A taste of the job market at Voorhees Middle

Students create rsums to present to professional members of community during mock interviews
By ZANE CLARK
The Sun
Theyre only in eighth grade,
and already some students at
Voorhees Middle School have interviewed for their future careers
sort of.
As part of a new project run by
teachers Marc Del Rossi and
Stacey Tosadori, VMS students
recently learned how to snag
their dream job by creating cover
letters and rsums for their future careers and learning how to
dress for potential job interviews.
With rsums and letters in
hand, those students then dressed
in professional clothes on May 18
and 19 and presented their work
to members of the community
during mock interviews, where
various volunteers grilled the students about their work history,
skills and goals for the future.
According to Tosadori, students were able to pick their college of choice, past activities,
mock work experience and more,
and then members of the community were invited to help give students some practical, real-world
experience.
I think its important for them
to have practice talking about
their strengths and getting realworld experience, and its impor-

Students at Voorhees Middle School got a chance to interview for jobs on May 18 as part of a project
where students created mock rsums, dressed for success, and presented their work to professionals

tant for them to set goals and then
come up with a plan to achieve
those goals, Tosadori said.
Tosadori said the project was
helpful to students because any-

time the students can practice

something theyre going to have
to do in their future, it means
theyll be better prepared for
when that day inevitably arrives.

Tosadori said the experience

might have even already benefited one student interested in a
criminal analyst field who spoke
with an actual criminal analyst

during the mock interviews and

learned of internships available
at her company.
Theres a student who might
have an opportunity for a future
internship based on this project,
which is amazing, Tosadori said.
Just some of the professionals
who helped conduct the mock interviews included an attorney, a
professor from Rutgers University,
a nurse, a psychologist and even a
member of the U.S. Air Force.
Psychologist Carla Tinari said
her advice to the students during
her interviews was for them to
make connections when they go
to college or graduate programs
and to go the extra step and do
more than just what is asked of
them.
Get the internship, work on
the grant, do all the grunt work
that nobody else wants to do, because honestly, thats the stuff
that sets you apart from all the
kids you sat in your lecture hall
with, Tinari said.
Nurse and business owner
Mindy Dahan tried to prepare
students for a tough job market
by telling them to not only create
themselves on paper but to also
create themselves as a personality to help them stand out to interplease see STUDENTS, page 4

annual performance data
School Performance Report Data
outlined, including how last years
PARCC exams affected Easterns rankings
By ZANE CLARK
The Sun
The state Department of Education recently released the
newest School Performance Reports for all public schools in the
state, and this year, data from the
first year of the Partnership for
Assessment of Readiness for College and Career exams was included.
That data and more was outlined at the May 18 meeting of
Eastern Camden County Regional Board of Education by director
of curriculum, instruction and
professional development Robert
Cloutier.
Cloutier said although the

had already reported to the district at a meeting in December, he
again noted that participation
was still the biggest concern for
Eastern.
Cloutier said the participation
rate established by the state for
the English language arts and
math sections of the test was at 95
percent, but Eastern only met a
school-wide participation rate of
54.3 percent for the English portion and a 53 percent participation rate for the math portion.

Their rsums looked awesome, and I think this is a really
good thing for the kids to have to
get them to really realize what it
is to be prepared for the future,
Dahan said.
U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Jesse
Arnstein also praised the work of
the students and said one thing
the students did particularly well
was preparation, which he said
can be rare when conducting certain interviews.
Ive been both an interviewer
and interviewee continuously for
the past 12 years or so, and they
answered the questions and addressed the challenges as well as
the adults Ive spoken with, Arnstein said.

