Ideas for phonics activities

Mini Books
Lesson Plan:
Prep: Teacher hides sounds around the class on flashcards. Sts have to find the sounds the
teacher says.
Main activity: Teacher provides a mini book to each group with letters in. Students find and
stick the pictures that relate to the sounds in the mini book.
Consolidate: Matching sounds and words to the pictures.
Activities:
*running dictation. Teacher posts a written passage on the wall, one for each group. The sts
run up one by one to their passage. They then memorise a part, run back to their group and
tell the group. This is written into the mini book. Then the next student runs to the passage
and so on until their mini book is complete.
*Guess the phonemes: Students each have a mini book with sounds in. Teacher will quickly
show or flip a flashcard and the pupils have to turn to the correct page in the mini book.
Example teacher flashes a picture of a cat. Students have to find the /k/ sound.
Play dough
Lesson Plan
Prep: Rub the sand letters
Main activity:Each student has someplay dough. Teacher sounds aloud a sound e.g. /s/. Sts
have to make the sound with their play dough.
Consolidation: Worksheet. Matching pictures with sounds.
Activities
*Form the sounds, letters words etc the teacher says. (can be done as group, pair or individual
work)
*Students make objects and the other student has to guess the beginning sound(pair or group
work)Or other students can make the beginning sound.
*Can be used for spelling or a sound bee.
Dice
Lesson plan
Prep: Teacher hides sounds around the class on flashcards. Sts have to find the sounds the
teacher says.
Main activity: Students divided into groups of 4. Roll the dice with pictures. Blend the sounds
e.g. /p/ /a/ /n/. One star is given for the correct sounds and words given. Two stars given for
the correct blending of sounds.

Consolidation: Fill in the missing letters/sounds.


Activities
*blending and segmenting
*forming words from sounds given when dice is thrown
*construct sentences with sounds/ words from dice
*match sounds with the pictures (2 dice needed one with letters and one with pictures for
each group)
*To use with a snakes and ladders game
*matching sounds to objects.
Fan
Lesson plan
Prep: Teacher says a word from a picture card. Students guess the initial sound.
Main activity: Teacher puts boxes around room with parts of the fan in. Teacher says a sound
and Sts have to go to the correct box and find the sound, or, each group has a box with all
parts of the fan in and look in their own box.
Consolidation: Match sounds to graphemes

Activities:
*Sts stand in 3 lines. The first 3 students have fans and segment and blend words. They then
go to the back and the next Sts step forward.
*Sts segment and blend words using fans
*guess and hold up phonemes on the fan, from either flashcard or an action done by the
teacher.
Flashcards
Lesson Plan
Prep: Telephone game. Divide class into 4/5/ groups. Have them get into rows. At the back of
each row have a box with letters. Have the 1 st student in each row come forward and sound
out a letter to them. They go back and whisper the sound to the next person in line. The last
sts goes to the box and finds the sound and holds it up. Rotate.
Main activity: Find your partner. Hand-out letters and pictures to Sts. They must go around
saying only the first sound of the word or letter until they find their partner. When they have
found their partner, present pictures and sounds to class.
Consolidation: Worksheet. Which one doesnt belong? On the board draw 3 pictures. Ask sts
to say which one doesnt belong. Cross out picture that doesnt belong. Hand out worksheet
with same activities.
