From the Desk of KVR

Dear Colleagues,
Time moves very fast and it seems as though I penned my
previous note just a month back. Despite the not-so-good
news on Indian and international economic situations, our
ICs have raced against the challenges to win considerable
quantum of orders during the first quarter of 2012-13.
Our Chairmans conviction of staying focussed enhances
performance and multiplies shareholder value stands
vindicated. Focus gets sharpened as the challenges increase
and it is quite true to our current business scenario. A
busy man has time for everything and let me wish all our
fellow L&T-ites to be focussed and busy in a constructive
way both in personal and professional life.
During my recent site visits, I had the pleasure of meeting
a lot of L&T-ites especially the new entrants to L&T family.
With construction being the core, as the Companys volume
increases, the staff strength would also increase. Induction
of close to 3000 GETs and DETs per year doesnt suffice
our ever-increasing demand. While such a large-scale
recruitment visiting nearly 250 institutions is a massive
challenge in itself, we should be conscious of this
phenomenon and strive for increasing our staff productivity
at various levels to be sure that such large-scale recruitment
is inescapable to meet our needs.
Whenever I address a group of HR personnel, I insist
upon having some robust measures to quickly mould the
new entrants to L&Ts way of working, culture and value
systems. But I realise that this is not just the job of HR
alone. It is everyones duty. Whosoever has, say, more than
4-5 years of experience within L&T should be the brand
ambassador for its values, culture and way of life. We must
be open, friendly and courteous. This should make the
newcomers to shed their inhibition and jell well in the
team.

Most of our senior management team members have risen

through ranks and all of us had the fortune of someone
handholding us during those fragile formative periods. First
impression is the best impression and when a person joins
the L&T family his experience should be such that he
should feel that he has reached his dream job. This is very
much within our hands. We may have time constraints due
to work exigencies but we should realise this is one of our
very important responsibilities. It is not out of place to
quote our founding father Mr. Henning Holck-Larsen,
Machinery must be there, buildings must be there, but
without the people its all nothing. People are our only real
asset. L&T cherishes this value very much even today.
On the other hand, the newcomer must be proud of being
an L&T-ite. L&T stands for professionalism, meritocracy
and rich values. L&T gives immense opportunities for its
employees to learn and explore new things. Innovation
and creativity are interwoven into its culture. Here
benchmarks are set only to be broken. Complacency is a
word unknown in L&Ts dictionary. My suggestion to new
entrants would be to plan long-term and stay put. You are
sure to reap benefits.
Wishing you all best of everything in life!

EIP Visitor Information Portal Launched

Visitor Information Portal was inaugurated with a pre-launch demo to Mr. B.
Ramakrishnan and Mr. A. Mohandas on April 18, 2012 by Mr. B. Srinivasan (Head
Information Systems), Mr. R. Giridharan (DGM Systems), and team. The new portal
is an upgradation of the existing Visitor Management System for managing visitors at
HQ campus. A visitor at HQ can now register through the touchscreen-based visitor
self-registration terminal which is enabled at the reception area. The whole process is
simplified and the visitor only needs to key in his identity details and the person whom
he is scheduled to meet by providing the mobile number or part of the name or email
id etc. Once the registration is completed, he is given a visitor pass which has got a
built-in RFID tag.
On a trial basis two visitors kiosks with touchscreen and RFID reader are enabled at
the receptions of CRR centre and TC 2 building. Details of visitors entering these
buildings are recognised, recorded and immediately flashed in the security terminal and
on the Visitor Terminal in the respective buildings.
The RFID-based Visitor Information Portal keeps track of the visitor right from entry
to exit through all the buildings they enter. A complete visitor analysis like how many visitors have come, how many
have exited, how many have entered a particular building can be done at the security terminal. The RFID tags are
re-usable and so eco-friendly and have no recurring cost. The passes have to be returned at the security terminal while
exiting.

Coal Handling Plant at Anpara Stage-D

Mr. Brajesh Kumar Singh (BKS), Project Manager, takes

us through a career which has been nurtured and blossomed
at L&T Construction. Joining as a GET in 1994 at Oberoi
Hotel, Chennai. BKS has had an eventful innings of close to
18 years across significant projects. He states, I was fortunate
to be associated with a cross section of projects across different
sectors and this enabled my career evolution.

