Fishing and Cooking Mastery Guide

Fishing and Cooking are great professions that anyone can learn and get max level with. As
a level 450 Cook you can collect every recipe in the game and cook just about anything
from stamina food for raids to food that will increase your fishing level. Fishing has tons of
mini-game style challenges like the Stranglethorn Fishing Extravaganza and all sorts of rare
fish/objects you can fish up around Azeroth and beyond. This guide will talk about leveling
both Fishing & Cooking from level 1 all the way to 450. It will teach you where to get all the
awesome fishing gear the pros use, and how to win the Stranglethorn Fishing Extravaganza
to get your +40 Fishing Pole. I hope you enjoy all the information I've compiled in this guide
and have great luck fishing in Azeroth!

Fishing
Keep in mind it's much easier to level Fishing along with Cooking. You can go to certain
places to fish from one level to the next collecting the raw materials you need to quickly and
efficiently level Cooking at the same time. For these instructions see the final section of this
guide titled Leveling Fishing and Cooking.
There are Fishing Trainers in all 4 of each faction's major cities. Find the trainer that is
nearest to you on the list below and use the link to find a map of where they are at. Next to
them, there should be a Fishing Supplies merchant where you can buy a Fishing Pole and
your first Baubles.

There are all sorts of 'buffs' that you can put on your Fishing Pole to increase your effective
Fishing Level. The low level ones are the Shiny Bauble and Nightcrawlers. You might be
asking, should I use these? Absolutely! It will increase your ability to catch useful fish and
other extras from where ever you're fishing. Here's a list of the various buffs that you can
get for your fishing pole.

Leveling Fishing
Finally it's time to start leveling fishing. The thing about fishing is that you don't really have
to do anything specific to level, except fish. Before Patch 3.1 you were limited to where you
could fish based on your fishing level, this is no longer the case. Instead, you are limited to
what you can catch based on your fishing level. To determine if a place is appropriate for
you to fish in, take the average level of the nearby mobs and multiply it by 5, that is about
where your fishing should be if you expect to catch decent fish. Otherwise, just cast a few
out and see how it works out. For example, if you're in Tanaris and there are level 40-45
mobs, you probably want to have at least 40*5 = 200 level Fishing before fishing off the
dock in Steamweedle Port.
Now that you've found your Fishing Trainer and purchased some Shiny Baubles, you
probably don't need to go anywhere at first. Just start casting right next to the Fishing
Trainer (they are usually next to fishable water). Watch your bobber and when it bounces,
right click it to receive your loot. You might find it helpful to enable auto-looting in your
Interface Options to make fishing easier. WARNING! If you have auto-looting enabled and
you catch a rare fish like Old Crafty who is Bind on Pickup, a dialog will popup asking if
you're sure you want to loot this fish. If you cast your next line out before you click Okay in
the loot dialog, you will lose your fish and NOT GET CREDIT! So if you are using Auto-Loot
and hoping for that lucky fish, be careful not to cast until you receive your all of your loot.
You will notice that your levels start coming quickly, every catch for awhile, and eventually
every 2 catches. This is because WoW determines whether you will level your fishing skill
based on how many fish you catch at each level. For example, from levels 1-75 you need to
catch 1 fish to level. From levels 75-145 you need to catch 2 fish to level. By the time you
are in the 300s you need to catch 10-11 fish per level. Here's how it breaks down:

At level 300 you will need to find an Outland Fishing Trainer, see the table above to find
your nearest (all of them are in Zangarmarsh). When you cap at level 375 you will need to
head to Dalaran and talk to Marcia Chase near the Fountain (by the Alliance Bank) to open
up levels 375-450.

Fishing in Pools
Fishing Pools are visible areas in the water where you have a higher chance to catch certain
fish or special objects. They are similar to Mining Veins, in that, if you continue to fish from
them they will eventually disappear and respawn at another time. To fish in these pools
your bobber must land within the circular region that defines the pool which can be
admittedly difficult to determine. It's desirable to fish from certain Fishing Pools to catch a

certain fish, for example you might see a Borean Man O'War School off the coast of
Northrend, if you fish into one you will have a significantly higher chance to catch Borean
Man O'War.