Memorial Day

108 Kings Highway East

Haddonfield, NJ 08033
856-427-0933

Three-day weekend or a return to a traditional day of remembrance?

e re all familiar with Memorial Day. We know that it
is a day set aside to honor
the brave men and women who made
the ultimate sacrifice to protect our
country and the freedom we have.
And we know that it is celebrated on
the last Monday in May, thereby creating a three-day weekend for most.
Maybe it shouldnt be that way.
Back when Memorial Day was first
established during the Civil War era, it
was observed on May 30. It had its own
special day, which, many will argue,
kept the focus on the meaning of the
day.
They have a point.
When one thinks of Memorial Day
these days, its easy to lose focus.
There are Memorial Day sales at

Holiday weekend distractions

Memorial Day shouldnt be about sales
or heading to the beach. It should be
about honoring those who died serving
this country. How do you reflect on
Memorial Day?

stores and the kick-off to summer

sentiment. That people have three
days off often overshadows what the
spirit of Memorial Day is all about.
We dont want to sound completely
negative. Many communities still take
pride in holding a thoughtful, meaningful Memorial Day ceremony
and/or parade. We still see flags displayed. We still see a lot of people take
time to honor those who died serving
our country.
But we also cant help but think that

lumping Memorial Day into a threeday weekend has diminished the

meaning of the day at least somewhat. There are too many distractions.
How many of us have made Memorial
Day weekend plans that have absolutely nothing to do with honoring the
meaning of the day?
Memorial Day should be special. It
should be a time when every American reflects on the sacrifices made on
his or her behalf and takes the time to
pay proper respect. Nothing should
distract from those sentiments.
Will the three-day weekend be replaced with a move back to May 30?
Doubtful. Its going to be up to each individual to cut through the clutter and
honor those who made the ultimate
sacrifice.

The Sun is proud to announce SPJ award winners

By TIM RONALDSON
Executive Editor
In my 11 years with Elauwit Media,
never have I been prouder of the work
weve done than last week, when we received word that we had won six awards in
the New Jersey chapter of the Society of
Professional Journalists annual awards.
The tireless work we put in to bettering
ourselves as professionals and providing
you with the most local news you can find
at the highest quality is all worth it when
we receive praise like we did last week.
Our team consisting of Kristen Dowd,
our managing editor, along with our associate editors Erica Chayes Wida, Brigit
Bauma, Zane Clark and Mike Monostra are
all to be commended whether they were
named as award winners or not for it is
the teamwork they display that allows us to
cover your town as we do.

Erica won first place in the SPJs Wilson Barto Rookie of the Year category.
This marks the second year in a row that
one of our employees has received this
honor, after Zane won the title last year.
Sean Lajoie, who has moved on to a new position with a different company, won second place behind Erica for Rookie of the
Year.
Mike captured our other first-place title,
in the Sports Reporting category for a
story on the Moorestown High School girls
lacrosse team.
Mike also took home a second-place finish in the Photojournalism Sports category for a set of photos he took of the
Shawnee High School girls soccer team
winning South Jersey Group IV, and a
third-place finish in the Feature Reporting
category for a story on Mt. Laurels Eric
Ebo Eberling, who passed away in 2013
at the age of 17 from cancer.

Our final award this year went to Erica

again. She won second place in the Photojournalism Feature category for shots she
took at the Princeton Rec Departments annual Cardboard Canoe Race.
To view the full stories and photos that
won the awards, please visit our website,
www.elauwitmedia.com/news.
Every day, I am proud of the work our
employees do to help further our mission
of providing the best local news to the residents of every town we cover.
But I would be remiss if I didnt give a
heartfelt thank you to everyone in the
community who helps us reach that goal
by being our partners by answering the
phone when we have questions, by reaching out to us when you have a news tip.
Without that cooperation and interest in
your town newspaper, The Sun wouldnt
be what it is today! Congratulations again
to all our award winners!

advantage of the two-hour test
window, Cloutier said.
In turn, Cloutier said academic
achievement scores are also a
concern because of the low participation rate.
On a school-wide level, Cloutier said only 38 percent of students met or exceeded the academic expectation in the English
portion of the test, and only 33
percent of students met or exceeded the academic expectation
in the math portion of the test.
In terms of other indicators
that have been traditionally in the
report, Cloutier staid Easterns

scores are holding steady with

very little change.
For the category of the report
dealing with Eastern readying
students for college and careers,
Cloutier said the district was at 80
percent of students participating
in SAT or ACT tests, which is the
state target.
Cloutier said the district also
had a slight increase in the number of students scoring higher
than 1550 on SAT tests, and the
districts graduation rate continues to be strong, increasing from
92 percent to 94 percent.
Our raw data is actually improving, so as you can see, our
rankings may have gone down in
certain areas but our raw data is
doing very well, he said.
Throughout the report, Clouti-

er said the district is compared to

peer schools the state has determined are similar to Eastern
based on demographics. While
those rankings change every year,
Cloutier said the district has now
been compared to several schools
such as Kingsway Regional High
School and Washington Township High School for several years
in a row.
This matters because how our
rankings to peer schools are really depend on which schools we
are being compared to year to
year, Cloutier said.
The full school performance report for Eastern and other
schools is available online
through the state Department of
Education at www.state.nj.us/education/.

