You will be picked up from your accommodation between 08:00 - 08:30 by a car rental agent
and taken a few minutes drive to the car rental office where you will sign the rental agreement
and receive the rental car. After you receive the car leave Reykjavik at the eastern outskirts.
Take road 1 to the south and head for Selfoss. Cross the plateau Hellisheii, with a lot of
geothermal activity and plumes of steam rising from the ground. Numerous boreholes have
been drilled on Hellisheii in the last years for hot water and steam, some of the cleanest
energy available. Stop at Hellisheii Geothermal Power plant where natural hot water and
steam pressure from the ground is used for generating electricity. You can enjoy an optional
tour through the power station and learn about the eco-friendly geothermal energy. Drive to
the village Hverageri at the foot of the mountain, east of the plateau, where geothermal
water is used to heat greenhouses for cultivation of decorative flowers. Hverageri and the
town Selfoss, a little further east, suffered considerable damage during the major earthquakes
that shook Iceland in May, 2008. Large hot springs and mud pools were created in
Hverageri. Continue on 1 along the south shore and see the Saga Centre at Hvolsvllur.
When reaching Eyjafjll district at the foot of the infamous Eyjafjallajkull glacier and a
volcano, stop at the waterfall Seljalandsfoss, where it is possible to walk behind the waterfall
in summer. The waterfall Skgafoss is a little further east and dont miss the interesting Folk
Museum at Skgar, close to the waterfall. The glaciers Eyjafjallajkull and Mrdalsjkull are
towering above. On March 20th 2010, a volcanic eruption started on Fimmvruhls, a
mountain ridge between the glaciers, Eyjafjallajkull and Mrdalsjkull. The eruption on
Fimmvruhls lasted a couple of weeks. After this eruption came to an end a bigger and
more powerful eruption started underneath the nearby icecap of Eyjafjallajkull Glacier. This
eruption came to an end on 23. May 2010, after causing serious disturbance to air traffic in
the northern hemisphere. Underneath the icecap of Mrdalsjkull is Katla, one of Icelands
most dangerous volcano. Make a short detour on 221 to the glacier Slheimajkull where you
will go on a guided Glacier Walk departing at 14:00 please be there about 30 minutes prior.
Return to road 1 and continue to the east. Take 218 to Dyrhlaey nature reserve and a
nesting colony of numerous seabirds in summer. The promontory at Dyrhlaey is a massive
natural arch, carved by the relentless pounding of the winds and surf with rich birdlife in
summer. Return to road 1 and a little further east, take 215 to Reynisdrangar, with spectacular
coast and beautiful rock formations.
