Fashion Subcultures

What is a sub culture?

In sociology, anthropology and cultural
studies, a subculture is of people with a
culture (whether distinct or hidden) which
differentiates them from the larger culture to
which they belong.

The study of subcultures often consists of

the study of symbolism attached to clothing,
music and other visible exaggerations by
members of subcultures, and also the ways
in which these same symbols are interpreted
by members of the dominant culture.
Members of a subculture often signal their
membership through a distinctive and
symbolic use of style, which includes
fashions, mannerisms, etc

Types
Music-based subcultures are particularly
vulnerable to this process, and so what may
be considered a subculture at one stage in
its historysuch as jazz, goth, punk, hip
hop, and rave cutures.
Sexual subcultures gay culture

Hence, Subculture is a word, which means

liberty of appearance, liberty of
creativeness, liberty and ease of the chosen
model for getting pleasure.
The subculture is a sacred action, in which
the only arbiter of values and belief, taste
and preferences is the person.
The person with the autonomy of his own
choice.

Sub culture and Fashion!!!

"Between subculture and fashion there
is a connection and it is very important.
The subculture - the clothes that the
young wear in the street, the ideas of
the rock bands, the clothes in the clubs,
etc. influence a lot the fashion design.
(Alexander Mc Queen)

Gothic

Gothic is derived from Italian language.

In Italian language gothic means "rough, barbarous"

Gothic language

The Gothic language is an extinct East Germanic

language, spoken by the Goths.

It is divided into three subgroups: Western Gothic,

Eastern Gothic and Crimean Gothic.

Gothic fashion

Gothic fashion is a clothing style worn by members

of the Goth subculture.

It is stereotyped as a dark, sometimes morbid,

eroticized fashion and style of dress.

Some characteristic of this fashion are dark

colored clothing:
blacks, dark reds, blues, and purples.

Many often wear clothing made from

leather, or in newer times PVC, or pieces of
fetish attire, such as corsets and bodices.

Gothic style in modern trend

Popular culture is what defines the current trends

and up to date clothing styles that are in.
Conforming to these trends is what is considered
fashionable and modern.

Clothing and fashion is important because it is a

form of nonverbal communication that helps indicate
occupation, rank, gender, sexual availability, locality,
class, wealth and group affiliation.

Grunge is a subgenre of alternative rock that

emerged during the mid-1980s in the American state
of Washington, particularly in the Seattle area.
Inspired by hardcore punk, heavy metal, and indie
rock, grunge is generally characterized by heavily
distorted electric guitars, contrasting song dynamics,
and apathetic or angst-filled lyrics.
The grunge aesthetic is stripped-down compared to
other forms of rock music, and many grunge
musicians were noted for their unkempt appearances
and rejection of theatrics.

ORIGIN OF THE TERM

The word grunge is believed to be a back formation
from the US slang adjective grungy, which originated
in about 1965 as a slang term for "dirty" or "filthy".
One of the most important events in 1990s fashion was
the rise of Grunge fashion in 1992.

Grunge fashion was influenced by grunge music.

Due to the mainstream success of Nirvana and their hit

single Smells Like Teen Spirit.

Grunge fashion consisted of both

sexes wearing flannel shirts

'90s Fashion: Bright and Baggy

Grunge fashion first walked down the runway

when Marc Jacobs was designing

Grunge Fashion generally consists of loose fitting

baggy clothing, which is usually ripped to give
the effect of old, tatty clothing.

The grunge style resulted in a decline in bright colours.

It was dominated by plaid flannel shirts, stonewashed
blue jeans, and dark colours like maroon, forest green,
indigo, and brown.

White and black were also popular.

The punk subculture includes a diverse array of ideologies, and

forms of expression, including fashion, visual art, dance,
literature, and film, which grew out of punk rock.
The punk subculture emerged in the United Kingdom, the
United States, and Australia in the mid-1970s. Exactly which
region originated punk has long been a major controversy
within the movement.
The punk subculture is centred around listening to recordings or
live concerts of a loud, aggressive genre of rock music called
punk rock, usually shortened to punk.
While most punk rock uses the distorted guitars and noisy
drumming that is derived from 1960s garage rock and 1970s
pub rock, some punk bands incorporated elements from other
subgenres, such as metal (e.g., mid-1980s-era Discharge) or
folk rock (Billy Bragg).

The punk subculture is a subculture that is based around punk rock.

It emerged from the larger rock and roll scene in the mid-to-late-1970s
in the UK ,the US of A and Australia. The punk movement has spread
around the globe and developed into a number of different forms.

Punk culture encompasses distinct styles of :

Music
Ideologies
Fashion
Visual art
Dance
Literature and film
Lifestyle and community.

Several subcultures have developed out of punk to become distinct in

their own right including:
Hardcore

Goth
Psychobilly

Music is the most important aspect of the punk subculture. Punk

music is called punk rock.
Most punk rock songs are:
Short
Have complicated arrangements and
Feature lyrics that express punk values
Punk rock is usually played in bands instead of
by solo artists.

Punks seek to outrage propriety with the highly theatrical use of:
Clothing
Hairstyles
Cosmetics
Tattoos
Jewelry
Body modification

They wear :

Tight "drainpipe" jeans

T-shirts with risqu images

Rocker jackets
Footwear such as Converse sneakers, skate shoes, brothel creepers, or
Dr. Martens boots.