330 MW HEP Srinagar

Speaking on this assignment he says the coal handling package

for 2x500 MW Anpara Thermal Power Plant is valued at
Rs. 372 crore. The scope included detailed design, engineering,
manufacture, shop fabrication, assembly testing and inspection
at manufacturers work, packing, dispatch, transportation,
transit insurance, delivery to site, unloading, handling and
storage at site, complete services of construction, erection
supervision, testing, commissioning and handing over the plant
to UPRVUNL after successful trial operation and conducting
Performance and Guarantee tests including all the associated
electrical, civil, structural and architectural work. BKS
highlights, the onus of executing Indias first thermal power
plant on an abandoned ash disposal area was a great challenge.
The entire construction area was filled with 13 m depth of fly
ash and we needed to quickly innovate on the ground
improvement methods to make headway.
The team comprised of 37 engineers and a workforce of 1300
during peak operations. BKS highlights my grading and
levelling was a critical task as the ground level varied from
+6 m to 12 m depth. Construction of the structures was
another complex task. The variance was around 21 m below
ground level and 69 m above ground level.

Hindalco Mahan

cutting and filling in 12 months and 9900 RM of stone

coloums in 6 months.
Speaking on some of major achievements at site, BKS says
the ground improvement work was a new domain for us and
we needed to quickly implement based on vibro replacement
technique using dry method. RCC piling was another activity
which needed close review as it was for the first time we were
doing piling in fly ash. In addition to this were issues such as
shortage of experienced supervisors and workmen. Through a
dedicated approach which involved methods such as Work
Breakdown Structure, implementing PDCA cycle and
application of innovative work methods we were able to achieve
the targets.

The major milestones achieved at site include 25 lakh cu.m of

BKSs family includes his wife Poonam who is a postgraduate

and two children. Son Nimish is in class XI and daughter
Kritika is in Class V.

A poised and cool demeanour enables you to make the right

choice at work, says Mr. R. Ravichandran (RRN), Project
Account Manager. Everything in life is a pleasant challenge.
The most important thing I have learnt experientially is that
building a culture of team work is the essence of successful
project management. In a career spanning across two decades
RRN has handled diverse projects in different sectors and has
the know-how and the knack of being an effective and efficient
accounts and administration professional.

He prides in calling himself a Rider in the Storm and says

crisis never lasts for ever and it is how one handles the
situation that determines the outcome. At CHP Anpara Stage
D, RRN had the onus of executing a fast track project in a
span of 31 months. Accounts and administration is a
six-member team which comprises mostly of new recruits.
RRN asserts, I have put in the best efforts to train the
youngsters and now they are handling independent portfolios
and performing well.
Speaking on the initiatives implemented at site, RRN says
labour accommodation for 500 workmen has been provided
with good hygienic condition and infrastructure facilities. This
has helped to overcome union issues and achieve productivity
targets. We have adhered to the policy of maintaining one
reinforcement steel yard which has minimised scrap disposal.
Major material requirements such as sand and metal were
procured in bulk anticipating the steep increase in prices and
the initiative has saved more than Rs. 20 lakhs.
RRN is married to Indira Gandhi who is a graduate and a
homemaker. The couple has a son and a daughter. Daughter
Niranjani is pursuing her first year graduation in Law and son
Kesava is in Class VI. A native of Pudukottai, RRN has a
fondness for listening to old Tamil melodies.

Mr. Abhay Kumar Singh (AKS), Assistant Manager

Industrial Relations, foresees the vital workmen-management
interface at project site. Having been in this field for the last
14 years, AKS has garnered the expertise and experience to
handle the IR challenges. However he is quick to point out
that every project is a new beginning and the onus is on us
to quickly understand the mindset of the people, establish
familiarity with the local administration and implement systems
without any compromise.
Equipped with a Masters degree in Social Work with
specialisation in Labour Welfare & Personnel Management and
a Bachelor of Law degree from Lucknow University, AKS is
a blend of composite IR acumen. Prior to his L&T
Construction career, AKS had handled significant projects
which included NALCO at Angul and Damanjodi, road
projects in Jammu and Kashmir, and Rosa Power Project in
UP. AKS joined L&T Construction at CHP Anpara D in
November 2010. He states this assignment is a challenging
one as it involves handling a volatile environment. As an
In-charge of Industrial Relations, I am responsible for
maintaining conducive work environment at site and ensuring
compliance of labour laws. I am also responsible for efficient
operation of payroll and administration functions.

versatile. It cannot be defined. An eye for the detail, good

communication skills and a people-friendly attitude certainly
help in handling myriad issues at diverse locations. Speaking
on his work objectives he says the thrust is on ensuring
discipline, availability of workforce and adhering to fair and
impartial review of unorganised workforce.

