Instructions to candidates:
1. This question paper consists of 2 printed pages.
2. Answer all questions in Section A and any one question in Section B.
3. All necessary working should be shown clearly.
4. Non-exact numerical answers may be given correct to three significant figures, or one decimal place in the
case of angles in degrees, unless a different level of accuracy is specified in the question.

(b) In a research laboratory, a drug is infused into the bloodstream of a mouse, which was
originally free of the drug, at a constant rate of r ml per min. Simultaneously, the drug is removed
at a rate proportional to the amount of the drug present at time t minutes. Suppose the amount
of drug in the bloodstream remains constant at the instant when it is 2r ml, show that the differential
equation
models the situation just described, where x is the amount of drug in the
bloodstream.
(i) Solve the differential equation, leaving x in terms of r and t.
(ii) Find the exact amount of time needed for the amount of drug to reach r ml.