Find Fish
With Pools scattered all over the place it can be hard to pick them out with your eye. The
best way to find them is with an ability called Find Fish. You learn this ability from a
Weather-Beaten Journal. These are fished up from several Fishing Pools, mostly Floating
Wreckage, Bloodsail Wreckage of Floating Debris. On all of my fishing characters I have
went to Hillsbrad Foothills and ran along the southern coast until I see Floating Wreckage. It
is well worth your time, it makes it a ton easier to find other Fishing Pools and it shouldn't
take more than 20-30 minutes to pull up a Watertight Trunk and get your Journal.

Fishing Equipment
There's a ton of cool fishing gear that you can collect, most of it has +fishing on it and has a
fun look to it. This stuff is especially helpful to have when leveling fishing but equally as fun
to have when you're maxed out. Let's start with fishing poles, beyond the regular pole there

Fishing Skill 225
Once you reach level 225 Fishing I suggest doing Nat Pagle, Angler Extreme quest for your
+25 Fishing Pole, this is about as good as you need until you're level 80.
Fishing Level 300 and Level 80
Once you hit level 300 and your character is high enough to do Kalu'ak Dailies, start doing
them for about 2 weeks to earn your Mastercraft Kalu'ak Fishing Pole . It is a solid pole, as
good as anything (other than the Arcanite Fishing Pole) Keep doing your Fishing Dailies
while you do the Kalu'ak Dailies for a chance to get one of the rare Jeweled or Bone Fishing
Poles.
On a rainy Sunday
Win the Stranglethorn Fishing Extravaganza. This is an elite chance to show how awesome
you are and win the best Fishing Pole in the game. Read more in the section below.

If you want to max out your Fishing Skill you'll want to collect some of this gear. You should
head to the Fishing Extravaganza (read below) and collect, at least, the 3 pieces from there.
If you're lucky enough to recieve a Weather-Beaten Fishing Hat then that's great, but it's

not necessary (if you really care about lures you should be using Glow Worms, +100
Fishing). The Spun Truesilver Fishing Line is weak compared to the easily obtainable High
Test Eternium Fishing Line, so grab one of those for your best Pole. Find a Cook to make
you a ton of Captain Rumsey's Lager (the mats are all easy to obtain). I skip the Underbelly
Elixir because it's unreliable and must be used in Dalaran.

Stranglethorn Fishing Extravaganza

The Fishing Extravaganza is a Fishing Tournament (the only one in the game) that sends
competitors out every week to see who can catch 40 Speckled Tastyfish the fastest. Only
one person per realm can win each week. It takes place in Stranglethorn Vale every Sunday
at 2pm server time. Here's how it works:
Right at 2:00st all Fishing Pools turn into Schools of Tastyfish and everyone can
immediately start catching Tastyfish.
Pools will despawn after you catch a few fish, and you will have to find another one.
It requires about 225 Fishing Skill to affectively catch Tastyfish.
You should be at least level 40 to defend yourself from nearby mobs
Once you catch 40 Tastyfish, race back to Booty Bay and accept & turn in the quest
Master Angler at Riggle Bassbait.
When the first person wins on your realm, no one else can turn in the quest. There
will be an emote, that will let you know the tournament is over and you are unable
to win.
Here's some strategies that will help you win:
Set your hearth to Booty Bay so that as soon as you catch your 40th Tastyfish you
can hearth.
Use your Find Fish skill (see above)
Find an area with Fishing Pools before the event starts and be ready.
Bind your Fishing ability to a key for rapid deployment.
Ask a friend to help.
Ask them to scout ahead for your next pool.
If you're on a PvP server they can help keep competition down.
Death Knights can help you run over water.
Paladins can give you Crusader to increase your mounted travel speed.
Bring water walking potions in case there's a sticky situation where it is helpful.
Create this macro (#showtooltip Speckled Tastyfish) and place it on your hotbar. It
will display how many fish you have caught
BE PREPARED TO TURN IN THE QUEST - Don't wait until you win to decide which
reward you're going to select. You might run out of time.
There are some extra rewards for winning and participating in this contest. The most sought
after reward is the Accomplished Angler achievement which gives the Salty title. Since the
achievement system has been released, there has been a HUGE demand for winning this
tournament. Be careful.
The weekly winner gets to pick between either the Arcanite Fishing Pole (The best Fishing
Pole in the game) or Hook of the Master Angler (a trinket that turns you into a fish!).
There are 3 other regular rewards for catching rare fish during the 2 hour period the
Tastyfish can be caught. All 3 are received at Fishbot 5000 by turning in the following fish.