AKS states that he was fortunate to handle major and volatile

projects throughout his career which was instrumental in
shaping his skills. He adds the scope of an IR person is

AKSs family comprises of his wife Manisha who is a graduate

and a homemaker. The couple has a son Yashvardhan who is
in Class VI.

He states My scope includes overall responsibility of store

execution which comprises purchase and procurement of bulk
materials, tools and tackles, control of proper stacking and
storing of all types of materials, systems implementation etc.
The major items included 20263 T of cement, 5215 T of
reinforcement, 5679 T of structural steel, 37463 cum of coarse
aggregates and 32466 cum of sand. Speaking on the modus
operandi, RMS says MRN and MIB are updated on a daily
basis. Materials are unloaded at exact locations to avoid
recurring cost of shifting. Till date close to 625 T of formwork
materials have been systematically despatched to other sites.
Periodical verifications are carried out to ensure that materials
are in good condition.
Its a 24/7 service that defines the stores activity at CHP
Anpara D, says Mr. Rathindra Mohan Sinha Roy (RMS),
Assistant Accounts Manager, who is in-charge of the material
management at site. Mr. Roy has his hands full in managing
the inventory, allocating materials and facilitating the overall
projects requirement. An adept professional with nearly two

Satyabrata Mohapatra (SM), EHS In-Charge, has an

interesting flipside to his career. Graduating as an architect,
SM made a conscious shift to EHS. He says the last ten
years experience as an EHS professional has been a challenging
and invaluable learning. I was fortunate to have a considerable
overseas stint in the early part of my career. This has enabled
me to evolve as a comprehensive EHS professional.
At CHP Anpara Stage D, SMs work scope comprises
implementation of project-specific EHS plan and facilitating
of EHS compliances. The job involves coordination with site
team for implementation of IMS works, identifying the risk
factors, preparing group risk assessment for all activities, and
risk control methods implementation and monitoring. SM
states my core strength is communication and I have been
successful in creating awareness and inculcating a safety
conscious culture at site.
SM highlights the site has clocked more than 6 million safe
man-hours. This involves induction and training of more than
10,000 workmen. Under the EHS policy we have conducted
frequent health screening camps, assisted the nearby school
with timely renovations, initiated green drives etc. He makes
special mention of the fact that EHS team was instrumental
in coming up with innovative provisions such as working
platform with handrails, mid rails, toe boards for erection of
subsequent column structures at heights. Other EHS features
incorporated include height pass ID for workers, use of man

basket with fall arrester for fixing of runners, gas cutting and
welding works at the periphery of the structures.
The presence of strong winds akin to twisters and working in
a flyash environment posed the biggest challenge. The EHS
team continuously monitored the work and provided additional
review during critical tasks.
SMs wife Adyasha is a graduate and a homemaker. The couple
has a daughter, Taahira, who has just stepped into pre-KG.

For Abishek Gupta (AG), Planning In-charge (Civil), CHP

Anpara D is his maiden project in L&T Construction. In a
career spanning close to 9 years, AG has handled a diverse
spectrum of projects across different sectors. It is the advantage
of having executed composite projects that gives AG an
enduring edge in his present assignment.
AG says the planning scope is well defined and looks simple
to deal with. However the onus is in being agile at all fronts
and ensuring close coordination. Here my scope comprises
project planning, progress monitoring, reporting to external
and internal customers, invoicing, subcontractor payment etc.
The essence of a good planning manager, in addition to
performing his core duties, is the way he handles people, says
AG, and continues it is mandatory to have a fair and friendly
dealing with customers and execution staff. Often planning
personnel are looked upon as key interfaces in project
management. For me, this was an opportunity to acclimatise
with the L&T culture of working. In addition to my planning
responsibility, I was also given the charge to handle the quality
matters. The tenure was fulfilling as the site achieved a 100%
compliance audit report.
Speaking on some of the major tasks handled at site, AG says
I proposed and executed a separate construction methodology
for the track hopper which resulted in considerable savings in
terms of cost and time. Direct control on steel yard and
specialised agencies helped in minimizing scraps and losses.

April - June 2012

GETs and DETs are trained and given roles to evolve during
the project execution.
AG hails from a family of civil engineers. He is a resident of
Jammu & Kashmir. An eligible bachelor, AGs family includes
his parents, sisters and a younger brother. Computer and
architecture are his fond subjects. Presently AG is pursuing
Post Graduate Programme in Project Management course at
National Institute of Construction Management and Research
(NICMAR-Pune).

