NEW GENERAL BACKGROUND

I still remember ,Years ago, On my way to visit my grandparents at the age of 15,
we found the road was devastated due to a 700 meter stretch landslide and Sadly,
that year I couldnt visit my grandparents! Knowing I was worried that this problem
had no solution at all, my physics teacher told me about soil mechanics and that
there is a separate field in civil engineering where I would find my answers. On
account of my curiosity, I surfed about landslides and studied its protective
measures and gradually generated an interest in the field and hence decided to opt
for civil engineering. Presently, exposed to almost 70% curriculum, after studying
structural analysis, hydrogeology, geotechnical engineering, traffic engineering,
building materials and construction etc., and using software GSA(GeoStructural
Analysis), AutoCAD 2015, STAAD Pro Vi8, ABAQUS and languages C/C++, Python,
FORTAN, I have generated a deep interest in pursuing geotechnical engineering as a
field of research, another research interest of mine are building construction and
hydrogeology. which strengthened my communication skills and taught me the
importance of teamwork and punctuality in life.

General skills, background knowledge and interests

When I was 15, spring season brought an incident that completely changed my life.
Road leading to my village had a massive landslide, about 700 meters of road went
down with huge part of mountain. I couldnt visit my grandparents that year! I was
worried if such a big problem had solution? To this my physics teacher told me
about soil and that there is a separate discipline in civil engineering where I could
find my answers. To my curiosity I kept surfing about landslide and its preventive
measures and slowly generated an interest in the field and hence decided to opt for
civil engineering. Presently, exposed to almost 70% of curriculum, after studying
structural analysis, hydrogeology, geotechnical engineering, traffic engineering,
building materials and construction etc., and getting knowledge of AutoCAD 2015,
STAAD Pro Vi8, ABAQUS and SAP-2000, C/C++, Python, FORTAN. I have a deep
interest in pursuing geotechnical engineering as a field of research and another
research interest of mine are building construction and hydrogeology. which has
strengthened my communication skills and taught me the importance of teamwork
and punctuality in life.

Research Rationale
Brilliance of civil engineering I find, is in its plethora of practical applications. I belong to a village
region in India and to summarize life there from an engineers perspective, I would say there is a huge
scope in Geo-Structural innovation.

Right since the beginning of my undergraduate study, civil engineering has fascinated me with its wide
variety of applications. The subjects that interest me include geotechnical Engineering, hydrogeology and

building construction. I am eager to find out more about the applications of these subjects in civil
engineering.
To get in-depth knowledge, I have read journals like Canadian Geotechnical Journal, The Journal of

Civil Structural Health Monitoring (JCSHM), The International Journal of Concrete Structures
and Materials (IJCSM), Journal of Hydro-environment Research" etc.
I was a project fellow in Reliability Analysis of Slope stability using Monte-Carlo
Simulations under Dr. RK Sharma and crack propagation in concrete and old structure damage
monitoring and assessment program under Dr. HK Vinayak and an IEDC (Innovations and
Entrepreneurship Development Committee) project on PET structures on green
fuel which have made these subjects as my fields of interest in research as my career.

My decision to pursue summer internship in Canada is underscored by my desire to be a part of worlds

leading research institutions. Canadian system has the best to offer in the whole world. If given an
opportunity to be a part of that intellectually stimulating environment, I am sure my talents will be put to
optimal use.
