachi no Sonotabi Hito wa

sure to find you

Every time we fall down to the ground we

Tada Aoi Sora no Aosa wo Shiru

look up to the sky above

We wake to its blueness, as if for the

Hateshinaku Michi wa Tsuzuite Mieru

first time
Though the road is long, lonely and the end

keredo

far away, out of sight

Kono Ryoute wa Hikari wo Dakeru

Sayonara no Toki no Shizukana Mune

I can, with these arms, embrace the light

As I bid farewell my heart stops, tenderly

Zero ni Naru Karada ga Mimi wo Sumaseru

I feel
My silent empty soul begins to listen to

Ikiteiru Fushigi Sinde Iku Fusigi

what is real
The wonder of living, the wonder of dying

Hana mo Kaze mo Machi mo Minna Onaji

The wind, town, and flowers, we all dance

Yondeiru Mune no Dokoka Oku de

in unity
Somewhere, a voice calls, in the depths of

Itsumo Nando demo Yume wo Egakou

my heart
keep dreaming your dreams, don't ever let
them part

Kanashimi no Kazu wo Iitsukusu yori

Why speak of all your sadness or of life's

Onaji Kuchibiru de Sotto Utaou

painful woes
Instead let the same voice sing a gentle

Tojiteiku Omoide no Sono Naka ni Itsumo

song for you

The whispering voice, we will never want to

Wasure takunai Sasayaki wo Kiku

forget,
in each passing memory always there to

Konagona ni Kudakareta Kagami no Ue nimo

guide you
When a mirror has been broken, shattered

Atarashii Keshiki ga Utsusareru

pieces scattered on the ground

Glimpses of new life, are reflected all

Hajimari no Asa Shizuka na Mado

around
Window of beginning let shine the light of

Zero ni Naru Karada Mitasarete Yuke

a new dawn
Let my silent, empty soul be filled and

Umi no Kanata niwa Mou Sagasanai

reborn
No need to search the land, nor sail across

Kagayaku Mono wa Itsumo Koko ni

the sea

Watashi no Naka ni Mitsukerareta Kara

'Cause it's here shining inside me, it's

right here deep inside me
Thanks to you I've found the light, and
it's always with me
