Facebook is King

Facebook has beaten Google, MSN and eBay to become the most used web brand____
the UK. The social networking phenomenon accounted for 12.7 per cent of UK internet-
related time last month - up by more than 5 per cent on April 2008, research by Nielsen
Online showed.

The amount of time spent on Facebook rose____ 3.8 billion minutes to 6.2billion minutes
last month compared with the same period last year.

Facebook was founded ____2004 and has since become the UK's most popular website
It was followed____ MSN/Windows Live, with its Messenger and Hotmail services,
which had a 9.2 per cent share of time, representing about 4.5billion minutes.

Despite being the dominant search engine, Google was in third place with a 5.3 per cent
share - a little more than 2.5billion minutes.
Also in the top ten were eBay, Yahoo, AOL Media Network, the BBC, YouTube,
Microsoft, and Apple.
Facebook is one of the major reasons people are spending more time online, claims the
research.

Alex Burmaster, Communications Director, EMEA, Nielsen Online said: 'The Internet is
a complex and varied ecosystem and I think most people would be surprised by just how
much time is accounted ____ by a relatively few brands who, in turn, are increasing their
share of the pie.

'Between just the two of them, the two most heavily used web brands - Facebook and
MSN/Windows Live - account for almost 11 billion of the 48 billion minutes that Britons
spend online.
'That’s over one in every five minutes and highlights just how competitive the online
space is for both publishers and advertisers when it comes to capturing consumer
attention.'
Mr Burmaster added: 'The major players have had a pretty good year in terms of the
increasing amount of time people spend ___ their websites and applications.
'This is good news for the online industry as it attempts to attract the big brand
advertisers by providing a more meaningful platform to engage consumers.

Facebook Reunites Long-Lost Father, Son (2010)

Student A

Most people scour Facebook in search of childhood friends, high school pals and ex-
girlfriends.

But Andy Spiers-Corbett of Great Britain took to the popular social networking site last
month in search of his long-lost father. And he found him.

"'There's been a big part missing for so long but now everything is all right," Andy said
of his reunion with his father Graham Corbett after 37 years apart, according to the Daily
Mail .

Thirty-nine-year-old Andy was just two when he last saw his dad. Graham left home after
he divorced his son's mother. Now 61-years-old, Graham called losing track of his son
"One of the worst decisions I ever made."

Glossary
Scour :to look very carefully,
Pals: friends
Long-lost: missing
Reunion: to meet again after a long time, like a school reunion.

Both men spent decades trying to track each down – even hiring private detectives -- but
in the end it turned out father and son were only a mouse-click away.

Two weeks ago, Andy typed his dad's name into Facebook and instantly recognized his
father.

"There were about 15 Graham Corbetts that came up but I saw this picture and my heart
just started pounding. I knew it was him. It was like looking at myself when I'm 60."

Andy sent a message and waited. Days later Graham responded: "Hello son."

The father and son have since shared a teary reunion at Graham's home, where Andy
discovered he has two half-brothers and a half-sister, as well as nieces and nephews.

"There were a few tears shed," Graham, a former civil servant, told the Deccan Herald .
"I was in bits when he came to see me. Tears were shed but now we're making up for lost
time. I'm so happy."

Glossary:

To track someone down: To search carefully and finally find someone

A mouse-click away: easy to find on the internet
Pounding: beating very quickly
A teary reunion: A meeting that was full of tears and people crying (in this case of
happiness)
