GIVING AND ASKING INSTRUCTION
DEFINITION
Ada tiga definisi "umum" mengenai procedure text :
1. Texts that explain how something works or how to use instruction /
operation manuals e.g. how to use the video, the computer, the tape
recorder, the photocopier, the fax.
2. Texts that instruct how to do a particular activity e.g. recipes, rules for
games, science experiments, road safety rules.
3. Texts that deal with human behavior Example : how to live happily,

JENIS INSTRUKSI
1. Use the imperative form
We use the imperative form to give orders, warnings and advice:
Be quiet!
Take care!
Listen to me carefully!
2. Use a modal verb to turn the order into a request
Could: Could you make me some tea?
Can: Can you come here please?
Will: Will you shut the door please?
Would: Would you wait here until the doctor is ready for you?
3. Use an introductory phrase to soften the order
Was hoping you could (+ infinitive without to)
I was hoping you could spare me a few minutes this morning.
Do you think you could (+ infinitive without to)
Do you think you could do this photocopying for me?
If you have a couple of minutes spare, the office needs tidying up.

CONTOH PROCEDURE TEXT - HOW TO RIDE A BICYCLE
Sitting on the bike, make sure you know where the brakes are and how
to operate them.
You have to learn to balance the bike. Find a person who can hold your
bike behind you and try to steady it as you pedal. Also find a place to
ride that is grassy or such.
After practicing for a couple minutes, the person can release his or her
hands while you try to keep your balance.
When you are ready, ride alone. But first lower the seat until you can sit
on it and put both feet flat on the ground.
When you are confident you can put your feet on the pedals and coast
for a few feet, try not putting your feet down to train your sense of
balance. Do this for 30-45 minutes or so, until you have a good feel and
some confidence about steering the bike.
As you gain experience, raise the seat up so that only your toes can
touch the ground while you are seated. This is the more appropriate
height for your seat.
Finally, you have to practice.
Once you can balance, pedal, start, and stop, you're a bicycle rider.
Congratulations!

Bees
Bee
Bees are useful insects. There are about 20.000 kinds of
bees, but only honeybees make honey.
Honeybees live in groups called colonies. Each colony has one
female queen bee, tens of thousands of worker bees, and a few hundred
males, or drones. Honeybees live in hives. Inside their hive, the bees make
honeycomb of wax. The honeycomb is a kind of bee apartment building, full
of six-sided rooms in which the bees raise young and store food.
TEXT 2
NATURAL DISASTER
Tornadoes
Tornadoes victims
With a tornado, bigger does not necessarily mean
stronger. Large tornadoes can be weak. And some of
the smallest tornadoes can be the most damaging. But
no matter what the size, tornado winds are the strongest
on Earth. Tornadoes can carry trees, cars and homes
from one place to another. They can also destroy
anything in their path.
Tornadoes have been observed on every continent
except Antarctica. But experts say they are most
commonly seen in the United States. On average, more
than 1,000 are reported nationwide each year.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration
keeps records of tornado sightings. It says tornadoes kill
The deadliest American tornado on record was the TriState Tornado of March 18, 1925. It tore across
Missouri, Illinois and Indiana, killing 695 people.
Technology was less-developed a century ago. Weather
experts were not able to give warnings about possible
tornadoes, like they sometimes do today.
Between March and May of 2011, there were 1,159
confirmed tornadoes across the United States.
Scientists say that is the most on record for any threemonth period. The most-active month was April 2011,
when 758 tornadoes were confirmed. That is the most
ever for any month.
That April, the country broke a 37-year-old record for the
largest tornado outbreak. A tornado outbreak is
commonly defined as six or more tornadoes produced
by the same weather system within a day.
Scientists say the 199 tornadoes on April 27, 2011, were
the most for any single day. They say the storms killed
316 people -- the most ever in modern records for a 24hour period.
No two tornadoes look exactly the same. And no two
tornadoes act the same way.

Plants
All living things on the earth belong to the plant, human, and animal
family. The plant family gets their food and water from the soil. They also need
sunlight to grow. Some of them live in the water and get their food from water.
There are many thousands of plants.
We can divide plants into two groups. There are the plants without stems,
roots or leaves. There are the algae and the mosses. Both kinds of plants
need a lot of water. So algae usually found in water and moss is found in wet
places.
The other group is the plants with stems. They consist of all fruit trees,
flower plants, vegetables and all the timber trees. These plants have roots,
stems, and leaves.
The plants with stems can be divided into the flowering plants and the non
flowering plants. The flowering plants have a fruit with a seed inside the flower.
Some seeds are flat like wings and are carried by the wind. Some seeds have
fleshy fruits which animal eat and pass out. Some seeds are collected and
distributed by man. In this way, plants grow once again from seeds.
The non flowering plants have spores growing on the leaves. When they
are dry, they are carried by the wind. Those spores that fall on wet soil start to
grow again. These are some of the ways that plants live and multiply.

Rain Forests
Most of tropical countries in this world have forests. People call them as the
tropical rainforest. These forests contain extremely diverse species and highly
productive community.
A few areas in the world contain the most natural and variety rainforests.
Those that have survived include forests in the Amazon basin of South America,
the Congo River Basin of Central Africa, and the larger Southeast Asian islands.
These areas are rainforests all year around. Indonesia may be the country with
the largest rainforest area. However, the amount of rainforests in the world
reduces year by year.
The rainforests are homes to many plants and animal. Many species live high
up in the trees while the other live in the soil, under the surface of forest floors.
On the floor of the forest, most plants cannot survive, so there are tends to be
very open for movement.
The rainforest is usually hot, humid, dark, and dump. Half of the plant species
grow in rainforests. Some trees can get up to 100 feet tall. They create a canopy.
It blocks sunlight coming through. Under canopy is an undiscovered world of life.