This gear is really good to optimize your Fishing, you don't need to be competitive to get
the good stuff either. You can head to Stranglethorn at about 2:45st when the contest is
over and the crowds have diminished, catch the rare fish, and get the above 3 items which
will add a total of +15 Fishing to your entourage.

Achievements
There are 330 achievement points from Fishing, across 33 achievements. The metaachievement (Accomplished Angler) requires a subset of all of these achievements and
rewards you the title 'Salty.' To receive this title, you must complete all of the following
Achievements:

Master Fishing.

At least 375 effective fishing recommended. Enter Zul'Gurub and head to Pagle's Point (on
map) where you'll find Nat Pagle's Measuring Tape - accept the quest:

Return to Nat Pagle in Duskwallow Marsh and turn in the quest. Purchase a few Mudskunk
Lures from him. Now head back to ZG and start catching some Zulian Mudskunks from the
Muddy Churning Water (in the inner mote). Use the Mudskunk Lure and return to Pagle's
Point (on map) to fish up Gahz'ranka and earn the achievement.

The Coin Master
Catch all 53 coins from the Dalaran Fountain. People have reported this taking 5-6 hours of
fishing. I don't recommend doing this all at once, instead spend 30 minutes each night for a
few weeks.
The Old Gnome and the Sea
Fish from any school, you will complete this one doing Outland Angler and Scavenger.
The Fishing Diplomat
Catch any fish from Stormwind and Orgrimmar. Cross faction only need to sneak into the
other city through brute force (soul stone or corpse run if you're in a hurry)
Mr. Pinchy's Magical Crawdad Box
I'll sum this one up very easily: fish from Highland Mixed Schools above Allerian Stronghold
in Terokkar Forest until you catch Mr. Pinchy (reported 1/500 chance) and then pray (over 6
days) that one of his three wishes gives you the Magical Crawdad Pet (8% chance). There is
tons more hearsay on this that you can read while you're fishing, if you really want the
achievement, head to Terokkar Forest and start fishing from Highland Mixed Schools, then
start doing tons more research to avoid the boredom.
Old Man Barlowned
Old Man Barlo is the Fishing Dailies NPC in Outland just north and east of Shattrath.
Complete his 5 quests. Since you get a random one every day this will take at least 5 days
to complete and possibly MUCH longer.

The Lurker Above

Head to Serpentshrine Cavern in Zangarmarsh with an Elixir of Water Walking and
something that will slow your fall. You need both of these, even at level 80, because once
you break the water's surface you will get attacked by tons of fish and die. You need about
300 effective Fishing Skill to catch him. Any class specific ability will work for slow fall, or a
parachute type cloak or if you can't depend on either of those bring several Noggenfogger
Elixirs and hope for the "You Feel Light..." effect.

You will accomplish this achievement while working on the others or simply leveling fishing,
1000 fish isn't a lot.
The following achievements are not required for Accomplished Angler:
Old Ironjaw
Ironjaw is a rare catch from inside Ironforge. If you're Horde, you're going to need to sneak
into Ironforge and find a spot to fish where you won't get caught (at least not too often).

Old Crafty
Crafty is a rare catch from anywhere inside Orgrimmar. There used to be a great exploit,
but it was fixed in patch 3.0.9, so I won't tell you about it :p. You'll need to find a hidden
spot in Orgrimmar to catch this guy. Luckily it's not required for Accomplished Angler.