Mr. Preetham Mudya (PRM), Assistant Construction Manager

(Civil), has been in the thick of action right from the time he joined
L&T Construction at CHP Anpara Stage D. The initial task entrusted to
PRM was to improve the ground conditions. The site was immersed
with 13 m depth of fly ash whose lateral load bearing capacity was well
below the standard levels. PRM was a part of the team that worked on
the optimization of the stone coloumns and successfully overcame the
challenge.
PRM says As an adept professional with more than a decades expertise
in various streams of project management and execution, the debut in
L&T was a unique experience. For the first time I got to see such a site
condition and working along this environment was a demanding task.
The entire zone was filled with a thick layer of fly ash. The layer was so
deep that during piling we encountered a pile bore collapse during
installation. Unlike the normal piling activity, here we had issues such as
necking/bulging of pile concrete in fly ash, loss of moisture from the pile
concrete. It was a trial and test method which convinced us of the way
forward. Trials were conducted using temporary MS liner of length 13 m
up to ash filled depth in continuous and close supervision. The results
obtained were as per the high quality requirement and paved the way
forward for project execution. Having accomplished the initial task,
PRM has been given the mantle to handle the civil works.
Citing his career accomplishments, PRM says I have had varied stints in
my decade-long career. Some of the major achievements include designing
of 22 villas and 4 multistoried commercial buildings in Mangalore, design
and supervision of massive retaining wall of both RCC and masonry up to a height of 15 m and a span of 400 m, piling a
reclaimed area (deep sea filled boulders) using casing of 23 m depth and a bore hole of 30 m depth.
PRM is a native of Managalore. His family includes his wife Sunaina who is a B.E. in Electronics and a homemaker. The couple
has a son, Siddhant.
Mr. Suresh Bahadur Sinh (SBS) is a versatile mechanical
engineering professional who has handled significant MMH
projects involving planning, execution, and contracts
administration in medium to large multi-disciplinary
construction projects. At CHP Anpara stage D, SBS is
entrusted with the overall responsibility of completion of the
mechanical works which includes structural fabrication,
erection, equipment installation and commissioning for the
1650 TPH coal handling plant.
Speaking on his current assignment, SBS says this is Indias
first thermal power plant which is being constructed at an
abandoned ash disposal area. The entire construction area was

filled with 13 m depth of fly ash. The team had to negotiate

this challenge to make headway. The major quantum of
mechanical works involved 5052 T of structural fabrication
and erection, 7150 T of equipment installation.
The mechanical works commenced during January 2010 and
are proposed to be completed by December 2012. Speaking
on the progress of works, SBS says proper planning,
monitoring and operation of resources resulted in completion
of the CHP package ahead of schedule. The CHP erection
was completed up to a height of 68 m with a single 150 T
crane. The major equipment installed include 4 nos of 1240
TPH paddle feeder, 4 nos of 907.5 TPH crusher, 4 nos of
907.5 TPH VSF, 2 nos of 1650 TPH reversible stacker-cum
-reclaimer, 20 nos. of coal conveyors, 62000 IM of utility
piping.
Reminiscing on his 13-year-long career in L&T, SBS says I
commenced as an execution engineer at 40 MGD STP for
MCD at Delhi and then moved on to Alumina Refinery projects
at Renukoot as a planning engineer and later as a mechanical
in-charge. The stints were invaluable and enabled me to handle
the 1500 TPH coal handling plant for NTPC Vindhyanagar.
SBSs family includes his wife, Indu, who is a homemaker and
a postgraduate in political science, and two children. Son Saurav
is in Class II and the younger Gaurav is in Class I. Listening
to music, playing an occasional game of cricket and badminton
keep him in good stead to meet the demands of efficient
project management.

lab in the 5 floors. He says with precision planning and
optimal use of resources we were able to ensure that the
structure achieved the aesthetic look.

