Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ

It is time for another newsletter.

Not much has happened during

the p.'ist few months "but what did occur was significant. We praise the Lord
for Kls guidance and care.
We had an interview with the Canadian, Consul in Chicago.

We were

told that we cannot immigrate into Canada because we will not have a Canadian

salary. (The laws have changed since the Dilleys entered Canada over three
years ago.) However, they will grant us a visa for a period of one year to

begin our mission work in Montreal. The visa will begin June 1, 1976 and
end May 31, 1977*
visa.

At that time we will have to reapply for another year's

We have had our physical examinations, so once the immigration office

in Ottawa, Ontario approves them we will receive our visas.

We are very excited about being accepted by the Canadian governm-nti

We believe the yearly visas, instead of immigration, to be God's will in the

matter.

He knows what is best and we are thankful that we are His and that

we work for Him.

Our maJpE^concern. is support. Our supporters have increased in

number, but we still have half of our estimated amount to raise yet.

The

immigration officer in Chicago told us that when we enter Canada we will nned

to have letters from our supporters stating the amount each will supply every
month.

If the total of the pledged amounts seems inadequate to the border

officer, we will not be allowed to enter.

We have been praying for more

supporters and sufficient financial aid so that we nay do the Lord's work

We ask that you be praying the same.

At present, other than raising support, we are both working here

We are looking forward to May when Rhonda will receive her A.B.

degree in Christian Education from L.C.C. Then if the Lord wilis, we will
enter Canada June 1. Praise the Lord! Rhonda just turned twenty-three and
^teve will bo twenty-five this month. We are hoping this helps on the car
insurance rates, as Montreal has the highest rates in North America!

Our hope is that our next letter to you will be to inform you

that all is ready for Montreal and we are on our way. Thank you for your
continued support. Please keep praying for us as we pray for you.

10 miles or 30 minutes from downtown Montreal. Ihe opportunities for evangelism

in this part of the island seem favorable and we are encouraged. After getting

we are finally beginning the job of "being missionaries." Steve has had opportun

a few will not accept the full gospel.

Family tension is one culprit and

They themselves were immersed into Jesus

Christ but they feel they cannot say it is essential for others. We've been able to

call on these Christians and we see hope for the situation. Our goal is to continue
talking with them and bring them back into the fellowship. We've also been active
with the Dilley's Bible Club. Attendance is holding steady. Some of -the older
girls are asking seirious questions about the gospel. We praise God for their soulsearching.

There is a major drawback involved in evangelizing in this area. People

do not like for others to just "drop in" on them.

Before we could call on any of the

Christians here, we had to set up an appointment. It seems that most people are
accustomed to this.

Also, before anyone can go door-to-door for any reason they must have

a license or permit to do so. The same goes for distributing tracts#

The Dilleys

Most Quebec people claim ties wiidi a church. However, the majority either do not
attend church or they seldom attend.

Many people are "fed up" with religion, al-

thou^ they have nothing against Jesus Christ. We believe this can be an advantage

for us but first we have to get a foot in the door. We read recently in the religion
section of the Montreal Star. Montreal's major English newspaper, an article telling

of three congregations of the United Church starting Wednesday ni^t services# Many

people were leaving the city on weekends so these churches were setting up extra
services for those not present on Sundays. We do not know if this has been success

ful. We've learned that some churches do not offer Sunday School and one family we
talked with told us their church closed down for the summer and did not hold services
until after Labor Day. We hope this gives you an idea of the situation. We do not

want people to think we are just another "church." We want them to come to Christ,
not another brand of religion.

Newspaper ads have worked to some extent but are very expensive, and
meeting in the Y.M.C.A. has attracted one family to inquire about the Church. But

much of our work must be geared to personal contacts. We have become acquainted with
a few people so we hope to build on these friendships and share with them ihe gospel
of Christ. If you have any suggestions on how we can meet people and tell them the

know.

Please, continue to pray for us. _ Ask the Lord to bring us into, contact

with receptive people. Pray for the yo.ung people in the Bible Club as they study
God's Word and apply it to "thei^elves. Pray for their parents as well that they may
be receptive. Please pray for those who have pulled away from the fellowship, that
they may soon gra^p the full impact of God's Word. Please be piaying for Rhonda as
she is now into her eighth month of pregnancy and for our child as well.

for working out our visa problems too. Prayer is one of the most powerful tools
God has given us. If you will pray with us regarding these things we are confident
God will answer positively.

the preaching of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery which was
kept secret for long ages but is now disclosed and throu^ the prophetic writings

about the obedience of faith - to the only wise God be glory for evermore ibrou^

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christi

Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ,

(1 Corinthians 1: 3). We intended to get this letter mailed the first of this week
but here it is, the day after Thanksgiving already. We hope your Thanksgiving was
a blessed one.

We all have much to be thankful for.

We Imagine you have heard of the provincial elections here in Quebec

recently.

Most of what we know about the situation comes from television and the

newspaper. In October the premier of Quebec called for a general election.

At

that time the Liberal party was in power with 102 of 110 seats in their assembly.

After a month of campaigning, the elections took place on November 15*

The Parti

Quebecois, the Liberals* strongest opponents, won 69 seats in the assembly and thus
became the party to lead Quebec. The leader of the party is Rene Levesque and he
has become the new premier.
office.

Many people strongly wanted the Liberal party out of

Therefore, since the Parti Quebecois was their strongest opponent, many

people voted for that party to insure their defeat.