Some punks:
Style their hair to stand in spikes.
Cut it into Mohawks or other dramatic shapes, often coloring it with
vibrant, unnatural hues.
Punks tend to adorn their favorite jacket or vest with pin-back
buttons and patches of bands they love and ideas they believe in, telling
the world around them a little bit about who they are.
They sometimes flaunt taboo symbols such as the Iron Cross.

The times have changed. Even kids today are getting influenced by the
punk subculture. Spiked hair, T-shirts with logos, Funky shoes, Caps
etc. are grabbing the attention of kids these days.

Minimalism describes movements in various forms of art

and design, especially visual art and music, where the work
is stripped down to its most fundamental features.
Minimalist music is an originally American genre of
experimental or Downtown music named in the 1960s
based mostly in consonant harmony, steady pulse (if not
immobile drones), stasis or gradual transformation, and
often reiteration of musical phrases or smaller units such as
figures, motifs, and cells.
Minimalism in visual art, sometimes referred to as literalist
art and ABC Art emerged in New York in the 1960s.
Literary minimalism is characterized by an economy with
words and a focus on surface description. Minimalist
authors eschew adverbs and prefer allowing context to
dictate meaning

Clean cut and unfussy, the trend

for pared down clothes has
continued and there is not a frill
or floral print in sight. Luxury
fabrics and clever cutting are used
to ensure that things aren't too
dull or boring..

Heavy metal (often referred to simply as metal) is a genre of

rock music that developed in the late 1960s and early 1970s.
Heavy metal is the most extreme in terms of volume,
machismo, and theatricality.
Heavy metal has long had a worldwide following of fans
known as "metal heads" or "head bangers".
Although early heavy metal bands such as Led Zeppelin,
Black Sabbath, and Deep Purple attracted large audiences,
they were often critically hated at the time, a status common
throughout the history of the genre.

The clothing associated with heavy metal has its roots in the biker and rocker
subcultures.

Judas Priest

The band that has received the most credit for revolutionizing the look was
Judas Priest, primarily with its singer, Rob Halford. He incorporated a biker
look to his stage persona as early as 1978.

Modern metal fashion is an amalgamation of punk, Goth, military fashion

and even various historical fashions.

Military fashion and vietnam war :Fans and bands of thrash metal, with
the members of thrash metal bands of the 1980s like Metallica, Destruction,
and Megadeth wearing bullet belts around their waists on stage.

Celtic, Viking and Chivalric culture: Bands such as Blind Guardian,

and has its impact upon the everyday fashion and especially the stagegear of
metal artists.
The independence, masculinity and honor of the warrior ethos is extremely
popular amongst metal heads, as is the rejection of modern day consumerist
and metro sexual culture.

The band shirt is a common article of

clothing in heavy metal culture.
These come in two varieties: the normal Tshirt, and the long sleeve T-shirt, which will
often feature designs down the arms as well
as on the back and front.
These shirts display on their front the name
of a band, often accompanied by the band's
logo or an album cover, and the back some
tour list, lyrics, slogan, or another image.
This is standard uniform for fans of the band
emblazoned on the shirt.

Patches are small shaped pieces of fabric that carry a design:

normally, at least in terms of metal fashion, a band logo or album
cover.
The traditional "patch jacket" is a black jacket, usually long
sleeves, though denim jackets (More common in the UK and
with traditional metal fashion) are also used, often with the
sleeves cut off.
Band names are also sometimes displayed in the form of badges,
which are displayed in much the same way as patches, although
obviously the range of locations in which they can be placed is
greater.

The most commonly worn types of jackets that metal heads wear are
black leather jackets, blue/black denim jackets, trench coats and
army combat jackets like field jackets

The most common form of leg-wear is tight, (semi-loose fitting

or even baggy black or blue denim jeans (sometimes ripped).
Leather trousers are also popular, as are camouflagepatterned combat trousers and kilts.
Some legwear is typically associated with particular styles of
metal, for example: spandex trousers
Metal heads have also been known to
wear cargo trousers and cargo shorts as
well as denim cut-offs in warmer weather.

The most popular hairstyle associated with metal is long, natural hair
which adds to the experience of head banging and reflects the non
conformist attitude of metal.
Extra long and curly hair among fans of power metal reflecting the
medieval warrior image.
Black hair dye among (typically female) fans of black metal and gothic
metal.
Dreadlocks among alternative metal fans.
Baldness, very short hair, or shaving receding hair is perfectly
acceptable, as sported by singer Rob Halford of Judas Priest, Phil
Anselmo of Pantera, Tim Owens of Iced Earth, and guitarists Scott Ian
of Anthrax and Kerry King of Slayer.
The Mullet hairstyle is associated with fans of heavy metal music,
mainly by 80s glam metal musicians and fans but it is largely
considered kitschy in recent times.

Silver neck-chains or pendants, often of a religious or
anti-religious nature: crucifixes are popular.
Headgear is rare among metalheads but some
(especially fans of traditional heavy metal or thrash
metal) sometimes wear bandanas, tuques, leather biker
caps.
Leather fingerless gloves are common accessories
among heavy metal and thrash metal fans and are
often adorned with metal studs or spikes.
Popular in the extreme metal scene are military
surplus items such as bullet belts and dog tags.

Metal heads often engage in some form of

body modification, the most popular being
tattoos, which will often employ the imagery of
metal, metal lyrics or even band logos or
mascots.
Piercings are also not uncommon, although
facial piercings, especially amongst male
metalheads, are not particularly common,
especially when compared to other groups
such as punks, Goths, or emos.
