1. Root gap: separation between the

edges to be welded at the root of the
joint.
2. Root face: surface of the joint
preparation perpendicular to the
surface of the plate.
3. Bevel surface: oblique surface of the
j i t preparation
joint
ti
4. Bevel angle: angle between the
beveled surface and a plane
perpendicular to the plate.
5. Included angle: total angle between
the two bevel surfaces.
6. Seam width: effective width of the joint
(distance between the bevels plus
depth of penetration).
7. Thickness of the plate.

1. Throat thickness: distance between

seam root and surface measured on
the bisector of the angle
2. Leg length: distance between seam
root and edge
3. Joint root: point in which the bottom
of the seam intersects the surface of
the base metal
4. Joint edge: junction point between
seam surface and base metal
surface
5. Joint surface: external surface of the
seam
6. Fusion depth: depth reached by the
fusion bath from the surface of the
base metal
7. Seam width: distance between the
joint edges

The purposes of a weld preparation is to allow

access for the welding process, penetration
and fusion through the area of the joint and its
faces.
The more you take out, then the more you
must put back in.

It is a horizontal weld
position.

A little more difficult

,because
the

metal tends to sag.

Presentation By: ADNAN ASHRAF. Senior Project Engineer

It is a flat position with

plate.

Use this position, if at

allll possible.

G represents groove
and F refers fillet
welds.

Presentation By: ADNAN ASHRAF. Senior Project Engineer

It is a vertical position.

Welding is usually
done in uphill position.

Use weave bead

technique.

10

Use split bead

technique.

12

It is a overhead weld
position.

It is the most difficult

position

Presentation By: ADNAN ASHRAF. Senior Project Engineer

Pipe axis vertical.

Pipe is considered in a fixed

position.

Always use a split bead

technique

Presentation By: ADNAN ASHRAF. Senior Project Engineer

13

15

Pipe axis is fixed in

position at a 45 degree
inclination.

The position includes

flat, horizontal,
vertical, and overhead
welds.

A split bead technique

is best used.

Presentation By: ADNAN ASHRAF. Senior Project Engineer

Horizontal pipe axis.

Pipe rotation is allowed during welding to

make it flat position.

Either a split bead or weave technique

may be used.

Presentation By: ADNAN ASHRAF. Senior Project Engineer

Axis of the pipe is horizontal.

No pipe rotation allowed.

A weave bead is best used.