Fishing Dailies
There are 5 Daily Quests in the Outland which start at Old Man Barlo northeast of Shattrath.
You receive a random reward from a Bag of Fishing Treasures for completing these quests.
Among the notable drops are: 75% Sharpened Fish Hook (+100 Fishing Lure), 2% Recipe:
Captain Rumsey's Lager (needed for the Cooking meta-achievement), 2% Spun Truesilver
Fishing Line (+3 Fishing Pole Enchant), 1% Noble's Monocle (A rare head piece that can be
wore by anyone, does not bind, I want one!), and 1% Weather-Beaten Fishing Hat (see
gear list above).
Bait Bandits
Fish in Terokkar Rivers until you catch a Blackfin Darter.
Crocolisks in the City
Fish in either Orgrimmar or Stormwind until you catch a Baby Crocolisk.
Felblood Fillet
Fish in the Pools of Aggonar in Hellfire Peninsula until you catch a Monstrous
Felblood Snapper.

 Fish in Zangarmarsh catching Bloated Barbed Gill Trout, open them for Giant
Freshwater Shrimp.
The One That Got Away
Fish in the lakes of Nagrand for the World's Largest Mudfish (make sure
you're minimap says you're on the lake).
There are 5 Daily Quests in the Northrend, added in Patch 3.1. They start at Marcia Chase
at the Fountain in Dalaran. There rewards are similar to the ones from Outland except they
tend to be a bit more powerful. There's a chance to get Recipe: 2% Captain Rumsey's
Lager, 2% Strand Crawler (rare pet), 2% Weather-Beaten Hat, 5% an Unusual Compass
(novelty item) and 25% for some Glow Worms (+100 1 hour lure). There are 2 rare fishing
poles (1/200 chance to drop): Bone Fishing Pole and Jeweled Fishing Pole, see the Fishing
Gear section above for more information on how those poles compare to others. There's a
very very small chance that you receive an epic gem such as a Runed Stormjewel (+23
spell power), but don't count on it.
Blood is Thicker
Head to Borean Tundra and kill a beast, this will cover you in blood (a buff).
Walk into fishable water and a Fishing Pool will spawn that you can catch
your 5 Bloodtooth Frenzy from.
Dangerously Delicious
Fish 10 Terrorfish from anywhere in Wintergrasp.
Jewel Of The Sewers
Head to the Underbelly of Dalaran (the sewers) and fish out Corroded
Jewelry.
Monsterbelly Appetite
Fly south from Dalaran past Wyrmcrest Temple and into the North Sea,
there are some pillars you can cast off of. Make sure your minimap says you
are in The North Sea and you will eventually catch a Severed Arm.
The Ghostfish
Head to the center of Sholazar Basin and fish up a Phantom Ghostfish, eat
it immediately.

Cooking
Just like Fishing, Cooking is best leveled together with Fishing. If you only cook your way to
the 400s you will need to farm a lot of meat from places all over the world. This isn't a big
deal, but you could be fishing off a dock, collecting the same needed materials while at the
same time leveling your Fishing skill.

Cooking Trainers
There are Cooking Trainers (often called Cooks or Chefs) hidden in the back of most Inns.
The main Outland Cooking Train is Jack Trapper in Lower City in Shattrath.

Leveling Cooking
Keep in mind it's much easier to level Cooking at the same time as Fishing, so if you haven't
leveled fishing already I strongly recommend you do. But in case you're not interested in
Fishing and just want to Cook your way to level 450 here's a step-by-step guide how to do
it.
Levels 1-50
You can buy Mild Spices and Simple Flour from any Cooking Supplier. Stringy Wolf Meat and
Chunks of Boar Meat can be farmed in any level 1-10 starting area.

Levels 50-150
You can find Bears in Ashenvale, Bloodmyst Isle, Darkshore, Dun Morogh, Elywnn Forest,
Hillsbrad, Loch Modan and Silverpine Forest. You'll find Clam Meat off Murlocs near the
waters of Westfall, Redridge, Ashenvale, and Azuremyst Isle.

Levels 150-225
You can find Raptors in Wetlands, Stranglethorn Vale and Arathi Highland for Raptor Eggs
and Raptor Flesh.

Levels 225-300
You can get Giant Eggs off Owls or Carrion Birds in Blasted Land, Felwood, Tanaris,
Owlbeasts in Hinterlands and Wintergrasp. Bear Flank drops off the Angerclaw Grizzlies and
Bears in Felwood, Grizzlys in Western Plaguelands and Maulers/Bears in Wintergrasp.
Sandworm Meat is collected off the same mobs killed during the prequest to earn the recipe
(Dredge Strikers and Crushers)

Levels 300-350
Ravager Flesh can be farmed off the Ravagers in Hellfire Peninsula (probably the easiest)
and Blade's Edge Mountains. Clefthoof Meat and Talbuk Venision can be gathered from the
Clefthoofs and Talbuks in Nagrand.