It is my firm conviction that attitudes determine outcomes in

life. It is this principle which has enabled me to adhere to
ethical traits such as sincerity and honesty which in turn have
given me a positive outlook in life and a high level of selfconfidence. These invaluable assets have propelled me to higher
levels in my career and life at large says Mr. S. Balaji (SB),
Construction Manager.
In a career spanning close to three decades, SB has been with
L&T for almost 18 years. Speaking on his professional pursuits,
he says My first project was Gujarat Cement at Rajula wherein
I had the scope to work in slip form structure silos, this was
followed by assignments at SPIC Manali, Ford India in

April - June 2012

Highlighting the challenges he says, space was always an

issue as we had to execute works adjacent to a running hospital
in the same campus. All activities had to be planned accordingly.
It was paramount to ensure that the structures were executed
without damaging the existing service lines. The task was
accomplished through innovative construction methods with
stringent quality and safety monitoring. As a special initiative,
I prepared and implemented SPICE programme to enhance
productivity. Special shuttering arrangements for coloumn and
beam intersection areas were done innovatively, resulting in
excellent finish.
SBs family includes his parents and wife Sujatha who is a
home maker. The couple has a daughter Amirthalakshmi who
is in Class IV and is keenly interested in dance and arts.

the material receipts to the inspection and issuing, the team
goes about the task in a meticulous manner adhering to the
standards, checks and monitoring process on a case to case
basis.
Speaking on the uniqueness of materials at this site, NS says
for the first time we have handled high profile medical
equipment which requires deft handling. The high sensitivity
of such equipment meant that we had to take additional care
during the handling process. High value materials have been
received and handed over to the client in safe and secure mode.
Another critical issue which NS highlights is the sourcing of
one crore fly ash bricks by identifying competent vendors and

ensuring timely delivery. NS adds the receipt of bricks was

monitored on a day to day basis.
A native of Vandavasi in Tamil Nadu, NSs family includes his
wife Poompavai and two children. His wife is a Diploma holder
in Civil Engineering and is employed as a technical assistant

into L&T. Speaking on his debut assignment, he says my
scope largely included facilitating the specification approvals
of the medical equipment, procurement, receipts and storage,
inspection, installation, commissioning and handing over the
medical equipment to the clients.
Unlike the usual project materials, medical equipment is
sensitive and need specialised material handling. The cost and
the fragile nature of the equipment meant that one has to have
special domain knowledge to handle the state-of-the-art
equipment. PRs expertise and experience in this arena proved
handy. PRs accomplishments include complete installation and
handing over of 80% equipment in the existing building and

99% of equipment in the RCC building. PR adds the scope

included obtaining necessary regulatory and statutory approvals
before the procurement. The task was complex and one needed
to have proper documentations prepared.
PR hails from Malappuram in Kerala. His spouse Greeshma is
a homemaker. PR has fond aspirations to further enhance his
know-how in the specialised domain of bio-medicine. An avid
reader, he keeps himself updated on the latest information in
his professional pursuits. The young couple share common
interests in reading and travelling.

Mr. S. Saravanan (SS), the livewire man at JIPMER Phase II, is an all-round
performer. As an electrical in-charge, he oversees a critical part of the project
and also dons the role of a sporting cricket captain of the project team. Joining
L&T Construction at the landmark CTS MEPZ project, SS has proved himself
a worthy professional and has assumed the mantle at JIPMER Phase II with
the same zeal and quest.
Speaking on his career milestones, SS says CTS MEPZ was an invaluable stint
and a great assignment. As a debut project, it gave me the scope and confidence
to perform and excel. JIPMER Phase II is another EPC challenge and Im
relishing this role. The scope comprises installation, testing and commissioning
of electrical works.
Speaking on the major milestones, SS says the expansion of the Regional
Cancer Centre was successfully completed within time after overcoming the
problem of earth resistance. We have implemented a new eco-safe maintenance

per CPWD Standards. Besides, 250 KVA DG Set, 16 LT Panels 4 UPS have
been commissioned for sensitive medical treatment areas like Linac room,
Brachy therapy, CT simulator and X-ray rooms. The augmentation works
posed many practical bottlenecks. SS adds the works had to be executed
without disturbing the functionality of the hospital.
SS cites that the scope also called for a harmonic analysis to be done for the
transformer LT busduct to study the vibration due to the presence of medical equipment and UPS functioning. The project
team suggested the inclusion of a new reactive capacitor panel to the existing system to negotiate the harmonic generation.
SS proudly states that the high point of this project was the inauguration of the facility by the Prime Minister of India. He
states that the external lighting for the event was done on a war footing basis.
SSs family comprises his wife Venkateswari, who is a homemaker. The couple has two children. Daughter Thanushiya is in
Class IV and son Darshan is in pre KG. SS is an avid cricket buff who likes to play the game. He has led the project team