Memorial Day observance at

Camden County Veterans Cemetery
By Freeholder Deputy Director Edward McDonnell
Before you fire up
the grill or set up
lawn chairs this
Memorial
Day
Weekend, join us
in remembering
that this holiday
has been designated by this grateful nation to honor
our
heroes.
Throughout the history of our great
country our Veterans have fought
and died for us all.
Each year, in addition to marking
the graves of Camden Countys Veterans with a sea of American Flags,
the Freeholder Boards Office of
Veterans Affairs hosts a Memorial
Day observance.
This years event will be held at
the Camden County Veterans
Cemetery at Harleigh on May 28, at
10:00 a.m. rain or shine. Parking is
available at the Jerrothia Riggs Education Center located at 1656
Kaighn Avenue in Camden City.
The Freeholder Board created the
Camden County Veterans Cemetery
in 2007 in response to a request from
local veterans who asked for a dedicated burial place close to home.
The Board made it a priority to develop a final resting place for our
heroes who have valiantly served
this country through a selfless commitment to our nation.
We chose Harleigh as the location
for this hallowed ground for its
beauty and its historic significance.
The eight-acre park-like setting is
situated on a bluff overlooking the
scenic Cooper River, on the border
of Camden and Collingswood. We
have invested our resources into
making this plot of land significant
for eternity.
Established in 1885, Harleigh
Cemetery is currently the final rest-

ing place of hundreds

of veterans, including
more than 300 who
served in the Civil War.
It is also the final resting place of poet Walt
Whitman, four United
States Senators, and
generations of Camden County families.
Providing a beautiful
final resting place is one way to
show our appreciation. Camden
County is proud to respect our
30,000 veterans with a resting place
that reflects the honor and dignity
they deserve. The Freeholder Board
wants this space to be a place where
our military can reflect on their
service and honor the men and
women that came before them.
Veterans who honorably served
their country as an active-duty or
reserve member are eligible for a
gravesite at no charge. There are
one-time fees for interment and perpetual maintenance. Spouses of veterans interred in the cemetery are
eligible for a discount on adjacent
grave spaces. The 800-square-foot
Harleigh Cemetery Chapel is also
available to accommodate a proper
military service.
Veterans who want more information about the Camden County Veterans Cemetery can call the
Camden County Office of Veterans
Affairs at 1-800-464-VETS, Harleigh
Cemetery at (856) 963-3500, or can
ask their local funeral director.
If you have any other questions
about County services, please call
me at (856) 225-5458 or email me at
mcdonnell@camdencounty.com.

Mayor Mignogna remembers friend

Larry Virgilio, who gave life in Vietnam
Memorial Day evokes different
feelings in all of us. For many, it
is the unofficial beginning of
summer. For others, it is a day for
barbecues, picnics and parades.
For all, it should be a day to honor
those Americans who gave their
lives for our country. For me, Memorial Day holds a memory I
have shared in this column before
and I feel the need to share it yet
again.
Larry Virgilio was my friend.
He lived down the street in the
Fairview section of Camden
where I grew up. Even though he
was older than me and most of
my other friends, he always
seemed to find time for us. He was
usually the "steady quarterback"
in our football games on the Yorkship Schoolyard.
I was only 8 years old. My mind
was focused on playing ball, riding bikes and watching cartoons.
The Vietnam War was not a concept I could comprehend. When
Larry left to fight for our country
in Vietnam, I assumed he would
PSA

