Fall 2011
Instructor:

Dr. Joni Nunnery Shreve

Office: 3190 Patrick F. Taylor Hall, jnunner@lsu.edu
Office Hours MWF 12:30-1:20; Other times by Appt

Course Objective:
In this course you will learn how to be consumers of information so as to
make informed decisions and to assess the decisions made by others. This course
emphasizes the basic understanding of how data are organized, summarized and
described (descriptive statistics) and how this information is used for managerial decision
making. The course will also provide the basic framework for conducting statistical
hypothesis testing (inferential statistics), carry out such tests in the context of single and
multiple populations (including z- and t-tests, ANOVA, and regression analysis), and
show the importance of such tests in decision making. The goal of this course is to
broaden the range of your intuition and to enable you to think.

Academic Policies:

Your final grade will be made up of the following points for a total of 440
points: 3 tests and a Comprehensive Final @ 100 pts each, 40 pts
homework

Final Exam is mandatory and that grade will replace the lowest of the 3
test grades

Sample Tests and Formulae Sheets will be posted on Moodle. Solutions to

the sample tests will be provided during class on designated review days
(Solutions MAY NOT be posted!).

MyStatLab homework will be assigned weekly (to be discussed in class).

Grading Scale: 90-100 A, 80-89 B, 70-79 C, 60-69 D, 0-59 F

Test Policies:

Tests will be based on lectures, textbook, and homework material. The

tests will be closed book; but you will be provided a formula sheet.
No makeup tests will be given. If you miss a test, the comprehensive
final exam grade will replace that of the missed test. In others words,
your final exam will be count twice. The final exam is mandatory!
You will be given at least one week notice for each test.
Tests are given through the testing center. You must register for each test
on the testing center website once it is made available.
Picture ID is required for ALL tests.
No sharing calculators.
When taking test at the test center, be sure to recheck your work before
submitting test questions to be graded.
Tests will be given over a three-day period. We will not have class on one
of the class days that falls in that period. (Please see the calendar for those
OFF days)
There will be one class before each test for reviewing a sample test and
answering questions. (see Calendar for test and review dates)
I will have office hours before each test and will answer all emails.
Because of the large number of emails during testing, I may miss your
email questions; please feel free to email me again.
After the test days have been completed, each student can review their test
during office hours.

General Class Policies:

Bring book, calculator, and notes to each class for easy reference.

Homework problems will be assigned for each class; these are strongly
recommended in order to master the material. Solutions will be provided
at the beginning of the next class day. List of problems is on Moodle.

You are expected to be present during class time. If you must be late,
please feel free to come to class anyway. Youd be surprised how much a
few minutes will help!

You are still responsible for missed lecture notes or getting assigned
problems. Note that a missed class is not a reason for being late for a
MyStatLab homework assignment.

Those students taking tests through the Office of Disability Services

should contact me as soon as possible in order to make special
arrangements. (You will not be given extra time if you choose to take
the exam during the regularly scheduled class time.)

All cases of cheating will be submitted to the DEAN OF STUDENTS for

resolution. See website http://appl003.lsu.edu/slas/judicialaffairs.nsf/index
for a description of cheating and plagiarism and consequences.

My Policy: I am here to provide some appreciation and a more positive perspective for
the practice of statistics. I ask that you take the opportunity to ask questions; you will be
asking a question which most students have as well. At any point, if you feel that you are
falling behind, please come see me. Most times students understand the material with
additional individual discussion.