Solar Power Plants

After having accomplished the completion of 40 MW solar

power project at Pokhran in just 129 days, Mr. Rajiv Kumar
(RK), Project Manager, now dons the role of cluster project
manager for solar power projects in Ahmedabad. On a
contended note he says It all looks great now but the process
was very challenging and the result a significant testimony of
L&Ts EPC prowess.
RK says At that juncture the 40 MW Pokhran project was the
largest job. The schedule of the scope was challenging
throughout and in addition I had to oversee the status of
4 other solar jobs across Rajasthan. The main scope was in
erecting the more than 5 lakh modules ranging from 77.5 W
to 85 W in a short span of time. In order to speed up the
works, we had identified the critical path and paid special
attention to the critical activities. Mechanized form of
foundation special ramming machines that could drive
galvanized steel stubs (26kgs-a piece) were driven 1.3 m below
the FGL. The survey was technically demanding and required
precision accuracy. Major work activities were dependent on
tasks such as clearing of landforms and surveying. Stage-wise
working was planned to ensure that fronts were taken up
simultaneously.
RK highlights that the most important and critical activity
was the civil foundation works for power rooms and the cabling
works. He adds Both these works were massive not because
of the enormous quantity but for the stringent time frames
given for completion. For the civil works we roped in skilled
workmen from B&F projects and took the services of CSTI

trained supervisors/technicians. Quality checks were regulated

through third party reviews.
RK makes special mention of the efforts put in by the HQ
team in enabling the delivery of the key materials. He says
To make up the time delay we planned for material
management distribution at locations on field in a strategized
manner. This was a crucial step from the logistics point of
view.
RKs family comprises of his wife Nirupam who is a
homemaker, and two daughters. The elder Ritika, is in Class
IX and the younger Nitika is in Class V. An enterprising
professional, RK is a keen learner and asserts, I feel happy to
enhance my knowledge and get to know on new things even
from my juniors.
we were right on target to accomplish the commissioning of
one of the largest renewable energy projects of the country.
BR highlights the team was divided into work activity
groups based on the DC and electrical works. The solar field
was segregated into three zones and we had individual incharges to oversee the DC works along with the civil activities.
We had in-charges for testing and commissioning. With a staff
strength of only 15, we went about executing the project. As
80% of job value comprised of supply materials, strategizing
the logistic planning was paramount to the execution. The
foundation stub materials were procured without exemption
as much of the work was dependent on this activity.

Rendezvous with Mr. B. Ramprakash (BR), Assistant

Construction Manager (Electrical), provided an interesting
insight into a multifaceted personality engineer, musician
and sportsman. The young man has for sure had some very
challenging stints in L&T. BR has been part of the TL team
which has done remarkable work at some of the most remote
mountain regions in India. Having established his credentials,
he was sought out as a pivotal execution personnel for the 40
MW solar power plant at Pokhran.
Speaking on this project, BR says most of us were new to the
execution of solar power projects but that did not deter us as
April - June 2012

BR makes special mention of the support from the design

team. He says to review the practical issues, the team was at
site and implemented prompt changes especially with regard
to the inventor and control rooms. It was proposed by the
design team to go in for pile design concreting of greater
depth with smaller diameter, against the usual open type
foundations. This helped us to speed up the work and achieve
the targets. He adds the work gangs were continuously
supplied with materials right on the field. The site achieved a
peak production of 14000 modules erection per day and 45
km of cable laying in a day.
BR hails from Trichy in Tamil Nadu. His family comprises his
parents and sister who reside in his hometown. The young
man has many talents up his sleeve, apart from his engineering
prowess; he plays the violin with lan and is good at
badminton.

In less than a years time Mr. K.C. Parameshaiah (KCP) has

been at the helm of four solar power projects. Commencing
with the 5 MW solar PV plant at Dhama, KCP subsequently
executed the 6 MW, 20 MW and 25 MW plants at Charanka.
KCP says this was perhaps the most demanding phase of my
career. The records are now a benchmark in the execution of
solar PV projects and Im proud to be a part of these
milestones.
In a career spanning close to 25 years, KCP has handled a
diverse spectrum of power transmission and distribution
projects. It is this know-how and expertise which has given
him the edge while executing stringent deadline projects. He
says project management is a versatile portfolio and the men
holding forte need to be adept in various domains. In my long
career with L&T, this versatility has been thrust at different
phases of my career. The present role as a cluster project
manager at Ahmedabad since April 2012 has been a challenging
and interesting stint.
Speaking on the execution, KCP says since the time span was
minimal, we had to plan with precision and monitor on various
fronts such as design, procurement, execution etc. to ensure
that work was progressing round the clock to meet the stringent
schedule. To capitalise on speed and time we have used prefab
buildings for the control and inverter rooms and speeded up
the ramming works by using state-of-the-art ramming
machines. Since the site was spread over an area of 350 acres,
managing the resources and labour was a critical issue. In
addition to this, we encountered unprecedented flooding