The Parti Quebecois has been

committed for some time to push for the separation of Quebec from Canada. An inde-

pendant Quebec is their goal. Many of the people who voted for them did not vote
for separation. The latest poll shows only 11^ of the population in favor of it.
The party has promised a referendum in two years to decide this issue.
This is a concern now for everyone in Quebec, as well as everyone else

throu^out Canada. It will affect everyone's lives here and will be a big disrup
tion for many. People who are against separation are trying to stay calm, but some
are so afraid of what lies ahead that they have been putting their savings in banks
in Ontario and even in Vermont and New York.

If separation does come, many people

will probably move out of Quebec, both the French and the English. Some economists
are predicting a recession in Canada ajid a lower standard of living for Quebecers
if this happens.
We do not know how we will be affected by all of this.

able to stay here, no matter what developes.

Quebec.

We hope to be

Our concern is for-the people of

No matter what happens, the Church must be here.

We hope and pray that

the Church will be strong and will continue to grow. It is difficult to say what
the next few years will be like for sure, but we hope that people will become open

to the truth of Jesus Christ.

A lot of opportunities could open up for reaching

people we cannot reach at present.

Presently, Trench is the official langmge of Quebec.

Whether Quebec

separates or not, the French language will be stressed more and more.

Therefore,

it is becoming more important and more urgent for us to learn the language.

We are

studying French with the Dilleys a couple of days a week and Steve will probably
try to get into some adult French language classes soon. If we axe forced to use
French more, we will learn it faster.

As it is now, we live among a pocket of " .

English-speaking people where French people are the minority.

Our efforts are

geared to the English but when we can communicate intelligently in French we ho^
to preach the Good News to them as well.

A few of the young people from the Bible Club have been attending wor
ship services with us lately. We thank God for the opportunity to teach these young
people more often. We made a positive contact recently too. A school teacher liv
ing in our apartment building has shown a lot of interest. She is planning to
attend worship services with us soon.

We hope she will lead us to others who are

interested in the truth.

Personally, we are getting along O.K.

We have been learning much about

how Canada's federal government works as well as the provincial government. It is

really fascinating. \le have also learned that the schools in Canada teach some

U.S. historj"" and government, whereas during our own American education Canada was
seldom mentioned if at all.

Lately then, we've been learning a great deal about

Canada in general.

We celetrated the United States' Thanksgiving even though it was just

another work day for most everyone else here^

The Dilley's came to our apartment

and we ate a lot of good food. Rhonda roasted her first turkey and did a great

job. (Too bad Thanksgiving comes only .twice a year - ha ha.)

B-day is only a few weeks away. We are getting pretty excited. The
way our excitement is building, having the baby will be harder on Steve than on
Rhonda.

The baby's room is ready - and we are too!?

We've done a little Christmas shopping too.

A lot of things are pretty

expensive. Candy, especially chocolate, is very expensive. Toys are too. Batteries
for toys and radios, etc., range in price from 920 to about $325 pei" pair. Stuffed
animals, in general, seem to be less expensive. Some clothing is reasonable in price,

other clothing is expensive. We do not even look at shoes anymore. Our turkey for

.Thanksgiving cost. $1.09 per pound as compared to 59^ ~ ^50 per poiond in Vermont. The
sales tax here is 8%, Fortunately, food, books, and some children's clothing are

not taxable!
been Jfo

The rate of exchange between United States and Canadian dollars has

e were losing $11 - $12 from each of our salaxy checks.

Now, however,

both currencies sire almost at parity.

Even though most everything is fairly expensive, we are getting along

O.K. In January, we will include our financial report for these four months of
1976, We want to thank those who have sent monetary gifts allowing us to buy for
the baby and for our Christmas.

Please continue to pray for us. Pray that more people will be receptive.
Thank God for our new contact, that she is interested. Pray that she will accept the

Lord as her personal Savior. Continue to pray for the Bible Club young people and
their parents and also for our influence on them. Ask God to help those who have
pulled away from the fellowship, that they may think clearly regaxding their situa
tion. Please continue to pray for Rhonda and our child.

The baby is due around

December 15. Remember Quebecers and all Canadians in your prayers. Pray that the
Church will grow rapidly in number and maturity.

Since our December newsletter will not get to you before Christmas, we

want to wish you a very merry Christmas now. Our prayer is that as we remember how
Jesus Christ humbled Himself to be bom as one of us, each of us will have instilled

within us the importance of being a Christian and showing God our gratitude.

The grace of the Lord Jesus be with you. (Cur) love be with you all in

Jeremy Hob^^.Jlunham was born December 24 at 11^42 a-m* at the Lakeshore

He's doing fine and so are Mom and Dad- He brought him home from the hospital the

mas E-/e we waited to celebrate Christmas cn_the 29th ~ our thSsr^weddlng anniversaryMy, how time flies- The last part of this mon+li has been pretty hectic, but exciting.
Toward, the end of November Dennis placed an ad in the Montreal Star con

cerning the Churchs The ad appeared in the religion section of the Saturday edition,
on three occasicro, every other week. It was centered around being "Christians only."
It was a twoinch, one column ad and cost ^21 each time it appeared. Tliis is pretty

expensive but we cAd have some results. After the first Saturday we received several
calls from people who thought the ad was a taped message, lliey weren't interested
when they found it wasn't. The next two times the ad appeared we received some more
Interested callers. Several people were excited to find a group of people that be
lieves as we do- However, they refused to say much concerning themselves except that
they were used to going to tl\e denominational church ""hey ir^ere attending and didn't
want to change new. This is the attitude we run into more times than not. A few