be home soon.
In the summer of 1967, like all
other summers growing up, my
family rented a home for the
week in Wildwood. Some of my
most vivid childhood memories
occurred in Wildwood, most of
them fond. But one vacation
morning, I walked into the
kitchen to find my mom and dad
sitting at the table, tears falling
from my mother's eyes with a
newspaper in her hand. She told
me that my friend, Larry, had
been killed in Vietnam at the tender age of 25.
Suddenly, the concept of war
took on a whole new meaning.
In 1988, I made my first visit to
the National Vietnam Veterans
Memorial in Washington, D.C.
Seeing "The Wall" for the first
time was quite an emotional experience. Some visitors knelt in
prayer, some left tokens of remembrance
while
others
sketched the names of their loved
ones onto a piece of paper. I
walked slowly along the memorial and, on Panel 23E Line 117, the
name "Lawrence J. Virgilio" was
etched into the black granite.
Though only .53 inches in height,
the letters spoke volumes.
I sketched my friend's name on
a small piece of paper and mailed
it to his family. I included a note
assuring them that Larry was
still in my thoughts and that I was
honored to be the friend of a true

hero.
Larry's
late brother,
Nick Virgilio,
was a worldrenowned
Haiku poet.
Following
Larry's
death, Nick
dedicated
much of his
poetry to the
Michael
memory of
Mignogna
Larry and
other fallen MAYORS MESSAGE
heroes:
"flag-covered coffin:
the shadow of the bugler slips
into the grave"
"my gold star mother
and father hold each other and
the folded flag"
Honor our fallen heroes by enjoying the barbecues, parades and
picnics. Honor them by embracing your family. Honor them by
cherishing your freedom. They
would have wanted it that way.
The Annual Kirkwood Memorial Day Parade will begin at 11
a.m. at the Carriage House
Restaurant and end at the war
memorial on Burnt Mill Road adjacent to the Kirkwood Fire Station. There will be a memorial
ceremony at 11:30 a.m. with refreshments following. Special
thanks to Terri and Vaughn Vandegrift for their help in organizing and sponsoring this community tradition. Join us in honoring those who gave the ultimate
sacrifice for our freedom.
The Camden County Board of
Elections controls voting locations in Voorhees Township and
throughout the county. Several
polling places will be changing
beginning in the upcoming Primary Election on June 7. The voting locations that will be in effect
can be viewed at the Voorhees
Township
website
www.voorheesnj.com. If you have
any questions about your polling
place or voter registration information, contact our municipal
clerk at 856-429-7757 or at
clerk@voorheesnj.com.

YMCA shares swimming safety tips

According to the Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention,
about 10 people die from unintentional drowning every day. Of
those 10, two are children aged 14
or younger. In an effort keep children safe in and around the water,
the YMCA of Burlington and
Camden Counties offers important safety tips for all ages:
Never swim alone. Only swim
where there is a lifeguard on duty.
It only takes one inch of water to
cover a childs mouth and
nose, potentially causing drowning.
Only swim in supervised, designated areas. In the little time it
takes to cross a room or pool deck
to grab a towel, a child can slip
silently under the surface of the
water, even while wearing a float-

ing device.
Safeguard pool area for children. Keep pool gates locked and
furniture away from fences to ensure a child cant climb over.
Make sure to use gates that are
self-closing and self-latching.
When inside the pool area, keep
toys at a safe distance from the
edge of the pool.
Be prepared in case of emergency. Accidents can happen in
the blink of an eye. Its important
to take the time to learn life-saving skills like CPR and have a
phone handy in the pool area. The
Y offers first aid, CPR and AED
training, as well as lifeguard certification courses.
Maintain appropriate lifesaving
equipment. Keep a life preserver
and rope in the pool area, hang-

ing from the fence so they are accessible but not in the way.
Learning to swim is not only
a great way to stay healthy its
also a critical life safety skill,
said Tim Kerrihard, president
and CEO of the YMCA of
Burlington and Camden Counties. Kids drown because of a
lack of understanding about
water safety or a place to practice
it. Our goal at the Y is to help
change that.
This summer, the Y will be
hosting Swim Safe, a program
which allows local children to
learn life-saving swimming and
water safety skills.
For more information on the
Ys swim lessons and summer
special, call (856) 231-9622 or visit
www.ymca-bc.org.