unseen in the last 25 years. The team had to negotiate this

natural challenge. Handling the fragile and expensive framed,
frameless thin film, crystalline PV modules and inverters in
rainy weather was a deft task. He adds at a 25 MW plant in
Charanka we had to execute 60 modules with each structure
weighing close to 5 t. Out of the 12 plots, 11 had nearly 132
structures generating around 2.25 MW each.
On the home front, KCP has a loving family. His wife Ganga
is a homemaker. The couple has two children. Elder daughter,
Vishakha, is in Class XII while son Vishal is in Class VI.

For Mr. Sachin Kumar Borisa (SKB), Assistant Construction Manager, at

25 MW Solar Photo-Voltaic Power Project, Charanka, this has been a landmark
assignment. Joining L&T in May 2011, SKB was immediately posted at site as
in-charge. He says the onus was complete and we worked as a team for
accomplishing this milestone which was inaugurated by the Prime Minster.
Speaking on the travails of this project, SKB says the most important thing is
the deadline. Unlike other projects, here it is just a couple of months and the
lead time is almost nullified. We were given a time period of six months but
unprecedented rains and local issues ensured that we were left with only three
months to complete the task. The remote locale of the project meant that we
had to initially establish a firm set-up to proceed with the works. It was a hard
task amidst a harsh environment. In addition to this was the execution hurdles.
The concrete foundations as per the design did not match the load carrying
capacity. Hence we had to supplement with appropriate reinforcement.
Fabrication was another critical task which needed continuous monitoring to
align the matching of structural elements.
Huge quantum of soil backfilling was another task which had to be carried out
immediately after the heavy rains. SKB asserts though the scope was not
contractual, the onus was on us to make headway for execution. Since the
schedule was lean, we had to implement parallel execution method with
continuous monitoring and control measures. At places where there was large
waterlogging, we have implemented augur system for the foundation work of
inverter room and control room, as against the pedestal and footing process, after the approval from the design team
SKBs family includes his wife Vinita who has done her M.Phil and is a homemaker. The couple has a daughter, Yashree. SKB
cherishes his maiden assignment in L&T and says this job was highly appreciated by GPCL for the quality of work and
housekeeping achieved during the Prime Ministers visit.

Hailing from an agricultural family, it was a sheer passion for

engineering that drove Mr. K.S. Rangachar (KSRC), Cluster
Project Manager for Solar BU at Bangalore, to take up a
professional pursuit. Reflecting back on the choice made he
say, It has been almost 28 years since I have done the
engineering facet and the journey has been most fulfilling.
Stepping into execution of the solar power projects has brought
another dimension to my career. It is a new high and the urge
to explore and excel gets further intensified.
KSRCs solar projects tryst began with the 5 MW ESP PV
power plant at Dhama, Gujarat. This was followed by the
trendsetting 10 MW Millennium PV power plant at Dhama,
Gujarat. He says This project was executed with tracking
technology using IDEEMAEC concept from Germany, which
is a first of its kind in Asia. The plant is spread across 70 acres
and comprised 1753 trackers with mono crystalline PV panels.
The scope involved civil, structural and electrical works. The
major challenge was in maintaining the tolerance level of the
tubes (above which the tracker is affixed) within 0.2 degree
limits. The major structural work involved erection of the
Ideematec tracker along with the vertical tube axis. Achieving
the perfect balance was a critical task.
KSRC states The remote locality was another bigger issue
since no contractor was ready to mobilize manpower. However,
through effective networking and negotiation we were able to
source workmen. To speed up the civil works, the team went
in for prefabricated buildings along with pile foundations.
Since this was a first of its kind project, we went about in
establishing innovative procedures and systems. For civil works

we established a lab for concrete testing. The service of a BVQ

agency was called for to monitor and guide over the quality
issues. In the structural arena, we sent two potential engineers
to Pondicheery for getting trained in the erection process and
developed the procedure for Ideematec structure erection.
KSRCs family includes his wife Saraswathi who is a
homemaker. The couple has two children. Elder son Dhananjay
is an engineer who is settled and the second son is pursuing
his engineering degree course KSRC is a socially conscious
person and does his bit through a charitable trust log which
he is a managing committee member.

