1. INTRODUCTION
RuPayisanIndiandomesticcardschemeconceivedandlaunchedbytheNationalPayments
CorporationofIndia(NPCI).ItwascreatedtofulfilltheReserveBankofIndias desire to have a
domestic,openloop,andmultilateralsystemofpaymentsinIndia.RuPayfacilitateselectronic
paymentatallIndianbanksandfinancialinstitutions,andcompeteswithMasterCardandVisain
India.NPCImaintainstieswithDiscoverFinancialtoenablethecardschemetogain
internationalacceptance.
Customersatisfactionreferstohowsatisfiedcustomersarewiththeproductsorservicesthey
receivefromaparticularagency.ThecomparelevelofcustomersatisfactiontowardHDFCand
SBIbanksisdeterminednotonlybythequalityandtypeofcustomerexperiencebutalsobythe
customers expectations.
TheoriginoftheStateBankofIndiagoesbacktothefirstdecadeofthenineteenthcenturywith
theestablishmentoftheBankofCalcuttainCalcuttaon2June1806.Threeyearslaterthebank
receiveditscharterandwasredesignedastheBankofBengal(2January1809).Aunique
institution,itwasthefirstjointstockbankofBritishIndiaSponsoredbytheGovernmentof
Bengal.TheBankofBombay(15April1840)andtheBankofMadras(1July1843)followed
theBankofBengal.ThesethreebanksremainedattheapexofmodernbankinginIndiatilltheir
amalgamationastheImperialBankofIndiaon27January1921.
HDFCBankbeganoperationsin1995withasimplemission:tobea"WorldclassIndianbank".
Theyrealizedthatonlyasinglemindedfocusonproductqualityandserviceexcellencewould
helpthemtogetthere.
HDFCBank,oneamongstthefirstsofthenewgeneration,techsavvycommercialbankofindia
wassetupinaugust1995aftertheReserveBankofIndiaallowedsettingupofBanksinthe
privatesector.TheBankwaspromotedbytheHousingDevelopmentFinanceCorporation
Limited,apremierhousingfinancecompany(setupin1977)ofIndia.NetProfitfortheyear
endedMarch31,2006wasup30.8%toRs870.8crores.

thecustomer,serviceprovision,servicequalityand,forthepublic
sector, the extent to which consumer sovereignty exists. Resources may be better directed
towardssettingandmaintaininghighlevelsofstandardofservice.Thisstudyaddressesthe
difficultiesandhighlightsthecomplexnatureofacustomerorservicebeneficiarywhocanbe,at
thesametime,ataxpayer,voter,recipientoffinancialbenefits,withexpectationsofthepublic
sectoranditsdeliveryagent,yetcannotchooseanotherprovider.

formanybankstosurviveincompetition.Thepurposeofthispaperistoidentifythefactors
affecting customer satisfaction in Banks and analyze their effectson the level of customer
satisfactionforattractthecustomers.ThedimensionsReliability,ResponsivenessandAssurance
are found to be the most vital and strategic determinants of service quality and customer
satisfactionforbothpublicandprivatesectorbanks.Ifbankswanttosustaincustomersonalong
termbasis,bankersshouldworktowards100%customersatisfactionthatautomaticallyfoster
customerdelight.

Moneycontrol.com.WehavecrossedinitialtwolevelsofgrowthforRuPay.In
September,wewilladdinternetacceptabilitytoourexistingRuPaydebitcard.Wehave
alreadyclosedadealwithaUSbasedITsolutionprovider.LaterinMarch2013,we
willissueRuPayenabledinternationaldebitcards.Finally,wewilllaunchRuPaycredit
cardsinMarch,2015,saidHota.NPCI,promotedby10banksundertheaegisofIndian
BanksAssociation(IBA)hadintroducedRuPayenabledATMcardsinJune,2011.Two
lakhATMcardsarealreadyinthemarket.OnMarch26,2012itlauncheddebitcards,
whichcanbeusedinATMsanddifferentpointofsales(PoS).Sofar,fourbanks
includingUnionBankofIndia,BankofIndia,StateBankofIndiaandAxisBankhave
joinedthenetworkofRuPaydebitcards.Thismeans,acustomerofanyofthosebanks
canusesuchdebitcards.NPCI,accordingtoHota,isintalkswithICICIBankand
HDFCBank,thelenderswithmajorityofPoSterminals.Togetherthesetwoentities
ownmorethanhalfofIndia's6lakhtotalPoSterminals.Atpresent,RuPayisaccepted
in2.10lakhPoSterminalsenabledbyAxisBankandSBI.Suchterminalsarekeptin
differentmerchantoutletswhereinyoucanswipeyourdebitorcreditcard.BothICICI
BankandHDFCBankareintheprocessofrebuildingthesystem.Theyhaveindicated
joiningthenetworkinJuly.So,RuPaycard'sacceptanceinall6lakhterminalsisatime
takingaffair,Hotasaid.So,whatlurebanksto