Levels 350-400
Shoveltusks are found only in Howling Fjord, the best spot is west and north of the Ember
Clutch (western side of the zone). Rhino Meat is best farmed in Borean Tundra north of
Warsong Hold.

Levels 400-450
The recipes here were selected to avoid the need for Northern Spices. You can craft a ton of
other stuff but it all requires at least 1 Northern Spice per craft. If you choose to cook up
things with Northern Spices then you can select any of the recipes you learn by turning in
Dalaran Cooking Rewards in Dalaran.

There are 300 achievement points available for Cooking, many of them are part of the Hail
to the Chef meta-achievement.
Grand Master Cook
Learn to be a Grand Master Cook (level 350-450 training in Dalaran)
Kickin' It up A Notch
Complete all 4 of the Outland Cooking Quests: Manalicious, Revenge is Tasty, Soup for the
Soul and Super Hot Stew. You can do one of these every day, they start at Rokk in eastern
Shattrath, he will give you one of them randomly.
Second That Emotion
You must eat a Bad Clams, Haunted Herring, Last Week's Mammoth and a Tasty Cupcake.
You can usually find all 4 on the Auction House over a period of a week or so.
Our Daily Bread
Complete all 5 of the Daily Cooking Questsin in Northrend: Infused Mushroom
Meatloaf, Convention at the Lederdemain, Sewer Stew, Cheese for Glowergold and Mustard
Dogs!. You can get one of these at random every day.

Make a batch of 10 Critter Gitter and head to Deeprum Tram. You can find 10 rats in less
than 50 seconds.
Dinner Impossible
Make 5 Great Feasts and serve them up in each of the 5 Battlegrounds.
Captain Rumsey's Lager
You can find this recipe by doing Outland or Northrend Daily Quests. Cook up some Lager
and earn the achievement.

Leveling Fishing & Cooking Together (Ideal)

It's best to level fishing and cooking at the same time. It will be much easier to find the
materials at each step of the way if you just grab your fishing pole and start casting.
Instead of farming meat off beasts you'll find yourself leveling your fishing skill which is
equally as useful later in the game.

Levels 1-225
The best way to get started is to head to either the lake around Bloodhoof Village (Horde) or
Crystal Lake in Elwynn Forest, catch yourself enough Brilliant Smallfish/Longjaw Mud
Snappers to cook your way to level 50. Next you can head back into Orgrimmar/Stormwind
and fish until level 75, this should yield enough Longjaw Mud Snappers to Cook to level 100.
At Cooking Level 100 you can catch and cook Bristle Whisker Catfish in Hillsbrad Foothills.
Once you're fishing is 150 and cooking 175 head to either Shadowprey Village in Desolace
(Horde) or Stormgarde Keep in Arathi Highlands to catch Mithril Head Trout until level 225
for both Cooking and Fishing.

Levels 225-325
The next best place to go is Tanaris, fish off the docks in Steamweedle Port to level your
fishing to 250 and cook the Spotted Yellowtail to level your cooking past 250 (you'll have a
ton). With 250 fishing skill you can head up to Western Plaguelands and catch Sunscale
Salmon and Nightfins to cook your way to 295 (this should max your fishing for now). One
last stop in Eastern Plaguelands at Lake Mereldar to catch some Salmon and cook them up
to reach level 300 Cooking.

Levels 325-450
Head to Outland to learn Master Cooking and Master Fishing. Next up is Zangarmarsh where
you can catch and cook Feltail Delight, Blackened Trout and Blackened Sporefish till level
350 Cooking. Once you're 350 Cooking & Fishing, head to Northrend and learn Grand
Master Cooking & Fishing. You can make it to level 425 cooking Grilled Bonescales and
Pickled Fangtooth from the inland water in Howling Fjord or Grizzly Hills. You can finish off
Cooking & Fishing together collecting fish for Small Feasts from Sholazar Basin.