Pushing over a lucrative offer in the research and development wing of a

prestigious MNC, Mr. Arvind Kumar Limje (AKL) pursued his strong
penchant for renewable energy and sustainable technology. His green quest
began in a small way and today he finds himself at the helm of Indias largest
EPC solutions provider for solar power projects. Equipped with an M.Tech in
Energy Science and Engineering from IIT Bombay and a B.Tech in Mechanical
Engineering from NIT Raipur, AKJ joined L&T Construction in February
2011.
His first major break was the 10 MW Millennium PV solar power plant at
Dhama in Gujarat. Speaking on the project, AKL says it was a first of its kind
plant in Asia using Ideematec trackers. For me this was a great exposure and
invaluable learning. A total of 1756 trackers were erected. The erection
demanded high level of precision and adherence to tolerance limits of less than
0.1 mm. Tracker cabling was another critical task as the excavation work was
close to 95 km length running parallel to the tracker row. As a planning
engineer the biggest challenge for me was to schedule the plan and incorporate
all the activities. Since this was a first of its kind technology, we came up with
many innovative systems and procedures.
AKL adds, for civil works we established a lab for concrete testing. The
service of BVQ agency was called for to monitor and guide over the quality
issues. To develop a procedure for Ideematec structure erection, we deputed
two potential engineers for getting trained in the erection process in Puducherry.
The major project activity was divided into parts and for each category there
was an overall in-charge. The method of working helped us to progress on all fronts simultaneously and complete the task
within the scheduled time period. AKL has moved on to his next solar project assignment which is a 125 MW CSP plant.
As a planning engineer, this young professional has host of responsibilities and is in the thick of action. The opportunity is
yet another new technology based on linear fresenel reflector and an invaluable learning for him.
An eligible bachelor, AKLs family includes his parents and an elder brother and an elder sister. Reading and playing badminton
are his fond hobbies.

For the 143 children of L&T Constructions employees

in Chennai, the 2012 Childrens Summer Camp was a
six-day event of fun and learning. Organised by ECC
Recreation Club, HQ Chennai, the event is an eagerly awaited
activity in the Clubs yearly agenda.
This year the children were categorised into three groups tiny
tots, budding kids and young minds, based on age. A renowned event
management firm Max Academy was called in to conduct the event.
The six-day camp was organised during May 28-June 2, 2012 at HQ
Chennai.
The theme was a blending of character, creativity, magic and fun with an appreciation
for the nature and environment we live in. At the camp, children were given opportunities
to act on their own, be self-reliant, develop leadership traits and make new friendships in a
supportive and non-competitive environment. The presence of friendly facilitators inspired the children
to set high standards.
Learning amidst fun was the way the camp was conducted. Programmes such as memory skills, perpetual calendar,
handwriting skills, brain functions, how to tap the unused portions of brain, simple pneumonic etc. were all learnt by
the children through fun and games. The objective was to create a subconscious learning which would be a lasting
experience for the kids.
At the end of the event, there were 143 confident stars who were all winners. The Club had made meticulous arrangements
for snacks and lunch. A dedicated team of volunteers took care of the childrens needs and ensured that every child had a smile
on the face. Each child was presented with a certificate and a Tupperware lunch box as a gift item from the Club.

e-SEWA Orientation Programme on Provident Fund Remittance

Participants of e-SEWA programme at HQ, Chennai, seen with Mr. A. Mohandas and faculty

e-SEWA is a newly introduced concept by the Central Government of India for the compliance of PF Act through
electronic media. It has become mandatory for all PF code holders to remit the PF contributions and filing of returns
through electronic media. L&T Construction has around 1.6 lakh PF Account holders and deposits Rs.12 crores on
account of employer and employee contribution every month, the manual maintenance of records as per the statute was
a herculean task.e-Sewa has simplified the process. In order to enrich the skills of L&T Constructions site based FA&A
staff, an orientation programme was organised at Hyderabad on April 27, 2012 for the job sites of all ICs and the
programme was well received by all the participants. Subsequently a second programme was conducted at HQ-Chennai
onMay 14, 2012 for the job sites of all ICs of Chennai and Bangalore Region. It is proposed to conduct similar
programmes for the benefit of all the site based FA&A staff at Kolkatta, Delhi and Mumbai in due course. PF
Department also has appreciated L&T Constructions efforts in implementing their portal to a larger population.
