PETROLEUM ENGINEERING SUMMER COURSE 2015

Basic PE CalculaNons, Excel

Petroleum
Engineering
Design
Part A

During 4 days students will be guided through simple

calculaNon examples in the eld of drilling, producNon and
reservoir engineering.
They will develop an understanding for the oileld unit
system and will use Excel for calculaNons and graphical
presentaNon of results.
Gained knowledge will be evaluated by solving two simple
examples using Excel in the following week; date to be
dened.

Drilling Engineering

Petroleum
Engineering
Design
Part A

During 5 days this comprehensive course will discuss basic

drilling engineering design principles for simple verNcal wells.
Among the topics are trajectory design, casing sekng depth
esNmaNon, BHA design, basic casing design and simple
hydraulics design.
Lectures are given in the morning sessions while the
alernoons are used to work on pracNcal design calculaNons.
The course will be graded by a wrimen open/closed book
exam in the following week; date to be dened.

PETROLEUM ENGINEERING SUMMER COURSE 2015

Integrated PE Project

Petroleum
Engineering
Design
Part A

During 4 days it will be demonstrated how geoscience, simple

reservoir understanding, well planning and understanding of
simple producNon and logisNc strategies would form the basis
for economical decisions in shale gas eld development.
Lowest environmental impact is assumed.
Lectures are given in the morning sessions while the
alernoons are used to work on pracNcal eld problems.
The course will be graded based on an evaluaNon of a wrimen
technical report; to be delivered by mid of September.

ProducNon Engineering

Petroleum
Engineering
Design
Part B

During this 5 days course essenNal parts in the producNon of

oil and gas at the level of a bachelor degree are discussed.
TheoreNcal inputs are combined with hand calculaNons and
solware training.
Topics are wellhead and Christmas tree design, tubing design,
compleNon tool overview, uid properNes approximaNon, IPR
calculaNons, skin eect, verNcal lil performance, restricNons,
nodal analysis and well deliverability.
The course will be graded by a wrimen closed book exam in
the following week; date to be dened.

PETROLEUM ENGINEERING SUMMER COURSE 2015

Reservoir Engineering

Petroleum
Engineering
Design
Part B

During 5 days of course-work dierent theoreNcal aspects of

reservoir engineering will be reviewed in the mornings,
followed by a pracNcal part in the alernoons.
Students will a receive basic understanding of reservoir
engineering on Bachelor level.
Following topics will be discussed: Reservoir rock and uid
properNes, recovery drive mechanisms, reserve esNmaNon,
Material Balance Analysis (MBA), Decline Curve Analysis
(DCA), ow in porous media, well tesNng, reservoir modeling
and simulaNon, displacement eciency, EOR methods
The course will be graded by a wrimen open/closed book
exam in the following week; date to be dened.

Mineralogy

Mineralogy

IntroducNon to the origin of Earth and its development unNl today.

What role do minerals play in the Earths mantle and surface. Why are we
interested in mineralogy?
Specic mineral properNes, that all derive from the crystal lakce (dened
by a) type of chemical components, b)type of bonding, and c) symmetry).
Macroscopic idenNcaNon of mineral properNes.
Mineral systemaNcs (selected mineral groups of interest to PE students)
oxides, silicates, suldes, carbonates, halides, sulfates. A few selected
examples of each group are presented with parNcular focus on
appearance, properNes, occurrence and industrial applicaNon.
IntroducNon to sedimentary rocks clasNc rocks and carbonate rocks.
ParNcular focus is given to the origin of these rocks, their classicaNon,
their occurrence and importance for the PE industry.

PETROLEUM ENGINEERING SUMMER COURSE 2015

Petrophysics

Pertophysics

First, an introducNon to the physical properNes of rocks and

minerals will be given: density, natural radioacNvity, elasNc-,
un-elasNc and thermal properNes, electrical and di-electrical
behavior, porosity, permeability, specic internal surface.
The central topic of this course will be the correlaNon
between petro-physical properNes and petroleum reservoir
parameters. The discussion will focus on the detailed
descripNon of pore space and its properNes (porosity,
permeability, capillary pressure) and on its uid contents (oil,
gas brine saturaNon).
PracNcal experience will be gained in special lab experiments.
The course will be graded by a wrimen closed book exam;
date to be dened.

Petroleum Geology

Petrolem
Geology

IntroducNon into General Geology

Earth Structure, Plate Tectonics, Sedimentary Basins, DeformaNon,
Metamorphism, MagmaNsm, Sedimentology

Lab to General Geology

DocumentaNon and interpretaNon of tectonic data (geological
compass, strike and dip, Schmidt net, construcNon of cross-secNons,
interpretaNon of geological maps and cross-secNons).

1-day Geological Field Trip

The course will be graded by wrimen exams for the lecture
and the lab; date to be dened.
