Dr.

Hayes Wicker, Senior Pastor

Discovering the Divine Design

Even at an early age, I knew that my dad was a smart man.

He was a successful store owner, bookkeeper, salesman,
company representative, truck driver, and Navy draftsman.
Though never privileged to have a college education and
growing up basically as a hillbilly in the south, he had natural
engineering skills. Ill never forget the day when he showed
me a huge blueprint, which he had designed, for the building
of tanker ships during World War II. Based in Norfolk and
Mobile, he served throughout the war as the draftsman of
these important ships which supplied fuel for our forces. He
would then sail out on shakedown cruises as they tested
the seaworthiness of the vessel.
God is infinitely wise as the Divine Designer, not only of the world but of
individuals. God has made you in a certain way. Only He knows His original
plan as He gives us a future and a hope (Jeremiah 31:17). He Who has loved
us with an everlasting love and continues His faithfulness to us, also says, I
will build you (Jeremiah 31:3, 4). As you form a working relationship with the
Designer Himself, you see His blueprint unroll like an ancient scroll day-by-day
to reach your highest potential as His child and in Christs image.
Samuel was a man who discovered the Designers plan for his life. As we have
seen recently, his name comes from the Hebrew word shmuel, the root word
is Shama, which means to hear and to obey. El means God-like or mighty
man. Hannah named her son this because she had asked for a child and God
answered her request with a mighty work. His name also characterized his
ministry as he modeled how to hear from God at every age and stage and then
obey. He would operate as a priest, judge/head of the nation, prophet/seer,
and pastor. Even in his old age, he founded and presided over a great school
of prophets which influenced Nathan, Gad, David, and their successors. He
functioned as an evangelist in the Mizpah Revival, which impacted the entire
nation. Like him, we can discover that we are Gods workmanship, created in
Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do
(Ephesians 2:10).
My new sermon series explores the life of a remarkable man. C.S. Lewis, in
The Weight of Glory, wrote, There are no ordinary people. You have never
talked to a mere mortal. All of us live forever in Heaven or Hell, but not all live
lives worth living which please God and find eternal reward. My father always
looked back on his time in ship-building as a special opportunity to serve his
country and to fulfill his talents. In retirement, he worked as a carpenter, building
mission churches in the west until heart attacks ended that service. Allow Jesus,
the Great Carpenter, to continue His design as He saws away sins, nails truth,
sands the rough edges of personality, and molds character.
