Stages of Meiosis Activity

Standards:
2a: Students know meiosis is an early step in sexual reproduction in which the pairs of chromosomes separate and segregate randomly during cell division to
produce gametes containing one chromosome of each type.
2b. Students know only certain cells in a multicellular organism undergo meiosis.
2c: Students know how random chromosome segregation explains the probability that a particular allele will be in a gamete.
Objective: Students will be able to summarize the events that occur during meiosis.
Materials:

Stages of Meiosis handout

scissors
color pencils
gluestick

Instructors Direction:
1. Print Stages of Meiosis handout and images of Meiosis I and II on white paper. (Note: Each page of Meiosis I and II have 2 student copies to save
paper.)
2. Distribute Stages of Meiosis handout and Meiosis I images/description to the students. Students have to cut and organized the stages of Meiosis I in the
correct sequence on the handout paper.
a. Check to make sure that the students matched the correct Meiosis I illustrations with its descriptions. Tell students to follow the coloring
instructions in the box.
b. Students may now glue the meiotic illustrations and description to the handout.
c. Check to make sure that students correctly completed Meiosis I.
3. Pass out Meiosis II images. Students have to cut and organized the stages of Meiosis II in the correct sequence on the handout paper.
a. Check to make sure that the students matched the correct Meiosis II illustrations with its descriptions. Tell students to follow the coloring
instructions in the box.
b. Students may now glue the meiotic illustrations and description to the handout.
c. Check to make sure that students correctly completed Meiosis II.

Description:

A. Cut and paste the description to the correct stage of Meiosis I.

Pairs of homologous chromosomes
move to the equator (center) of
the cell.

Chromosomes gather at the poles of

the cell
Cytoplasm divides, creating 2 cells.

Chromosomes become visible.

Nuclear envelope breaks down.
Crossing over occurs

Homologous chromosome move to

opposite poles of the cell.

B. Color, cut, and paste the pictures to the correct stage of Meiosis I.
